Rick Santorum’s remaining opponents for the Republican
presidential nomination have all released statements reacting to
the former senator’s suspension of his campaign.
Mitt Romney: Senator Santorum is an able and
worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he
ran.
Newt Gingrich: I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s
supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and
join us as we bring these values to Tampa. We know well that only a
conservative can protect life, defend the Constitution, restore
jobs and growth and return to a balanced budget.
Ron Paul (through a spokesman): Congratulations
to Senator Santorum on running such a spirited campaign. Dr.
Paul is now the last – and real – conservative alternative to Mitt
Romney. We plan to continue running hard, secure delegates,
and press the fight for limited, constitutional government in
Tampa.
The president was too busy inveighing against wealth creation to
comment at the time of this post.

God bless Santorum, who waged a spirited campaign for liberty and the limited government.
florin| 4.11.12 @ 10:43AM
Yes, Rick Santorum ran a great campaign but he had barely made his withdrawal statement before gingrich jumped in and 'humbly' asked Rick's supporters to support him...gingrich is shameless; it's all about himself - he's not even on the radar, his checks bounce, he hasn't paid his staff, he's having fun getting all the attention and visiting zoos - at least Rick Santorum is a good family man with the grace and courage to do what is good for his family and his country...newt has none of these attributes so why doesn't he and callista just slink away?
Dai Alanye | 4.11.12 @ 3:56PM
Every one of those comments was self-serving, including Romney's. Mitt is a great guy for being congratulatory to one's face, while knifing one in the back immediately after.
Molly| 4.10.12 @ 4:38PM
Newt has never been humble about anything. I am saddened to see Santorum go, but we do have a country to take back. As much as I loathe Romney and all RINOs, I fear Obama and what he will do if we allow him to stay another 4 years. I will vote to save my country - not for Romney, but against Obama!
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 4:40PM
Gingrich is simply looking for additional support so as to get a better hearing for his ideas at the convention.
We NEED Gingrich's ideas in the platform of our party!
Sean| 4.10.12 @ 5:42PM
What ideas are those? Global warming, cap and trade, TARP.
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 5:47PM
Making the United States the foremost energy supplier on the planet; overhauling the civil service, insisting on conservative excellence at every level of the federal government.
Just for starters....
aware| 4.10.12 @ 6:26PM
Hilarious!
Dai Alanye | 4.11.12 @ 3:58PM
Drek isn't necessarily stupid on other matters, but on Gingrich he's completely without a clue.
Sean| 4.10.12 @ 5:42PM
What ideas are those? Global warming, cap and trade, TARP.
Ken| 4.10.12 @ 9:41PM
All ideas also championed by Romney. I have more confidence that Newt truly abandoned them than Mittens.
Al Adab| 4.10.12 @ 4:51PM
So, at long last the GOP can follow another "moderate" republican to defeat. Romney lies to the left of such notables as Dole, Ford and McCain. Way to stand for principle GOP.
Apparently the Conservative Movement needs to evaluate what role, if any, it may yet play in the future, if any, of America and Constitutional government. Whether there is still time to stop the final establishment of the administrative social-welfare state is the question at hand.
Bob| 4.10.12 @ 5:08PM
Interesting comments from the candidates. After running brutal ads against Santorum, that's the least that Romney could have said. Newt is asking Santorum to throw his support behind him, and Ron Paul still thinks he has a chance.
In all these races, if either Santorum or Gingrich had dropped out Romney would have come in 2nd or worse. I say Santorum should throw his support behind Gingrich so we don't have another moderate candidate to lose to Obama.
Ken| 4.10.12 @ 9:46PM
If either Santorum or Gingrich had been big enough to withdraw several weeks ago in favor of the other we likely could have stopped Romney by uniting the conservative vote. Now we are going to be stuck with a candidate that most of us conservatives find entirely unsuitable. It is a shame that we've allowed the GOP estasblishment again to triumph by dividing and conquering.
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 5:49PM
Gingrich is angling to impose real solutions on the party.
And we need to help him.
He can't get the nomination now, but his ideas, his solutions, are absolutely necessary, and can't be allowed to fall through the cracks.
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 6:03PM
Just Friday past Robert Stacy McCain writes a hit piece on Gingrich speculating that he's going to cut a deal with Romney.
Here comes today with Santorum bailing out of the race.
Wasn't RSM the inside guy with all the inner tid bits from the Santorum campaign?
So how was it there wasn't any inkling of this withdraw from RSM's reportage?
What good is it to be that close to the campaign, to be that much of a cheerleader, if there isn't any quo for all the quid that RSM had been tossing their way?
Windy City Commentary| 4.10.12 @ 6:36PM
So, it looks like Santorum is positioning himself to be the GOP establishment's candidate in 2016 or 2020
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 6:42PM
What will he have to bring to the table then, that he hasn't already presented to the party throughout this campaign season?
What executive experience is he likely to pick up in the interim?
In what way will he be able to buff up his legislative record?
He was a flawed candidate, and I can't see how that can be repaired over the next four years. If Romney goes down, they'll be Republican Governors stepping into the race, and their records will be stand in a strong and sharp contrast to the mixed record of Santorum.
So let Santorum go.... We can do much better.
Tom| 4.10.12 @ 7:22PM
So let GINGRICH go.... We can do much better.
There, fixed it for you.
New Gingrich is a piece of political junk and a giant bucket of sleeze. He had his chance during the 1990s, and did nothing but have repeated cave-ins to Clinton. HOPEFULL, this election will be the last time he plays any sort of role in a national election.
Good-bye, Newt, and good riddance!!
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 7:36PM
Gingrich is 68 years old, so for him, it was now or never. He's not likely to haunt the GOP future with a specter of him running for the nomination.
Raymond| 4.10.12 @ 6:51PM
Hillyer may jump off of a bridge tonight.
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 6:56PM
Hillyer has been sane compared to RSM!
WL| 4.10.12 @ 11:58PM
No, he's busy hoping for Rick to rise from the ashes and announce that today's announcement was a joke...
But tomorrow when he realizes that it's over...he'll be on the Romney train writing about his sit-down with Mitt.
Hillyer is Am. Specs Bill O'Reilly....
Tonight Bill O is all over FNC re-living his 8 year old interview with Chris Wallace....
Remind you of anybody? Hillyer, that's who....you can bet that "true to form" Quin will be cracking the whip on us before too long because us Hobbits don't want to go along with Mitt's global warming CRAP. That's what he did before switching from Boehner's payroll to Ricks...
Come on Quin...Have a laugh will you.
Larry| 4.10.12 @ 7:04PM
RSM and Hillyer remind me of Delta Dawn.
Drek| 4.10.12 @ 7:36PM
That's cold blooded......
WL| 4.10.12 @ 11:40PM
How about that brokered convention Clint?????
The tea party Rebellion heads to a laugh at Clint because he is a jackass Party.
WL| 4.10.12 @ 11:43PM

