Mitt Romney is set to give a major speech on the national debt
in Des Moines today as part of his offensive against the Obama
administration’s big-spending fiscal policies. Some excerpts:
A prairie fire of debt is sweeping across Iowa and our nation
and every day we fail to act we feed that fire with our own lack of
resolve. This is not a Democratic or Republican problem. That
fire could care less if you have a donkey or an elephant in your
front lawn, it’s still coming for your house. There’s plenty
of blame to go around for both parties. But in my years leading
businesses, an Olympics and a state, I’ve learned one simple
principle of leadership that never falters: Leaders lead. I
will lead us out of this debt and spending crisis.
Romney on Obama:
President Obama started his days in office with the
trillion-dollar stimulus package – the biggest, most careless
one-time expenditure by the federal government in history.
And remember this: the stimulus wasn’t just wasted – it
was borrowed and wasted. We still owe the
money, we’re still paying interest on it, and it’ll be that way
long after this presidency ends in January.
Then there was Obamacare. Even now nobody knows the exact
cost of that new program. And that uncertainty has done great
harm to our economy. Employers aren’t hiring, entrepreneurs
are worried, all because of a massive, European-style entitlement
that Americans didn’t want and can’t afford.
Romney’s record as somone who has experience turning around
troubled financial institutions may be his hottest hand in this
race, and it is certainly a qualification the country needs in the
next president. There nevertheless remain
serious questions about the price tag of his actual policy
proposals, since he is vague about his domestic spending cuts and
specific about his defense budget increases.

Obama Is A Tarpster, And Romney Is A Tarpster.
Obama Orchestrate Obamacare, And Romney Orchestrated Romneycare.
Aaaaaand,
" But the story of Romney's supposed Olympic triumph isn't as simple as he wants you to believe. Rather, his success as president of the 2002 winter games was due to the unprecedented amount of federal money he procured to organize the most expensive Olympics in American history. And coming from a candidate who's spent his campaign railing against federal spending and earmarks, it's another breathtaking example of Romney's hypocrisy.
The Salt Lake games got more taxpayer dollars than all of the previous U.S.-hosted Olympics combined: a whopping $1.3 billion. For comparison, the 1984 games in L.A. received $75 million and the 1996 games in Atlanta received $609 million.
Romney's campaign is already pushing back by saying that the extra money was necessary for security. But our money went to much more than security, including $30 million for parking lots, $2 million for sewer systems, and $33,000 for an Olympic horse adoption program."

His hottest hand is, and must always be in this race, that obama's record is one of unmitigated and unrelieved failure.
Whereas Carville said: "It's the economy stupid,"
for Romney the refrain must be "it's obama's record stupid."
Obama's record is so bad, so disastrous, so catastrophic for so very many people in this country and for the country at large, that it dictates the conclusion that obama MUST be removed regardless of who the alternative is.
Every rational person knows obama cannot possibly warrant reelection with his record.
That must be the driving theme for Romney
RJ| 5.15.12 @ 1:05PM
Fully agree with you. This race is all about Obama's miserable record and Romney convincing voters that he is a reasonable alternative. As the race continues more and more voters will see Obama as leading America down a path we don't want to take.

I guess you would rather go back to the Bush era. Back to the same policies that took this country on the brink of total financial disaster. An invasion into a country that was based on a lie, more tax cuts for the rich. It was not Obama who outsourced your jobs. I wasn't Obama who took us into two unpaid wars. It wasn't Obama who deregulated Wall St and big business. But this is what you want to go back to. How many jobs could have been created if the Jobs Bill and Transportation Bill were passed? Do you really believe that the Republican Party has your best interest at heart? I may not agree with Obama on everything, but I do believe he is on the working man's side.

Romney was saying the other day that actually cutting spending would hurt the economy--he has as much a grasp on economics as Obama-- a dyed in the wool Keynesian.

To the extent he's not just flat-out lying about the state of the American economy, Romney is just flat-out stupid.

The Protectionist| 5.15.12 @ 8:26PM
Ultimately, none of our parties have the solution. All three parties have unwittingly submitted to Karl Marx's proposition that the fastest way to destroy capitalism is with free trade, while obvlious to Daniel Webster's claim that the number one reason we have our US Constitution was to stop free trade with Britain under the Article of Confederation due to the economic chaos it had unleashed. Republicans became economic mirror images of the Democrats when they adopted free trae in the 1960s. Protectionism never had a theoretical foundation and thus was extinquished by modern economic theory. A daring response to this sorry state of affairs can be found at rescuingeconomics.wordpress.com which argues there has never been a sound theory of economics. The associated book is a lengthy analysis of the 200 year history of economic thought which has brought us to where we are today and attempts to build a new school built on the forgotten legacy of American protectionism.

The fire was started under Geo. W. Bush, but that is so easy for you to forget. Are you better off than you were four years ago when on economy was on the brink of total collapse by the Bush's policies? Obama walked in on his first day as President with the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression this being the parting gift of Geo.W.Bush and the Republican's policies. So yeah let's blame it all on Obama. Bush took a surplus and turn it into a deficit within his eight years, brought this country to its knees and you expect Obama to turn it all around in 3 years. At least be realistic. It was not Obama who outsource our jobs. This country would be a lot further along economically if the Republican Party did not stand in his way objecting to everything just to bring him down in hopes of defeating him in 2012. In spite of all of their opposition things are slowly turning . around. Remember who started the fire and how it got started. Now think and be honest do you want to go back to those same policies?
Cokomo| 5.15.12 @ 10:08PM
If you followed Romney you have to admit that he is an out and out liar. While governor his state ranked 47th in job growth.. If he couldn't do better in his state with all his business experience, how will he create jobs for the nation. Romney really can't run on his record. He has no new ideas he just wants to take us back to the Bush policies, but he wants to go further and hurt the working class even more. Romney as President with Republicans controlling the House and Senate will bring this country down to a third world country and you need to be fearful of him. He is not an honest person. Everytime he opens his mouth it is a lie
