Rick Santorum suggested that voters might choose Barack Obama over Obama Lite. The comments come as respected Republican elders, including Jeb Bush and even the conservative Jim DeMint, have begun to suggest that a failure to coalesce around Mitt Romney will ultimately help Obama. Romney hit back in a statement, “I was disappointed to hear that Rick Santorum would rather have Barack Obama as president than a Republican.”

Not so fast, says Matt Lewis. Lewis argues that Santorum was speaking of a possible voter reaction to an Obama-Romney race, not his own personal preferences. Here is the full Santorum quote:

You win by giving people a choice. You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there. If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate of the future.

Santorum is expected to win Louisiana Saturday. We’ll see what impact that has on calls for Republicans to unite around Romney as the nominee.

What nonsense. Go home, little Ricky, and take your latest toy with you. This distempered boob as President of the United States, what a sick and sorry joke.

Dai Alanye | 3.23.12 @ 1:08PM

It's Romney's surrogate who is to be blamed. All Santorum did was point out the folly of Romney's coming switch to "moderate" from his present persona as a conservative. But perhaps for some on this forum Obama-lite is preferred to a true conservative.

Vern Crisler| 3.23.12 @ 10:53AM

Santorum is absolutely right. It's better to have the devil you know (with a conservative Congress) than a candidate like Romney, who will destroy the Reagan revolution forever in the Republican party. Unfortunately, we now appear to have Etch a Sketch voters in the Republican primaries and at "conservative" magazines, who have no problem is selling out principles for the latest Republican snake-oil salesman.

John Drake| 3.23.12 @ 1:40PM

George Bush already dismantled the Reagan coalition. Santorum promises more of the same -- MUCH more! http://youtu.be/y-WezrKqUBQ

You are a joke. Anyone who prefers Obama to Romney or any othe other candidates is an IDIOT.
Get lost, you are a phony, not Republican or conservative.
You have sold out to Obama.

Tom| 3.23.12 @ 4:37PM

To paraphrase the late, great Ronald Reagan: We did not leave the Republican Party and the so-called conservative movement; the Republican Party and the conservative movement left US.

Watching all the so-clled "conservatives" make political whores out of themselves by embracing Romneyism is nothing less than the total capitulation of the conservative movement to the liberal establishment of the Republican Party that TRUE conservatives have been fighting for over half a century.

I like scotch. I prefer Laphroaig. What Santorum is saying is that I might as well get a banana daquiri instead of Johnny Walker Black.

Mender| 3.23.12 @ 11:21AM

I agree with Santorum: I don't think there's much doubt Obama believes in his conduct as President, so when he walks into the debating hall he will put forward a conviction that Mitt Romney can never have. That doesn't mean Santorum just endorsed Obama, folks.

Derek Leaberry| 3.23.12 @ 11:35AM

Obama is going to bring up Romneycare in the debates and in tens of thousands of TV commercials. How does Romney respond?

Obama is going to provide TV commercials of Romney's myriad flip-flops. How does Romney respond?

