In a way, money is the first vetting. The fact that Romney can get men to put their money behind him is to his credit.
There's no getting away from that, even for those of us thoroughly opposed to him.
Accumulating money is as important to a candidate as is recruiting talent to a college football or basketball coach. And success in the former is likely to lead to success where the rubber hits the road, wins and losses.
As for Gingrich's financial wherewithal in the general, {I'm not even going to bother discussing Santorum, he's imploding and appears pretty close to his Howard Dean moment} --------- shouldn't we flip the question to those pushing Romney, and ask them if they are as Republican as they seem, what would be their problem backing Gingrich with money in a general, as presumably they plan to back Romney.
Or are they threatening the party that they will only back a RINO and no one else?
The question then becomes "How Republican are the people behind Romney?" And how committed they are to overturning obama's legislative agenda and turning this country around.

If Gingrich could "implode" merely half as well as Santorum he might still be in the hunt. In fact, a few more impolsions like those in the South recently, and Rick will be leading the race

Antle forgets that it wasn't just Mitt piling on Newt with his money. Both Santorum and Ron Paul were piling on as well. It was essentially three against one. Newt might have survived it if it hadn't been for the Green Monster set loose by Mr. Etch A Sketch.

Presumably if Santorum was the nominee the same people supporting Romney and urging people like me to, would shift their support to Santorum as everyone agrees it is crucial to beat Obama, so Santorum's financial support would increase before the general. If this is not true then we would be left to believe that there are considerable numbers of Republicans, who would prefer Obama to Santorum. If this is what you believe than it proves Santorum's point, that in fact Obama and Romney are closer together than Santorum and Romney, Santorum being more conservative. It then comes down to this, is is Santorum so much less likely to beat Obama than Romney that someone like me should dump Santorum to and get behind Romney. You are delusional if you think that many Conservatives will do this. Romney while better than Obama is a moderate, maybe even a liberal on things like Obamacare and the social issues. His budgets will probably be liek the Bush budgets, we will careen over the cliff at 6o miles an hour as opposed to jet speed with Obama. The more the Romney shills push him down the throat of the rest of us, the more I dislike Romney. Let the election play out. If Santorum really has no shot at stopping Romney from getting to 1144, then Romney can simply ignore him, and focus on Obama now. I can not understand if Romney is so inevitable why does the Romney camp need Santorum out?

The RNC closes the gap. Plus Santorum, and to a lesser extent Newt, has already closed the gap with Romney to a large degree.

If Mitt wins he will leave behind a scorched earth path of destruction. For all of his money, the one thing he has consistently been able to do is destroy the other candidates better than any Democrat could ever do. It isn't really something to be proud of......

The money is overrated. Santorum has had 99% of talk radio, most of Fox and the MSM pimping him.
Dai Alanye | 3.26.12 @ 8:52PM
The problem with Les's argument is that the second sentence is false in its entirety. The first, however, has been proven to be correct by Santorum's success.
