This is turning absurdist. Six full days after the mob beating
in Mobile involving 20 people or so (with two reports now calling
it as many as 40), with ALL those involved supposedly living on the
same street, Mobile police still have arrested only one man and
said they doubt they will ever arrest more than three others. But
it gets worse: The man arrested is already out on bond, despite a
lengthy criminal record.
Meanwhile, police are now casting doubt on the story of the
man’s family, claiming they have changed their story, even though
nothing they are saying is really a change from what they have told
others for days.
See here.
I live in Mobile. I don’t want to believe what I am about to
say. But I am now suspecting that officials in Mobile are trying to
sweep this all under the rug in order to avoid more national
attention of an unwanted sort. At first I thought it was innocent
wishful thinking on their part in denying that this was a bigger
incident than it was; now, unless I see otherwise, I am suspecting
something more obstinately, willfully blind.
We should not sit back and let a man be beaten by 20 people, or
beaten by several while a dozen or more incited them to continue
the beating, and accept some bogus contention that only three or
four deserve arrests and that this was all just nothing to worry
much about because it was the continuation of an ongoing personal
dispute (with no racial connotations, supposedly, although in the
end that is only slightly material).
What the police report comports not at all with my own, fairly
brief personal on-scene investigation, nor with more extensive
on-scene investigations by several other mainstream news
organizations.
This smells like a bit of a cover-up.
It is a cover-up that would never occur if the race of the
people involved were reversed.
We must all be dedicated to color-blind justice, and a
color-blind society. This is anything but.
I don’t care what the races are that are involved. I don’t care
if the skin color is magenta with chartreuse freckles. I want
justice. I want accuracy. I want truth.
This is NOT racial rabble-rousing. This is an insistence that
the truth come out and put in full context: The context is
something in between a “revenge for Trayvon” thing and a mere,
totally non-racial personal dispute. I truly believe that the
overwhelming majority of American blacks and whites are not racist.
But I also believe the media applies horrendous double-standards
that excuse some racism while seeing other racism where it doesn’t
exist.
Without the full story, all sides will believe the worst, and
nobody will learn anything.
I am not interested in seeing some wort of bogus “hate crimes”
prosecution. I just want prosecutions, period. And not just three
or four, much less the pitiful single arrest that we’ve seen so
far. Worse, for the man arrested to already be out on bond is
absurd, considering that he has such a long rap sheet. Usually, if
somebody has been sentenced to long terms, but had part of those
terms suspended, the suspensions carry with them a probationary
period as well. it defies belief to think that none of the several
suspended sentences carries a probation through which the older
charges are reinstated upn further arrest, or at least with some
stipulation that bond be higher, or impossible, to get if the
subsequent arrest is for a serious violent crime.
This just smells to high heaven.
There is no excuse for us to be sitting here today with not a
single person in jail, six days after a mob beating. Meanwhile, the
Mobile police darn well ought to be patrolling Delmar Drive, and
providing protection for all its residents, black and white
alike.

It sounds like it is time to update / rewrite the Southern Classic “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
Does anyone know any good writers who could take on such a literary challenge?

By ya bosses, I mean the following, AH:
'......Earlier this week, President Barack Obama told Rolling Stone that he gets his news from, among other sources, "Trig Truther" Andrew Sullivan. As Ed Lasky notes at American Thinker, "there is an even more checkered history involving Andrew Sullivan, and that involves Israel and American Jews."Lasky writes:Sullivan has derided Israel as "Greater Israel" -- a slam used by Israel-critics who claim that Israel desires to expand its territory at its neighbors' expense (how about Gaza, how about the Sinai, how about the withdrawal from Lebanon?).He has defended the validity and veracity of the now notorious Goldstone report that accused Israel of war crimes (even Goldstone has renounced the work bearing his name), has continually downplayed the threat from Iran, and constantly uses the term "neo-cons" in relation to American supporters of Israel, despite of (or perhaps more likely because of) its anti-Semitic connotations.Even his fellow columnist at The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, has taken Sullivan to task for his anti-Israel obsession.Yet, Barack Obama would rely on the excellent analysis of world affairs by Andrew Sullivan rather than on broadcast news, various newspapers, and the various and vast resources available to the president of the Unites States.
When the views and wisdom of the likes of Jeremiah Wright are no longer readily available, I guess Andrew Sullivan will serve in a pinch.....'

Mr. Hillyer, I stopped revering anyone involved in law enforcement at all last summer.
I wrote about it here on these pages under a different name.
The place: Norfolk, Virginia.
Corrupt, bad, power trip, ugly, abusive, vain, power hungry, cops with zero fears of being called out or having to face any penalties for abusing a normal citizen doing absolutely nothing wrong.
I have very, very grave reservations about much of our law enforcement community and the judges that they work with.
I now have a recently retired law enforcement friend who can talk for hours and hours and days about law enforcement abuses and bad behavior due to his thirty-five plus years of beat to senior leadership roles.
I may learn for 100% truth (I am about at the 75% mark now) that they are openly and fully involved in international prostitution with international students that come to the East Coast every summer. They like it and use it and expand it not just for the money but for the "honey." And cops love their honey, particularly when they can get it on the cheap and "while on duty."
The Bible tells us that we need God in our lives. And the truth is that most people do not have God in their lives. This means that they will behave badly often and particularly when they believe there are no consequences or they won't get caught.
Like USSS agents who get buzzed, pay for prostitutes and party down just hours before going on duty (although they are already on duty) and then lie about it when confronted. Same, same with military attaches.
Please reveal, why would the Mobile police "culture" be that markedly different than the known fully corrupt New Orleans police culture?

