If this report is any indication, Rick Santorum seems as likely to double down as to drop out. That certainly fits in with his recent pattern of increasing the sharpness and frequency of his attacks on Mitt Romney. Santorum has also been talking up the similarities between Romney and Barack Obama. In the end, the voters in Pennsylvania will have much to say about Santorum’s plans.

UPDATE: It looks as though Santorum does indeed intend to double down.

He needs to go away now and forever.

The guy that voted for McCain/Feingold, yet runs around telling us all how Mr. Conservative he is, needs to go away.

Just go away.

Tom| 4.5.12 @ 5:21PM

If Romney turns out to be the nominee, many of those who share Santorum's principles will most assuredly "go away"--and are NOT coming back in November.

Sue| 4.5.12 @ 6:00PM

I read that Rove said Romney earned the nomination.
I ask at what cost has he earned it?

Tom| 4.5.12 @ 7:22PM

As far as Romney is concerned, It's all about Mitt. He will say and do ANYTHING to be the Republican nominee for President, and couldn't care less what the fall out will be.

Mitt Romney| 4.6.12 @ 10:01AM

I bought it, Sue.

Drek| 4.6.12 @ 1:40PM

I'm no fan of Romney.

But my opposition to Romney doesn't mean I'll put up with a fake like Santorum.

Santorum no more deserves the nomination than does Romney.,

Dai Alanye | 4.6.12 @ 8:26PM

Romney is simply too experienced a loser for his main competitor to give it up yet.

Dai Alanye | 4.6.12 @ 8:51PM

Drek has serious problems with the facts or engages in deliberate distortion.

This per ontheissues.org:
Santorum voted NO on the McCain-Feingold bill in 2002, later calling it "an affront to personal freedoms and liberty." Before, in 1997, Santorum offered an alternative campaign finance reform bill, ensuring that "contributing to campaigns must be completely voluntary." The practical effect of his proposal would have been that unions couldn't use their members' dues on political activity without their permission.

This per Club for Growth:
In the biggest political free speech debate of the last ten years, Santorum was on the right side. He voted NO on the oppressive McCain-Feingold bill in 2002, later calling it “an affront to personal freedoms and liberty.”

Not the first time Drek has got his facts wrong. Not even the tenth time, in fact, when he's attempted to mislead on Santorum.

ml| 4.5.12 @ 3:01PM

He is not conservative. He will not get the nominee.

Jake| 4.5.12 @ 3:09PM

Reengineer is a euphemism for rearranging the deck chairs.
This really calls into question Santorum's judgement.
Obviously , he doesn't have anyone around him with the common sense and political savvy he also lacks.
Santorum has never run a business or met a payroll and it shows.
You don't decide to expand a business when it's already floundering , which is exactly what he's doing.
Instead of knowing when to fold em , Santorum's decided to bet the house and the baby's milk
( perhaps quite literally ) on a venture that is already doomed.
The time to reengineer was back in the summer of 2011.

rightasrain| 4.5.12 @ 3:16PM

Give it up, Rick! How can we miss you if you won't go away?

We hope!!

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 3:24PM

Santorum's unwavering support of big-labor destroyed his campaign. He's just another Mike Huckabee, may mull an anchor bid in one of those talk-radio show in Pittsburgh.

rightasrain| 4.5.12 @ 3:32PM

Funny you should mention Huckabee. I read an article just today suggesting him as the perfect VP selection on the theory that he would capture the evangelicals but is much more likeable than Santorum.

aware| 4.5.12 @ 6:09PM

Good GAWD! Romney AND Huckabee! Could there be a more perfect picture of abject defeat for conservatism than that?

Surely that would prompt some soul searching among conservatives as to what the hell went wrong! That would be the only possible positive out of such a nightmare scenario.

We Are Being Set Up By The RINO-CINO Flunkie Stooges For The Ruling Elites' Frontman Mittens Romney.

These Are The RINO-CINO Flunkie Stooges Who Gave Us The Serial Traitor To Conservatism, John McCain Of McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy,McCain-Lieberman,Gang Of 14, Opposing Bush Tax Cuts Of 2001 & 2003,TARP.

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 3:56PM

Romney's VP list:
1. Pat Toomey
strength: PA is a swing state, a Tea Partier, former Club for Growth leader.
2. Marco Rubio
strength: FL is a swing state, name recognition, a Tea Partier, the Latino votes.
3. Mitch Daniel
strength: IN is a swing state, a great "fiscal conservative" and pro free-market governor, helped passed the "Right-to-Work" law.
4. Kelly Ayotte
strength: NH is a swing state, a Catholic, crime fighter litigator, Tea Partier, and the women votes, ............"Lady in Red" factor.
5. Chris "Great" Christie
strength: NJ will turn blue, name recognition, former litigator, a fiscal hawk governor,........the "Rock-star" image.
6. Paul "Genius" Ryan
strength: WI will turn blue, name recognition, a fiscal hawk legislator,........the "Rock-star" image.

