It’s not final, so I hold out hope the deal will fall through. But there’s a better than even chance that Tim Tebow will be playing football next year in New Yawk, where he will fit in like a tarantula fits on top of a wedding cake.

The orthodox, Christian traditionalist Tebow would be subject to record culture shock as he tries to fit into the ultra-liberal, secularist, land of fughetaboutit and bada bing! If the Jets deal goes through, Tebow will go from the melting pot of Denver to the pressure cooker of New York.

Tebow’s performance last year earned him a spot as a starter. But the Jets have just signed Mark Sanchez to a five-year, $68.5 million deal. So which of these two starters starts? The theory is  that Tebow would be a “package player” whose number will be called when a running offense is needed. This is no way for a very talented Tebow to fill out the rest of his game, or for Mark Sanchez to have any piece of mind to go with the millions he will be paid.

I hope Tebow goes elsewhere — St. Louis or one of the Florida teams would be a better fit — both for his sake and so that I can continue to pull for him. As a Son of the South I’ve never been able to pull for a New York team, not even for the Jets when their quarterback was Broadway Joe. I consider any baseball season a success if the Yankees don’t make it to the World Series. This may have about it the stink of small ambition. But it’s a habit of a lifetime and I’m helpless before it.

It’s probably time for Tebow’s co-religionists to pray for him. A very nice and very talented young man is in danger of becoming, to slightly revise novelist Robert Heinlein, a stranger in an even stranger land.

Larry,

Judging from your comments, I am sure that you would enjoy "The Official New York Yankees Hater's Handbook" by William Mead. It has a lot of laughs, all at the expense of the Yankees.

I agree about Tebow. It doesn't look like a good situation for him, particularly based on Mark Sanchez's new contract. But Mr. Tebow should never be underestimated. He maintains his character and finds a way to win.

Terrible trade.

You're right; Tebow doesn't belong on the New York team (Jets) or city.

I personally hope the trade falls through.

I also think Denver made a huge mistake betting so much on Manning. What do they think they know that the Colts didn't?

LiveFreeOrDie| 3.22.12 @ 10:43AM

Who will be the starting QB in Denver when Manning can't play? When asked about his neck he said his doctors and trainers were encouraged by his progress. In other words, "My injury is not healed. If the season started today I would not be able to play. I'm not confident enough to say I will be ready in time for the season."

Don't get me wrong the guy has 96 million reasons to take the field but "encouraged" isn't very convincing.

Jacksonville is where he should go. The Jets would be making a mistake if they took Tebow. They already have a good young QB, why do they need Tebow? The Jaguars are a better fit.

The American Hitman| 3.21.12 @ 9:30PM

Yeah, I think Tebow would find Beirut a friendlier environment than the Joisey Jets.

The late George Allen took over as coach of the Washington Redskins and said 'the future is now'. They got to Super Bowl VII and lost. The Broncos apparently are trying the same thing- betting it all on an aging QB. It will fail.

PS- Manning has a 9-10 post season record. If he was gonna win a bunch of Super Bowls, he'd a one 'em by now.

ESPN, I believe, mentioned that after the first attempt, Mr. Tebow was offered to be dealt to either Jacksonville or NY.

He went to NY instead of Florida on his own accord. Perhaps he feels NY is in more need of the Gospel?

Richard| 3.22.12 @ 9:35AM

Tebow should play for a college team. Those are the only offences he appears to understand.

Well, there's a reason Jonah got sent to Nineveh instead of somewhere more congenial. Now's the time to find out just how "diverse" New York can handle being.

Speaking as

1) A native New Yorker now living in Texas
2) A Catholic Republican
3) A Giants fan
4) A guy who LIKES Tim Tebow, but just doesn't think he's a very good quarterback...

My take is, while it may seem counterintuitive, New York may be a GREAT place for Tim Tebow. Much better than Sun Belt cities where he'd be welcomed with enthusiasm.

In Sun Belt cities, there'd be millions of born again Christian fans eager to hand him the starting quarterback job. In Jacksonville, fans would be pressuring the coach to put Tebow in the first time the starting quarterback threw an incompletion.

It won't be like that in New York. Sure, Jets fans will WANT him to succeed, but they will NOT give him the benefit of their doubt. In New York, Tebow will be used in specific packages the coaches want to run- packages that will exploit his genuine athletic gifts. But he probably won't start a single game at quarterback, and DEFINITELY won't start at quarterback until he PROVES on the practice field that he can make NFL throws consistently and run an NFL offense.

If Tim Tebow wants to play quarterback in New York, he'll have to earn the opportunity. If he wants the fans in his corner, he'll have to win them over with his play on the field.

Which is exactly as it should be.

Ken (Old Texican)| 3.22.12 @ 11:47AM

Larry,
Tim will do just fine where ever he goes.

All you idiots forget that Terry Bradshaw took FIVE YEARS to get up to speed. Uh how many superbowl rings does HE have?

Bob Miller| 3.22.12 @ 12:03PM

Broadway Tim (Jersey Tim?) will find a Jet fan base with few positive expectations about him or the team as a whole. So whatever he does right will win acclaim. If he wants to live among religious or political conservatives, Staten Island or various Jersey towns would do just fine.