I appreciate Mr. Hillyer shining a light on this story, as it provides additional context to the Martin/ Zimmerman case, and how it relates to the coverage of stories of crime, and where race comes into a matter, and who injects it. Despite that, I would caution against becoming too emotional or losing perspective.
Bail is granted in most non-capital cases, as the Constitution sets forth. As of this writing, the victim Owens is still alive, so it is hardly a travesty that someone who participated in his assault and was subsequently identified and arrested would have bail set. As the type (secured or unsecured, cash only, OR bond) and amount of bail required is not noted here, it is difficult to make any judgment of how this defendant or this case is being treated any differently than any other defendant in Mobile, or Alabama, the South or the entire United States.
My advice to Mr. Hillyer would be to continue to ferret out the facts in this matter. Do not allow any strong feelings to try to turn this into something it is not. The perception of injustice in the Martin / Zimmerman case was inflamed by editing a 911 tape, releasing a photo of Martin as a cute pre-adolescent instead of a tattooed teen, characterizing Zimmerman as a white cop wannabe with a criminal history, etc.[While the link in the story above provides some additional perspective in the story, I’m not sure that the advancement of the fact that Mr. Owens had a former black girlfriend’s name tattooed on his neck establishes a sympathetic non-racist bona fide (say, in the manner that Mr. Zimmerman tutored African-American youths)].
Please maintain your objectivity. Leave the omission, editing or twisting of facts or entering irrelevant and easily distinguishable cases like the seven decade old murder of Emmett Till to the likes of Sharpton and the race-baiters.
albert constantine jr.| 4.27.12 @ 10:02PM
More than 12 hours after this was originally posted, and five hours after it was re-posted, I reiterate to Mr. Hillyer:
If there are facts, please report them.
"Usually, if somebody has been sentenced to long terms, but had part of those terms suspended, the suspensions carry with them a probationary period as well. it defies belief to think that none of the several suspended sentences carries a probation through which the older charges are reinstated upn further arrest, or at least with some stipulation that bond be higher, or impossible, to get if the subsequent arrest is for a serious violent crime."
If you are aware of a fact here, please expose it. Otherwise, you risk sounding likean uninformed race-baiter, which is why I criticize Al Sharpton and his ilk.
If the late (and presumbly condemned) Johnny Cochran might have said:
"If the facts come in too late,
please don't speculate".
If there is something defective about the Mobile Police or the Mobile Mayor's Office, please unearth it and report it here. Otherwise, please continue to investigate the investigation, and then present facts.

as someone who grew up in AL, I am wholly embarrassed. Put in context, what is going on today is no different and no better than some of the sham "investigations" that occurred when blacks were victims. What is different is that today, we have a White House that encourages this sort of thing. At least the ones in the old days pretended to be outraged.
Oldefarte| 4.27.12 @ 10:59AM
What I'm going to say is truthful, and it also may be beyond that but who cares! This situation is way beyoned Mobile, Alabama and extends to D.C. The Martin case in Florida was also a local issue that was used by IMHO this current governmental administration to [as Emmanuel once proclaimed] TO NEVER LET A CRISIS GO TO WASTE (POLITICALLY). The reasons why Jackson and Sharpton were involved in the Martin case is/was orchestrated by this administration accordingly. Also this Alabama case is likewise so manipulated, as the local authorities in Mobile are obviously not listening to their constituents or local citizenry, but instead to the political powers in Washington DC. As has been previously reported, the current US DofJ has been completely staffed with radicalized attorneys and apparently only considers white-on-black crime actionable by their department, has filed suit against Alabama, Arizona and other states over their inactment of state illegal immigration legislation, this is the reason why this Mobile Alabama case is now being ignored by both the local and the nation authorities. The current highly partisaned political operatives now running our government are instigating a divide and conquer war for political purposes, and this is extremely dangerous to our nation. As I've said too many times, 11/4/08 was a huge mistake by the voters of this country for numerous reasons, and this is just one of them. The office of POTUS is the most powerful office in the world, and for voters to haphazardously turn over the keys to same with its inherent powers is and was beyond STUPIDITY. It may make writers like Quin and his readers feel better when such things are brought forth into the light of knowledge from his editorials, but the fact remains that there is little or nothing that can be done about this situation until November. People/voters have to get their collective heads out of their backsides, use the common sense that G-d provided to them and to vote intelligently in November. When the guilt over slavery causes citizens to STUPIDLY vote for political candidates in order to elect a candidate solely due to the color of skin [and to ignore the lack of experience, or the radicalness of political philosophy indicated by that candidates prior activities or words], then there is nothing that can remedy those erroneous votes until the next election comes about [as is said, THE CAT IS ALREADY OUT OF THE BAG]. Again......IT'S THE DEMOCRATS, STUPIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