My pick: Gov. Chris Christie
Obama will be forced to campaign in a "safe" blue state, NJ, while Gov. Christie will be favourite to deliver NJ for GOP. Gov. Christie will help fix the economy and never surrender to the big-labors or bureaucrats. Recently, he traveled Israel and vowed to thwart Iran's fascist regime and its nuclear threat.

President: Mitt Romney
VP: Chris Christie

Your comments, please.

rightasrain| 4.5.12 @ 4:24PM

Christie isn't nearly conservative enough--he's Romney with a personality. I like Rubio or Ryan.

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 4:46PM

Ryan voted for TARP, and Rubio's immigration policy is "foggy". Christie will never surrender to those union thugs. He's the courage and charisma.

rightasrain| 4.5.12 @ 6:25PM

But Christie is for Cap and Trade, gun control and the Ground Zero Mosque. He has nominated some very questionable judges here in NJ. His apostasies far outweigh Ryan's.

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 10:11PM

And Christie will deliver NJ, stealing 15 electoral votes from Obama. We need that.

Jack in Wi.| 4.5.12 @ 4:30PM

Romney and Christie, a blowhard and a tub of lard. The perfect ticket for the Republicans. The 2 northeastern liberals are a perfect ticket for the Republicans.

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 4:47PM

these two northeastern republicans will give Obama "heartburn."

Oldefarte| 4.6.12 @ 3:13PM

What about Scott Walker as a VP, huh [especially if the AH's of his state allow the labor unions to run him out of town]??????

Windy City Commentary| 4.5.12 @ 6:21PM

New Hamsphire has like 3 electoral votes. Kelly Ayotte? You've got to be kidding me. You know what else Pat Toomey has done? Vocally supported the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".
Paul Ryan is not a genious, he just reads the budget and bills like congressmen are supposed to do.

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 10:09PM

Who is your VP?

Bill| 4.5.12 @ 10:15PM

Hello, Windy City,
I'm thinking of Kelly Ayotte because she was endorsed by Sarah Palin when she ran for the senate race, and was the former AG of NH. She will be able to bring back those women votes and fill the void of a female executive. That's exciting. Also, she's only 42 and the "Lady in Red."

And, you're still a racist, Bigot Bill.

PCP Smoker| 4.5.12 @ 10:17PM

Lame analysis. Typical crap one finds on DC Conservative blogs. Wrap up your little plan with the slogan: "Conservatism is racist, sexist, and antigay, we are "Me-too",but in a slight lesser way!"

Marco2| 4.5.12 @ 4:02PM

Where and when is this Tea Party Rebellion Open Convention going to be held? The Republican Party's presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, might want to drop by, considering all the Tea Party votes he's getting.

Clint| 4.5.12 @ 5:01PM

Do Your Homework, Mitten's Kitten.

Rasmussen Poll:
Friday, March 16, 2012
Santorum now leads Romney 38% to 33% among Tea Party voters, after the two men were tied a week ago. Romney leads Santorum 42% to 23% among those not affiliated with the movement.

The Tea Party Rebellion Heads To An Open Convention.

As of today, Romney leads Santorum by five points. Goodbye, Ricy"big-labor"Santo.

Occam's Tool| 4.6.12 @ 8:38PM

Bill: Do not use the term "Santo" to discuss Santorum to this Cub fan, please. Ronnie was a great man.

Oldefarte| 4.6.12 @ 3:16PM

We went through this yesterday, idiot....remember? Overall polls indicate Romney ahead, dufus! Maybe you're now referring to a poll of the TEA PARTY only, huh? What tea party, you and TOO SHORT SHORTS in LJ?????

JP| 4.5.12 @ 4:37PM

If Mitt wins the election, Rick will probably be appointed ambassador to Malta, where he will be safe and out of the way

Tom| 4.5.12 @ 7:24PM

If Romney wins the election, Malta will look better with each passing day, since there is not a dime's worth of difference between what he will do and what Obama will do.

Oldefarte| 4.6.12 @ 3:20PM

Romney [like most everyone else] doesn't really GAS about the RICKSTER FROM PA. Maybe he should be nominated as Ambassador to the Vatican where his talents/interests can be more appropriately put to good use perhaps; or maybe just sent home to make more babies!!!!!!!!

Les| 4.5.12 @ 6:02PM

I have seen his kids onstage with him. They look like they are tired of the whole charade.

Tom| 4.5.12 @ 7:53PM

I have boundless respect for Rick Santorum. Considering where he came from, how underfunded he has been compared to Mr. Electability, and how many pseudo-conservatives that SHOULD have backed him but instead sold their souls for political expediencey, he put on a GREAT campaign regardless of what happens the rest of the way.

Santorum is one of the few Republicans that I have any remaining respect for. Most of the rest are just cheap political hacks who don't deserve the time of day.