Where you at Jackass in Wi.????????
Paul isn't even on the radar because he is perfectly happy to step to the side for his boy Mitt....
He helped shave off some percentage points for the other two...didn't win a damn thing...kept you KOOKS occupied long enough for his BFF Mitt to get the gig....
You idiots never learn.
WL| 4.10.12 @ 11:46PM
We're never gonna win anything...because our Ralph Nader Styled weirdo brigade always splits everything up. At least they all get around their candidates on the Left...
Not a goons...NO...they ain't votin' fo' anyBuddy!!! Cause Mahmoud's buddy Ron Paul didn't get squat for votes.

Amen Clint: Romney said he wants to turn the Middle East policy over to his buddy of 36 years Bibby Netanyahu. One good thing about Obama is that he absolutly hates Netanyahu, as does Sarkozy. They both were caught on mike saying how much they hate him and what a liar he is. If Romney is a friend of Netanyahu, he is an enemy of the American people.
WL| 4.11.12 @ 12:21AM
Then how exactly do you fellas explain Ron Paul's detente with Mitt?
WL| 4.11.12 @ 12:26AM
ANY fair minded person KNOWS that Ron Paul did as much to get Romney the nomination as Karl Rove...
He sat back...and only got aggressive with anyone who went after Romney...but NEVER against Romney...
Now, he is making a big kerfuffle about whether he will support Romney....which will end up helping Obama...
This list is getting longer by the minute.

Even though Ron Paul is looked at as a long shot maybe he can bring some focus to the value of small bsuiness to economy and away from all the other hyped rhetoric that has nothing to do with creating jobs.
Red Phillips | 4.11.12 @ 1:32PM
“Dr. Paul is now the last – and real – conservative alternative…”
If only the Republican primary electorate understood that, which they don’t.
The person Santorum dropping out hurts the most is Gingrich. People expect Paul to stay in the race because he is a message candidate, but Gingrich isn’t a message candidate and only looks like a sore loser by hanging on.
