Another 60 Minutes Hatchet Job on Israel

I watched 60 Minutes and saw Bob Simon’s story on the exodus of Christians from Israel and the West Bank and thought it was a complete load of rubbish.

Simon blamed Israel’s security fence and checkpoints for this exodus. His sanctimony was unbearable whether he was berating Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren for calling the President of CBS about the segment or when he asked left-wing Israeli journalist Ari Shavit, “Do you think the Israeli government ever thinks of the fact that if Christians aren’t being treated well here, and America is an overwhelmingly Christian country, that this could have consequences?”

Well, I think of a majority of American Christians believe that Christians are being treated far more harshly in Iraq, Syria and Egypt than in Israel. How many Christian churches have been burned down by Israelis? How many Christians have been murdered inside Israel? And yet 60 Minutes singles out Israel for scorn. Well, it’s not the first time. In a 2009 story about Jewish settlements, Simon described Israel as an Apartheid state.

Any segment 60 Minutes does on Israel (and for that matter the Middle East) should be looked upon with the sternest possible skepticism.

Before the National Zionists stole Israel about 30% of the population of old Palistine was Christian. The Christians, Muslims and the small Jewish community lived in relative peace for hundreds of years. In Iraq under Hussain, and in Syria under the Assads, Christian commmunities had relative freedom to practice their faith. The Bath parties in both places had many Christian leaders and members. Both places were mostly secular in their treatment of religion. Now the USA is allied with 2 extremly anti-Christian regimes Israel and Saudia Arabia. The Israeli's want all Christians out and hate them with a passion. But they need the Christians for support. So they push the Christians out by it making hard for them to live there. Most Christians have left for elsewhere. Of course the Saudi's refuse even the semblence of allowing the Christians to practice their faith. Why the hell should Christians spend any blood and treasure for these 2 filthy kleptocrat, regimes? Neither one of them can stand on their own 2 feet without us. Let them rot on their own.

How can you seriously say Saudi Arabia is anti-Christian? Any evidence for that my brother? You may feel that way, without any evidence, but it doesn't make it true. If you said anti-Shiite, that is another matter altogether, as Shiites are viewed as heretics (not infidels). But in terms of Christians, it is simply not true.

Perhaps I'm the only one that didn't know that Christians were leaving the Holy areas of Israel in such large quantities, no matter what the reason. I do know how harshly Christians (and Jews) are treated in the Muslim world as that is constantly in the news.

I was under the impression that news was to designed to inform you of things you didn't know or realize. Hmmmm....

If the segment left any question as to the agenda pursued, it was laid to rest by the production decision to include what should have been kept off-camera, Amb. Oren being challenged by Simon for calling the Chairman of CBS. It doesn't fit the story if the story is what it purports to be. But if the story purpose is to make Israel look bad, it fits.

Also, Oren was justified in his concerns. In addition to the examples mentioned above, Simon was exposed in the critical Richard Landes film "Pallywood" for running a story full of manufactured evidence: staged battle scenes, staged injuries, a wildly inflated casualty count. Pallywood ignited an evolutionary change in my entire world view in 2006. It's on YouTube.

Goldstein must assume readers lack critical thinking skills. You must stick to the issues if you hope to make a case. The CBS piece was far from "a hatchet job". Actually, it wasn't rigorous enough, and avoided offend certain audiences. Palestinian Christian neighborhoods are said to be under "Israeli control", as opposed to "Israeli occupation", for example. Palestinian "terrorism" accepts Israeli definitions, uncritically, as though Palestinians aren't under occupation.

Note how the Palestinian Christians frame their own situation and define themselves, as opposed to the CBS host and the Israelis. They define themselves as Palestinians, and as Christian Palestinians. The mother who said they will stay, as it's their cross to bear, wasn't speaking to Muslim persecution, but to Israeli occupation and persecution. The Palestinian Christian businessman said he's never heard a Palestinian Christian say they were leaving because of Muslim persecution, although he's aware it sells well to an American audience.

Knowing Palestinian Christians who have moved to the US from Jerusalem, rest assured, it was because of Israeli persecution of Palestinian Arabs. Even the disingenuous Israeli columnist got it wrong, purposely, when he spoke of Christians getting caught in the middle. In fact, they are persecuted as Palestinians, even if they happen to be Christian as well, and the majority of Palestinians are Muslim. The majority of Palestinians being Muslim has been the case for over 1000 years.

Ethnic cleansing in all its forms no matter who is at the recieving end of it is wrong. However just as in Yugoslavia when a people are the victims of attrocities in the past (Serbs suffered unspeakable horrors during WWII at the hands of Croat fascists and Bosniak and Albanian Muslims allied with Hitler) they tend to want to deal out what was done to them. As for 1930's or pre-1930's Palestine I do not know enough of the subject to comment. All I can say is that if Jews were being targeted because of their support for the creation of a zionist state in Palestine at that time then it would definitely put the attacks in a political context.

Something that does not get mentioned enough is just how brutal they are to their own kind if they dare step out of line and treat Jews like human beings. Dimitry, as a traditional, Latin-rite Catholic, I understand what you are saying. The Church--comprising all peoples, tribes, and tongues--is spiritual Israel. Evangelical Christians ascribe a special spiritual significance to the state of Israel, but the nation of Israel today is not the chosen people of God--Christians are. This is not to say, however, that God is finished with Israel. The Book of Romans makes it clear that, in the end, God will have mercy on the Jews.

David T...God indeed has mercy on the Jews, but there is not one kind of salvation for the gentile and one for the Jew. The truly Orthodox Christian view on the matter is that everything is up to God and to put limits on God is to put Him in the box of human reasoning that He is clearly above being the Creator of All. I am not anti-semitic by any stretch of the imagination. I have nothing against Jews either as a people or a religion, but I do have problems with the zionist state of Israel how it came to be and how it treats the people whom were pushed off their own land in '47.