For a very long time in the foreseeable future, whether or not somebody supported Santorum in the Spring 2012 primaries will be a litmus test that I intend to strictly apply when it comes to evaluating Republican politicians and alleged conservatives.

apnep| 4.5.12 @ 10:12PM

Texas hasn't voted yet.

Tom| 4.5.12 @ 10:22PM

Go Texas!!

Oldefarte| 4.6.12 @ 3:22PM

Evidently not too many Pennsylvanians agree with you, since Romeny is now leading Santorum in the polling for that state's contest. I'm sure the Vatican or Rome's inhabitants would agree with you though!!!

somnolence| 4.5.12 @ 10:52PM

And if Santorum somehow became the nominee many of us Romney supporters would stay home because of the divisive attitude and pompousness Santorum has shown over the last month. Works both ways, so be prepared to look at yourself in the mirror if Obama is reelected. The topic of contraceptives as pitted against the economy and refusal to deal with the rising cost of gas and miserable housing crisis is just backwards thinking, yet Santorum places it close to the top in priority. So yeah, I can just as easily stay home if Santorum is the nominee. Cheers.

Ted| 4.6.12 @ 8:03AM

Well, Santorum didn't raise the topic of "contraception." Obama and Sebelius did that, and tried to turn a religious freedom issue into a fight on contraceptives. Based on your faulty analysis thus far, you should stay home regardless of whether Mr. Romney is the nominee, because you are woefully ill-informed.

rightasrain| 4.6.12 @ 8:25AM

You're wrong. Santorum did raise the topic of contraception being bad for women and society completely on his own and well prior to the recent controversy about the HHS mandates.

apnep| 4.6.12 @ 12:52PM

What a double-standard that people would stay home if it's anyone other than Mittens. I beg to differ, if Obama gets re-elected, you will be the one who has to look in the mirror. Mittens can't attack Obama on the healthcare the way Santorum can, and p.s. if he's so good, why the heck hasn't he sealed the deal. I can just see it now, Mittens: "Well, Pres. B.O., how's that Obamacare working out for you and the nation?"
B.O.:"Not so great since it was based on YOUR model."
Gimmie a break! Santorum didn't say he was taking anything away from women, or sending them back to the dark ages. What is wrong with placing God in the center of our lives? This nation is founded UNDER GOD.

Oldefarte| 4.7.12 @ 4:57PM

The facts are that Romney will be the R-nominee and that Santorum [and Gingrich less so] brought on this Democrat planned sucker-punch subject of contraception/birth control [which has now has female voters upset and dropped Romney 8% below Obama among them]. Santorum needs to bow out, and any American with a brain needs to support Romney against the alternative Obama. Anyone who STAYS HOME is simply STUPID.....your vote is one of the greatest gifts one posseses in life and to ignore same is ''''''acting stupidly''''''!!!!!!!!!

Pete| 4.7.12 @ 6:41PM

Anyone who supports Romney as a conservative is stupid. Romney brought all the negativity upon himself in the primary by his own campaign tactics. But I see you are already preparing excuses for his lose to Obama.

Pete| 4.7.12 @ 6:43PM

Republicans are such cowards, and are afraid to express their opinions less the media distorts it. This is how the Dems control the GOP, through its own cowardice.

No doubt this is Obama's ETCH-A-SKETCH moment of sorts:
'.....Wasserman Schultz Aide Apologizes for Anti-Jewish Slur Friday, April 6, 2012 10:39 AM
By: Newsmax WiresA part-time aide to Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has apologized for posting a photo captioned with an anti-Semitic slur on her Facebook page in 2006. “I apologize for any harm postings on my Facebook page made years ago may have caused anyone. I meant no offense,” Dani Gilbert said in a statement. The photo, which has been removed, captured some of Gilbert’s friends clowning around, holding up money, and referring to themselves as “Jewbags,” according to news reports.
The young woman, according to Politico, serves as a liaison to the Jewish community on behalf of the DNC. She is the daughter of two of President Barack Obama’s biggest fundraisers in Florida, Mark and Nancy Gilbert, who have raised more than $500,000 for his re-election campaign, Politico reported Friday. DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse defended Gilbert, telling Politico she “has excelled in her role handling Jewish issues.” “No smear driven by the right wing noise machine is going to impact her status as a trusted member of this team,” he added.....'

somnolence| 4.6.12 @ 8:54PM

Romney can clearly point out the differences between state mandated insurance and a federal blanket. Romney can also say that he developed his model after the Heritage Foundation, and he only followed through because of the CONSENSUS in Massachusetts at the time. The topic more than likely won't even be an issue by the time of the debate one way or the other. You can't say the same about true unemployment figures and the price of gas however, and Obama will have a lot of explaining to do there. P.S. Santorum supported Romney in 2008 even with his knowledge about Romneycare.

Pete| 4.7.12 @ 6:38PM

Its a distinction without a difference. Socialized Medicine is socialized medicine whether at the federal or state level. Now Romney wants to tell the Augusta Club what members they should have. Romney should be running as a Democrat.
