The Spectacle Blog

As French commandos closed in on Mohamed Merah, he said he wanted to die “like a Mujihadeen.” Merah got his wish as he engaged in a gun battle which saw him fall to the ground from a balcony. So Merah will be greeted by 72 virgins. Or is that 72 raisins? Whatever awaits Merah, seven people who wanted to live are dead at his hands.

French authorities wanted to take Merah alive for obvious reasons. Was he working with others and if so what information did he have about them? How extensive is their network? Are their other plots being planned at this very moment? How are these plots these organized and financed? Of course, that information will have to come from other sources and by then more innocent people will have been killed.

President Obama has said we are not at war with Islam. But Islam, or at the very least a critical mass of it, is at war with us and by us, I mean Western civilization. Like all acts of violence motivated by Islamic fundamentalism, whether on a small scale or a large scale, this act was intended to paralyze people with terror and wonder when the next attack will take place.

Although Islamic fundamentalists who use violence want to terrorize the general population into submission with the random nature of their attacks, it is clear there are certain people who are the focus of their attention. As the shootings in France demonstrate much of the focus is on a) the military and b) Jews.

After all, this is not the first attack of this sort against military personnel as the 2009 shootings at Fort Hood, the two U.S. airmen shot and killed outside Frankfurt Airport last year and the soldier shot and killed in 2009 outside the military recruitment center in Arkansas demonstrate. Nor is it the first time Jews have been singled out for a portion of an attack as was the case at the Chabad-Lubavitch House during the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India in 2008.

The longer we insist on denying this, the longer it will take to vanquish this evil and the ideology which brought it about.

Will Obama condemn the attacks? Or will he stay silent and lead from behind?

Quartermaster| 3.22.12 @ 7:13PM

Obama will say little, unless it's to blame whitey.

We may not be at war with Islam, but Islam is at war with us. Obama, and idiots like him on both sides of the Aisle, can't bring themselves to acknowledge the facts.

News Flash. We are not Israel.

Israel is that Ethnocracy where only Jews are welcome. America welcomes all. Jews and Muslims too.

Another liberal troll lie. Israel has a very diverse society, Arabs are represented in their government, people of many faiths live there, as well as races. Compared to the rest of the middle east it is incredibly diverse. Shut up and roll back to the Huff and Puff. News Flash, your moniker is not terribly original or amuzing.

Ronald Reagan,
"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.

Now, I can’t say that I will agree with all the things that the present group who call themselves Libertarians in the sense of a party say, because I think that like in any political movement there are shades, and there are libertarians who are almost over at the point of wanting no government at all or anarchy. I believe there are legitimate government functions. There is a legitimate need in an orderly society for some government to maintain freedom or we will have tyranny by individuals. The strongest man on the block will run the neighborhood. We have government to insure that we don’t each one of us have to carry a club to defend ourselves. But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are traveling the same path."

Correction - Islam is not at war Western civilization. It is at war with those countries, Israel, US, France, England, who send troops to Muslim countries or individuals who make fun of Mohammed. How many terror attacks have their been in Switzerland? Finland? Hungary? Austria? Greece, the birthplace of Western Civ? I am all for killing the terrorists, but Tel Aviv Aaron is clueless about why they commit acts of terror.

LiveFreeOrDie| 3.22.12 @ 2:45PM

Just so I'm following you, it's your position that if our troops never set foot on "muslim" soil and nobody made fun of the false prophet there would be no terrorist attacks?

Zombie Reagan| 3.22.12 @ 3:50PM

That's not my position. That is the undeniable truth. Before the CIA's coup that put the puppet Shah in power, there had not been one terror attack on the US since the days of the Barbary pirates. I know some idiot will say the 'Moro Rebellion,' but that was a rebellion responding to American Imperialism, not a terror attack.