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 11:53AM

Santorum is absolutely wrong and selfishly so. His terming of Romney as Obama-lite is hypocritical, and what he's saying is that only he/Santorum is a distinct opposite of Obama, which is BS. Any [I repeat ANY] Republican is the OPPOSITE OF any/all Democrats [and especially Obama], and anyone unable to understand same is simply STUPID [according to Forrest G., anyway]. Okay so Romney shums social conservatism matters probably due to his Mormanism, but so be it. Anyone whose private sector education/work experiences as a businessperson [as he claims] automatically qualifies themselves as a true conservative. Any true businessperson concerned with the accounting from balance sheets, income statements, profits/losses is by their very nature conservative. To equate same with a community organizing, socialistic, group of domestic terrorists aka academic lawyers is insane and ludicrous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not so sure I know what a 'tool' is [no doubt a Clitonese Media Matters d8ck-s*&ker;] but I do know a a DUMBARS is, and that is defined as a ''''Romneybots Do America''''''! When I wrote that, I did not know that Santorum had actually said that Romney equals Obama, but now that I do, Santorum is nothing but a GD traitorious, labor union, religious zealot. Even Newt Gingrich stated that Santorum was wrong to say thus [and no one dislikes Romney more than Newt, but he realizes that for someone that is supposedly a Republican to say that is akin to being a traitor]. OMG even Ron Paul would not even utter those falsehoods, which is akin to blasphemy, since Ronald Reagan coined the saying to NOT SPEAK ILL OF FELLOW REPUBLICANS! For the Rickster-runt to say that is heresy, and he should be rightfully kicked out of the Republican Party for doing so. Not only is a worthless Yankee so called Republican prostituting himself to labor unions in Pennsylvania, but he's STUPID besides [Romney rightfully claimed that the Rickster is a economic/financial lightweight, as in he can't even probably balance his own checkbook without a CPA's help]. What a bafoon, and 'Romneybots Do America' can kiss my youknowhat and GTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LiveFreeOrDie| 3.23.12 @ 1:31PM

This is the primaries, now is the time to examine and criticize the candidates. While I don't entirely agree with Santorum, he makes a valid point. Who would you say is more conservative? Romney, unfortunately, has liberal tendencies where Santorum, with all his faults, toes a more conservative line.

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 1:41PM

'Romneybots Do America', try reading and understanding Michael Reagan [hopefully you know WHO HE IS?] :

'.....GOP Primaries Evoke 'The Gong Show'
Thursday, March 22, 2012 11:15 AMBy: Michael Reagan...Gong, Gong, Gong! I don't know about you, but watching the Republican primary season is making me feel like a judge on the "The Gong Show."
I watched or listened to all three candidates after Tuesday night's Illinois primary. I'm still crying. If Mitt, Newt, and Rick had given those uninspiring speeches on Chuck Barris' twisted 1970s amateur talent show, the celebrity panelists would have gang-gonged them in 30 seconds. The speeches Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich gave were the least inspiring of this trying campaign season. Each one was too long, lacking in vision, and boring as hell. I think Santorum is still delivering his Gettysburg Address.
Hasn't anyone on his staff ever heard the advice "less is more"? Don't any of these guys realize that their rambling, dull speeches are carried live on the cable channels?
Win or lose, here's a free idea for one of them to try after the Louisiana primary on Saturday (March 24). First give a quick, sharp, inspiring, enthusiastic, Obama-bashing speech for the TV cameras. Use a teleprompter if you must or, if you want to look Reaganesque, write a few notes on some index cards. Then, after three minutes, say "God bless America!" or "On to the White House!" and exit stage right. Save the rehashes of your positions on healthcare or family values for your supporters in the room. Ditto for your sincere thanks to your loyal cousin Shirley and the assistant precinct captain of Peoria. I have a more strategic suggestion for our three contestants before "The Republican Gong Show" gets to Tampa. If they are truly serious about wanting to beat Obama in the fall, they'd better dump all their advisers now. They each need to find someone like a Michael Deaver or a Lyn Nofziger, the media geniuses who ran my father's campaigns, and listen carefully. The cold truth is that at this point there is only one professional campaign team in this never-ending primary and, like it or not, it's Romney's. The Santorum and Gingrich teams may be more conservative, but they are not well funded and they're amateur league. Newt says Mitt can't beat Obama, but he can't beat Romney or Santorum, and even Ron Paul beat him in Illinois. And Rick says Mitt will say whatever he needs to say to win. Welcome to hardball politics, Rick.Let's face it. There is no road for Santorum or Gingrich to the White House, not even a dirt road. That is unfortunate. But now the primary has turned into a "Stop Romney" campaign and that's much more than unfortunate. It's destructive. And it only helps Obama.
Here's a suggestion for Newt and Rick if they insist on going one-on-one against Romney. Since primary loss after primary loss clearly isn't working, how about a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, and the loser goes home?
Seriously, it's time for Mitt to get some of his own ideas and not take them from Newt (energy) and from Rick (freedom). Without his own "big ideas" and own "vision thing," he will lose. Trust me.
Most importantly, it's time for Mitt to reach out to the conservatives. If he doesn't, he won't ever be president, either, and Obama will get four more years to continue his deconstruction of America.....'

