Since I’m on the topic of golf (see post below on Tiger Woods), I have this simple question: Why hasn’t the USGA extended a special invitation to the U.S. Open to Lee Janzen? Anybody who has won TWO Opens and who is under 50 and still on the tour should darn well be invited back when the Open is being played at the site of one of this two victories. Janzen won at Olympic in 1998, the last time the Open was held at Olympic, and that’s where it will be played next week. In addition to his two US Open wins, Janzen also won a Players Championship. He also is a consummate gentleman. He is exactly the sort of player for whom a single special invitation is appropriate.

You are absolutely right. Janzen is a class act and, given his success at Olympic, deserves an invitation. But is it too late?

Actually, if I understand correctly, there are two or three spaces left in the field. The USGA should invite him!