Simon Templar| 3.22.12 @ 4:10PM

You are an incredibly ignorant and arrogant liberal troll. The twentieth century has been marked with anti-semitism and radical muslim ideology through out its entirety. Hitler actually coined the name of Iran, asshole. It is farsi for Aryan. This country and others were part of the axis alliance and cooperated and supported them. Their intention was destroy all Jews. There were incidents of violent aggression from radical muslim groups throughout the twentieth century particularly during the first world war. Jihad has never gone away nor the desire for world domination that is built right into this fanatical religion. They have been slowly taking over the whole mideast not only with violence, intimidation, and population growth for nearly a century. Lebanon is a prime example, once the 'paris of the middle east', a christian nation, a democracy.

By the way that puppet was disposed of by one of the most liberal presidents of this century, with his blessing and direction, which led to an even greater dictatorship and threat.

Zombie Reagan| 3.22.12 @ 4:23PM

You are right. Muslims are old hands at killing imperialists. By the way, i seem to recall some Israeli terrorist groups commiting acts of terror against the British. Funny, you didn't know about that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K.....el_bombing

There will be terrorism and war as long as we meddle in the Middle East.

Simon Templar| 3.22.12 @ 4:43PM

That a pretty pathetic and weak response. That is all you got, liberal boy? Muslims are old hands at killing imperialist? We were not discussing terrorist tactics nor the use of them by every single group in this world. We were discussing your ignorant claims that Israel is not diverse, radical Islam is not in a fight for world domination and with the West, and your idiotic analogy of your neighbors and the muslims in France. I was not speaking of the terrorism against the british in palestine. You made that assumption.

You know, you give free speech a bad name. I find these liberal troll feedings quite tedious, unrewarding, and extremely boring.

The only reason I reply is to correct the lies, misinformation, and slander from your liberal trap on the chance that uniformed might stop here and believe that you represent conservativism or that your liberal claims have any merit.

Just wanted you to know that I could give a rats ass what you think or am attempting to pursuade your liberal trap, you call a mind. That is definitely hopeless. It is really not about you.

Zombie Reagan| 3.22.12 @ 4:46PM

frisbee| 3.22.12 @ 4:21PM

So the moslems invaded Spain in the 7th century because of which American foreign policy?

Jack in Wi.| 3.22.12 @ 6:26PM

When the Muslims invaded Sapin in the 7th century Their North African Jewish allies were riding right beside them. They were all welcomed by the native Spanish Jewish community. For 700 years the Jews of Spain were the middle men for their Muslim allies in the ruling and persecution of the Christians. Why the hell do you think Ferdinaand and Isabella gave the Jews and Muslims of Spain the option of converting or leaving with their property peacefully? They had had enough of both groups.

JmsA| 3.22.12 @ 11:41PM

While your retelling of the history of the "Reconquista" history is partly right insofar as mercenary Jewish activity in Spain, the Jews also allied themselves to some Christian Spanish princes. That said, your point is hardly germane or in context to present day Israel, unless, of course, you're not partial to the jews. If that's your choice, so be it, but I, for one, and although not Jewish, but of Spanish descent, believe Spain ultimately the poorer for expulsing the Jews from the peninsula during "La limpieza de la Sangre" (Cleansing of the Blood)--but not the oppressive Muslims.

Jack in Wi.| 3.23.12 @ 1:41AM

A large number of Spanish Jews did convert either before or after the expulsion order. I don't think Spain would have ever been a world power or spread it's culture all over the world if it had let the Muslims and Jews continue to really keep the country in turmoil. Look at what both groups are doing in this country. In fact eveywhere they inhabit the West, in large numbers, they are both a pile of trouble.

Jack in Wi.| 3.22.12 @ 4:58PM

The Israeli terrorists kill innocent Muslim children all over their neighborhood. Sometimes a Muslim kills some innocent Jewish, or on occasion Christian children. A pox on both their houses. I haven't seen much discussion here about the monster who guned down almost a dozen muslim children in Afganistan last week. To me as a Christian the blood of any child is blessed in the eyes of God, be they Jew, Muslim, Christian, or most of all innocent babies in the womb.