Let's try to kill the myth of Romney-the-businessman. Romney is a financier, and there is a difference.

I would consider someone who set up a chain of pizza parlors a businessman, but a person who played the money game (think Soros and Buffett) does not qualify.

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 2:24PM

Whether a businessman or a financier, they BOTH KNOW AND UNDERSTAND WHAT BALANCE SHEETS, INCOME STATEMENTS, PROFITS/LOSSES etc are; which is incomprehendable to a Chicago community organizer street hustler socialist and his band of Democratic Thieves. Oh, and someone whose crawled in bed with Pennsylvania labor unions for millions of years in DC is neither a businessman nor a financier [and that beez the facts]!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of all the policies that I know of, the one conservatives detest the most out here in fly-over country is ObamaCare. It is the flagship for: abortion, unconstitutional mandates, socialized welfare state, attacking the 1st Amendment, and crippling budget deficits.

ObamaCare is the poster child for Obama's tyranny and Mitt Romney is its father. A nanny-state Socialist at the state level is still a Socialist.

"Rick Santorum suggested that voters might choose Barack Obama over Obama Lite."

No, and you know it. What Santorum said is that voters should prefer Obama to Romney. That's the plain meaning of "we might as well stay with what we have."

I know this site is Santorum For President, but we can read and hear what the guy said. Anyway, Santorum is already trying to take back his gaffe, albeit clumsily.

As for Louisiana, I doubt the mess will have any effect. Evangelicals should give Santorum the state. But in closer primaries this latest stupidity could cost him, just like his robocalls supporting Obama's bailouts in Michigan.

W. James Antle III | 3.23.12 @ 3:27PM

I read him as speaking in the voice of a voter, based on the full context of his statement. But I've provided the full quotation and if people conclude he's speaking in his own voice, fine.

Given your persistent delusion that I am a Santorum supporter, however, I'm not sure you are the first person I'd consult in trying to figure out what someone's words mean.

rightasrain| 3.23.12 @ 3:51PM

Even if he's speaking in the voice of the voter, he's saying that it is understandable if people think Romney and Obama are interchangeable. That is dishonest, disloyal and petty. My former regard for Santorum has curdled. Get out while you still have some dignity, Rick.

Tom| 3.23.12 @ 4:58PM

Romney IS Obama-lite.

I applaud Santorum for speaking the TRUTH in this matter.

Explanantions are a waste! They never work with our modern media. The trick is not to say anything it can pick up and run with.

Santorum still hasn't learned to think in bland, boring platitudes and talk in sound bytes when addressing the media. Because of this it "cuts and pastes" a sound byte from his wordy maunderings that is most convenient for their agenda.

Dai Alanye | 3.23.12 @ 1:17PM

That, and the fact that the Romney propaganda mill, helped by Drudge and others, immediately distorts what is said.

But think what a field day Axelrod and company will have with Romney's record and gaffes.

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 2:37PM

Dai, Axelrod aka Adolph Hitler of Chicago maybe planning/plotting against Romney but he doesn't need to do so versus the Rickster......all he/Democrats need to do in that case is to unleash Elinor Smeal, Nancy Pilosi and the NOW crowd yelling about how the Rickster wants to have government take away their birth control pills. WAKE UP FOOLS [and see what Mike Reagan, Wayne Root and Dick Armey are rightfully proclaiming] !!!!!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 2:41PM

Dai, FYI Mike Reagan above said, '....There is no road for Santorum or Gingrich to the White House, not even a dirt road. That is unfortunate. But now the primary has turned into a "Stop Romney" campaign and that's much more than unfortunate. It's destructive. And it only helps Obama.....' Now is he a conservative [and was his father one] or do you people consider them Obama-like as well??????????????