Occam's Tool| 3.22.12 @ 5:22PM

Right, Jack. You are full of shit, you do know that. ALL You do is try to get Jewish kids killed, you scumbag.

Simon Templar| 3.22.12 @ 5:30PM

jackboot,

That monster was a US soldier who by all accounts has become mentally disturbed by several brutal tours of this region and is ill. He does not represent the US Army, its valor, its decency, and its intentions. He represents the result of the abuse of some of our politicians, their politicization of war, their cowardice, their lack of leadership, and their exploitation.

I am getting really sick of your phony, contradictory, and manipulative rhetoric and misinformation. The state of Israel does not engage in routine and organized terrorist activities nor is this a common occurence or practice as it is with the Palestinians.

The really odd thing is three fourths of the lies and garbage you spew is unnecessary to make the point that it might be more advantageous to the US to proceed with caution, not nation build over there, and disentangle its strange relationship with Saudi Arabia, and limit its financing of these conflicts particularly on the Palestinian side.
What do you do? You come out here daily spewing this misinformation, demonizing Israel, historically revising, making false claims, making false equivelencies, and telling us about how much you care for life.

Jack in Wi.| 3.22.12 @ 6:12PM

Baloney: Jewish terrorists have been killing innocent Mulism and Christian Arab children since Israel's founding. I say a pox on all killers of children including all abortionists, the worst killers of all
.
Those who live by the Sword will die by the sword. The two biggest callers for genocide on this site, Occam and Simon Templar are now upset that some innocent children and others are killed by a crazed Muslim extremist. Switzerland (from Free Republic): 1969

Feb. 18 - Boeing 707 attacked at Zurich, Switzerland, killing the pilot and 3 passengers.

Aug. 29 - TWA 707 hijacked from Rome to Damascus, released with only wounded.

Nov. 27- EL AL office in Athens, Greece attacked. Innocent bystanders killed.

1970

Feb. 21 - Swiss airliner blown up over Switzerland, killing all 47 people on board.

I didn't bother to go further---but blocking the minarets will be a problem.

Hungary had a long history of being attacked by Islam. Hint, dumbass: when Vienna was attacked in 1683, where was one of the countries that the Sultan's armies went through on the way? And, in 1683, where was Israel and the US? There are also current attacks as well: Budapest 1991, for example.

These things don't get reported because only the most ferocious of assaults by Tasmanian devils get reported, idiot.

PCC| 3.22.12 @ 2:24PM

The European Jewish/Zionist organizations that promote Islamic immigration into Western countries should certainly be taken to task-- Mr. Goldstein continues to not mention this salient fact.

Jack in Wi.| 3.22.12 @ 4:46PM

Bowen most Jewish organizations have promoted diversity as the answer to the fact that Jews would be one of many groups and not stand out so much. Of course diversity of race and religions is great for us, but not for them in Israel.

C Bowen | 3.22.12 @ 4:55PM

My guess is we are both familiar on how it works--I am focusing my criticism on the sloppy effort from Mr. Goldstein.

Mr. Goldstein says we are at war with Islam yet the other day on this subject he cited the head of the European Jewish Congress, Moshe Kantor, with a dishonest method.

Mr. Goldstein should rather, in the context of his position, be calling Kantor a traitor or at least an enemy of the people.

His failure to do so underscores your point.

Good riddance Wahhabist scumbag. I am no fan of the zionists and/or Israel but children should never be targets and the Wahhabists are my enemy and always will be. I will never forget Beslan. Wahhabists have no tolerance for anyone but themselves (including their fellow Muslims who disagree with their rigid interpretation of the Koran). They are like a virus and the more of them that are dispatched to the next world the better. Why don't you see that two peoples may have common interests? I fail to see how the Israeli problem with the Palestinians and the Russian problem with the Kazakhs and Chechens are different. You do, for some reason. Makes no sense.

Dmitry Aleksandrovich | 3.23.12 @ 2:57AM

Russians don't have any problems with Kazakhs. Kazakhs have Kazakhstan. Russians have Russia and in both countries you can find significant numbers of both people. As for Chechens as of right now those running Chechnya are friends of Moscow. There is a problem with Wahhabist scum and Israel has a problem with Wahhabists as well. My problem with Israel has nothing to do with Jews in particular and everything to do with for lack of a better term the "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians (both Christian and Muslim) that took place during the birth of the zionist state. I have no hatred for Jews and I think that its a tragedy when children be they Israeli or Palestinian are killed.

Simon Templar| 3.22.12 @ 11:56PM

You continue to quote this and take it out of context as some kind of proof that modern libertarians are conservatives and that Reagan was saying that modern libertarians represent the liberarianism as defined in the 18th century.

It is really a laughable interpretation. You have a very weak mind, not much ability to form your own opinions, can not communicate with the lame exception of continual quotation from other thinkers and authors, and seem to have a childish predisposition for name calling.

Now, for those that truly want to understand this qoute read it carefully.

Reagan begins by stating that the modern terms use to describe conservativism, liberalism, and libertarianism today are misnomers...ill fitting and actually misleading. What he is saying is today's conservatives are philosophically closer to being more accurately described as 18 CENTURY LIBERTARIANS as they called themselves then, NOT those that are calling themselves libertarians today. He underscores this by stating that todays libertarians are all over the map, conflict with many of his own values, and take positions on national security, the rule of law and order, and the boundaries of individual freedom that he thinks go too far.

He states however that the 18th CENTURY libertarian idea of limited government is consistent with todays concept of conservativism and is a PRETTY GENERAL DESCRIPTION of the basis of conservativism. And on that point and that point specifically he is saying that modern conservativism and 18th century libertarianism are traveling the same path.

Question....Was anyone else faintly amused at the attempt of the French government to imply the French police had nothing to do with the death of Mohammed Merah?
Of course without knowing the geometry of the apartment nor having a video of the raid, it is pure speculation as to what happened.

If the French police are anything like the American SWAT teams, anyone who comes out of a bathroom firing at the police is going out the window riddled with bullets.
Reportedly 300 shots were fired by the police in a matter of seconds.

The really interesting speculation is why the French government is scared of the Muslims.
Is it fear of retribution, the families wrongful death lawsuit, Muslim Lawfare or some really nasty letters to the French Newspapers?
Feel free to speculate.

albert constantine jr.| 3.22.12 @ 9:26PM

During the 1970s, there was a series of homicides in San Francisco known as the “Zebra” killings. According to one of the accounts published, a faction of what was then known as “Black Muslims” decided that they could earn points toward jihad if they killed white infidels. Maximum points were awarded if the shooter killed a child, next was a female, and lastly an adult male.

There were some who noted that since the highest pointage was awarded for those who could provide the least defense for themselves, this was a sign of the true cowardice of the killers. In that his last victims were also children, the late Mohammed Merah would seem to share this preference with his earlier homicidal co-religionists.

This seems to be offset, though, but the fact that several of his other victims were soldiers, who arguably are trained to respond to threats to life. I imagine, though, that like most members of the American military stateside (as well as those in the combat zone if Leon Panetta is visiting), these soldiers were reliably disarmed prior to leaving the confines of their base.

At that point, though likely well-regulated, they ceased being even a “militia”, and became instead victims. While there certainly are many hazards associated with large volumes of individuals possessing sidearms, the likelihood that Abdul Hassan or Mohammed Merah would have killed as many as they did in the presence of more armed soldiers is quite low.

Likewise, those who administer Hebrew Schools and the congregations of synagogues would do well to consider their security needs, as well.

For the time being, because even if only 1% of French muslims behave like terrorists (according to the imam of Paris) this could be misleading as 1% of 12 million (by serious estimates because the actual number is kept top secret and it is illegal to disclose it!) still makes about 120,000 other islamo nazi beasts like "Momo" Merah hiding in plain view in our "occupied territories". Monsieur Dixie, our crooks in chief are afraid of muslims because they're a bunch of corrupt wimp who pander to the muslims out of political correctness.