The following is WHAT WAS ACTUALLY SAID! How dare this labor union bedmate to stoop to that low level! Anyone who takes political money from a labor union is 100% a Democrat, and that is what Santorum. Whether or not Romney will govern as president in a conservative fashion will be determined by the surrounding Republican conservatives in congress, but at least he doesn't kiss up to labor unions like Santorum does and has:

'....Santorum: Keep Obama, No President Romney! Friday, March 23, 2012 09:43 AM
By: Newsmax Wires. President Barack Obama serving a second term would be preferable to Mitt Romney winning the presidency, because the two are not all that politically different, according to rival Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum.“You win by giving people a choice,” Santorum said, according to Fox News. “You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there.“If they’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future,” he said during a campaign stop in Texas.Santorum was referencing Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom’s comment Wednesday that likened the former Massachusetts governor to an Etch A Sketch, suggesting he could change his political stances come November.“It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch,” Fehrnstrom said on CNN. “You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.”Presidential contender Newt Gingrich took exception with Santorum’s remarks, tweeting, “Rick Santorum is dead wrong. Any GOP nominee will be better than Obama.”
During a speech to employees of USAA, a San Antonio-based insurance and financial services firm, Santorum briefly held up an Etch A Sketch and said his positions don't change like etchings on the toy, which are erased with a shake. He could be seen fiddling with the toy's knobs in the intervals between questions from audience members. Addressing reporters afterward, Santorum lit into Romney for saying "I'm going to run as a conservative.""He didn't say 'I am a conservative.' He said 'I'm going to run as a conservative.' So what do you do, you just sort of decide what you're going to be for the elections?" Santorum asked. "No one can accuse me of that. People say, 'Well, you can't win because of that.' No, I will win because of it."Santorum said his brand of political authenticity will play well in Texas because "people are looking for someone who is real, someone they can relate to, not someone who can get in front of an audience and say whatever they want."The Texas primary has been pushed to May 29 because of litigation over redistricting maps drawn by the Republican-dominated state Legislature. Santorum said he expects to win Saturday's primary in Louisiana and added, "The race will not be over when Texas comes around.""You'll have the opportunity here, in the state of Texas, to speak very loudly about what kind of leader you want in this country," he said.Santorum said he speaks with Texas Gov. Rick Perry before scheduled campaign stops in the state. Perry sought the GOP nomination but left the race in January and endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich."This is an important state for us," Santorum said. "I've already spent a lot of time, I've already done a lot of campaign events in Texas. More than anybody else, I suspect."......

Dai Alanye | 3.23.12 @ 1:34PM

Romney lies in every robocall he makes prior to primary elections. Depending on whom he sees as the immediate threat, the lies are aimed at Santorum or Gingrich, and would be aimed at RonPaul if the elfin one were ever to challenge effectively.

In Ohio I received more than thirty recorded calls from Mitt and the Mittani, of which approximately two dozen were distortions of Santorum's record, and the balance endorsements from various moderates and losers. There can be no rational objection to Santorum replying in kind, especially when his charges stick closer to the truth than do Romney's.

No rational person should doubt that Romney is faking his conversion to conservatism, and no realistic person will be surprised when, if nominated, Mitt switches to moderate at the speed of sound.

The Olde Breaker-of-Wind should try to keep his indignation in check, based as it is upon a fairytale Mitt who doesn't exist in the real world.

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 2:32PM

Dai, it's not 'indignation' but simply FACING THE TRUTH! See Mike Reagan's editorial here that says the same thing. You people ignorantly claiming Santorum the Conservative need to wake up and smell the roses. Conservatives in my book are ANTI-LABOR UNION AND PRO-BUSINESS. Santroum has been in bed with labor unions his whole professional life as a congressman in Pennsylvania. Hey that's kinda similar to let's see now......BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA maybe? Just because someone knocks up their wife due to religious reasons and brings forth 7-8 tax deductions into the world does not make them CONSERVATIVE!!!!!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 3.23.12 @ 2:43PM

Again, Mike R said "....There is no road for Santorum or Gingrich to the White House, not even a dirt road. That is unfortunate. But now the primary has turned into a "Stop Romney" campaign and that's much more than unfortunate. It's destructive. And it only helps Obama...."!!!!!!!!!!!

Simon Templar| 3.23.12 @ 3:37PM

I hate to break this to you but this is how it started on the first day. The tragedy is the defeat of the base by its own elitist leadership and the sycophants in the media. That is the unfortunate. The election is already lost, they never had or will ever have any intention of nominating a conservative. Nor are they out to really win this..

You can not or will not see this?

Tom| 3.23.12 @ 4:57PM

The real tragedy of this election is the total capitulation of the so-called conservative movement to the liberal Republican establishment that true conservatives have fought for over half a century.

Simon Templar| 3.23.12 @ 3:32PM

Perhaps the whole story might help.
Gee, political sarcasm to make a point? Wow.
I seem to see that every day among these bloggers including myself but then when Santorum employs it everyone seems to go brain dead and have a hissy fit.

Santorum emphasized Friday that he will support whoever wins the Republican primary. On Thursday, Santorum argued that Romney and Obama are so similar on the issues that Republicans might just as well vote to give the president a second term instead of casting their ballots for Romney.

"I would never vote for Barack Obama over any Republican and to suggest otherwise is preposterous. This is just another attempt by the Romney Campaign to distort and distract the media and voters from the unshakeable fact that many of Romney's policies mirror Barack Obama's," Santorum said.

"I was simply making the point that there is a huge enthusiasm gap around Mitt Romney and it's easy to see why - Romney has sided with Obama on healthcare mandates, cap-and-trade, and the Wall Street bailouts. Voters have to be excited enough to actually go vote, and my campaign's movement to restore freedom is exciting this nation.

"If this election is about Obama versus the Obama-Lite candidate, we have a tough time rallying this nation. It's time for bold vision, bold reforms and bold contrasts. This election is about more than Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, or Rick Santorum - this campaign is about freedom and I will fight to restore your freedoms."

I think we need to stop acting like little prima donnas. He has made a damn good point, stop focusing on the GD spin!

Cpm| 3.23.12 @ 4:35PM

Thank you for the 1000 word explanation, but all anybody heard is "if I can't be the nominee, go ahead and vote for Obama."

Tom| 3.23.12 @ 4:55PM

Rick Santorum is one of the few who have kept their personal integrity during this campaign. As for Romney and personal integrity, that is a foreign concept to him, because Mr. Electability never had personal integrity.

And I couldn't agree more with Santorum's comments about Romney and Obama.

Paul McGrath| 3.23.12 @ 5:12PM

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Romney is no Bush. No, he's no Reagan either, but he will be twenty times better than Bush, and, most importantly, he WILL beat Obama.

Santorum, on the other hand, keeps getting ensnared in liberal traps. Perception means a lot in politics, and a lot of people out there who don't pay attention think of Santorum as some kind of holy-roller, damn-'em to hell, religious nut. He MUST stay on point--the economy, debt, government intervention in our lives--and he can't.

I am frankly fed up with this guy.

Molly| 3.23.12 @ 6:38PM

Santorum is right that Romney is Obama lite and there is little difference between the two. I believe it would give people a reason to not vote because the logic would be "why bother". Sometimes people take the easy path. Frankly, people are completely blowing this way out of proportion - IMO. I have heard similar words from others (including Soros) and no one said boo about it.

I plan to vote for the republican nominee regardless, but I am sad it is Romney! We blew a chance to get a real conservative in office.... At least Mitt loves America(today)....
