The Spectacle Blog

A day after officially signing Peyton Manning, the Denver Broncos have traded quarterback Tim Tebow to the New York Jets for a fourth round draft pick.

Wow! The Broncos practically gave Tebow away.

So now what are the Jets going to do with Mark Sanchez who is signed with the Jets through 2016? After coming within a heartbeat of getting to the Super Bowl in 2010, Sanchez and the Jets were grounded in 2011 missing the playoffs. Will there be a QB competition or are the Jets going to give Sanchez his walking papers? If it’s the latter how is Tebow going to fit with Rex Ryan and company? A saint amongst sinners?

If nothing else, it will get the New York papers to talk about the Jets instead of the defending Super Bowl champion Giants.

The Jets have a history going back to Ray Lucas and more recently Brad Smith of liking to have a second QB who can play other positions and run what they call their Wildcat formation. I expect that is what Tebow will be doing, at least until he develops some more conventional QB skills. The Jets may also appreciate having a player that they don’t need to worry about showing up on a police report.

As a pure football move this makes sense, but it's going to create one hell of a media firestorm.

Sanchez had better cut the rolling around in the sack with Kate Upton, and focus on figuring out defenses, and making the right reads!

I would like to know why you, AG, are so enamored and obsessed with this continued focus on Tebow and his prospects. Why all the articles? Perhaps taking some glee in a vocal christian, expressing his first ammendment rights, getting put down and slighted?

Maybe you and Kaminsky can get together and celebrate.

Aaron Goldstein| 3.21.12 @ 3:04PM

Uh, Simon, I am hardly the only one here who has been writing about Tebow over the past several days. Both Jim Antle and Larry Thornberry have also written blog posts once the Broncos acquired Peyton Manning.

As for my posts about Tebow, I defy you to find any evidence to support your contention that I am "taking glee in a vocal christian, expressing his first amendment rights, getting put down and slighted."

I think Tim Tebow is great for the NFL and great for America. Frankly, the Broncos made a mistake in signing Manning and will rue the day they traded Tebow. This is not John Elway's finest hour.

And what does Ross Kaminsky have to do with any of it? As far as I know, he hasn't expressed an opinion on Tebow one way or the other. Although Kaminsky lives in Colorado so I'm sure he has a thought or two on the subject.

But why would Kaminsky and I celebrate getting together and celebrate Tim Tebow being slighted and put down? Do you dislike our last names?

Simon, I've been reading your posts for a long time & don't know HOW in the hell you arrived at the conclusion you did. I've never read a bad article about Tebow from either one of the men you've mentioned.

Aaron Goldstein was a card carrying member of the socialist New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP). Since 09/11, Aaron has reconsidered his ideological inclinations and has become a Republican. Apparently, one that leans heavily Left and is preoocupied with making damn sure no social conservative is ever elected to any office. He is a big proponent of gay marriage and making damn sure religious points of view (christian) are kept out of public discussion. He has not a clue about the culture war being waged by the Left to destroy the essential foundations of this Republic and in fact is assisting the effort. He has slammed Rush Limbaugh as well several years ago on the black quarterback story and was all for him being screwed out of the purchase of the sports team.

Aaron has been slamming social conservatives and Santorum since 2003. If you would like to read some of his less tempered opinions than the ones he post out here on a whole range of issues then you can find them on......

This is what is called grasping at straws.

Except you still haven't produced a shred of evidence to support your contention that I have been, as you put it, "taking some glee in a vocal christian (Tim Tebow), expressing his first ammendment rights, getting put down and slighted." So you put up a smokescreen.

Your assertion that I was all for Rush Limbaugh "being screwed out of the purchase" of the St. Louis Rams is baseless. Here is how I began the article in question:

"Heaven forbid Rush should pursue happiness and use his hard earned money to become a minority owner of an NFL franchise. The liberal media shamelessly accused him of supporting slavery by using statements they either knew to be false or simply didn’t bother exercising due diligence to verify their veracity.

I’m not sure who should be more ashamed. The liberal media or St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts, the man who asked Limbaugh to become part of his bid to purchase the St. Louis Rams, for caving in instead of coming to Rush’s defense.

Rush should explore every legal avenue available to him to seek recompense from those in the liberal media who bore false witness against him and against Checketts for breach of contract."

You're making this way too easy for me, Simon.

Gave away Tebow? That is the same price the Patriots paid for Randy Moss, who went on to catch 60 touchdowns. They gave up Drew Bledsoe to a division rival for a 3rd round pick. Plus the Broncos wanted to make things easy for Tebow.

Pete| 3.21.12 @ 11:25PM

Tebow was a 1st round pick.

Oldefarte| 3.21.12 @ 5:07PM

This all extends Forrest Gump's brilliance in that STUPID IS AS SUTPID DOES! Denver and Elway will rue the day of letting Tim T get away. Manning at 36 with a bad neck maybe made the best deal of the century monetarily speaking. Tim T simply needs a experienced QB coach to spend quality time converting his personae to the NFL game of being a pocket passer/occassional running QB aka Tarkenton [and yes Elway]. The DA Elway couldn't or wouldn't work with Tim for the betterment of the Bronks as their VP? What a DA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete| 3.21.12 @ 11:24PM

Looks like the Packers will get more for losing Flynn in free agency than the Broncos get for trading Tebow. And Flynn was a 7th rounder while Tebow was a 1st rounder. Elway obviously had little regard for Tebow.

Ross Kaminsky | 3.22.12 @ 5:32PM

My thoughts:

Tebow does seem to have gone somewhat cheaply, for a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick and $2.5 million.

But that says a lot about what the rest of the league really thinks of the guy's long-term prospects in the NFL.

It was impossible to live in Colorado and not enjoy the Tebow-mania, being swept up in his remarkable 4th quarter comebacks, and incredible playoff win in Pittsburgh.

So while I was a fan, to a degree, I am not convinced that he will be a long-term success in the NFL. Running quarterbacks don't have a very long life expectancy, though there have been some notable exceptions such as Randall Cunningham and Michael Vick.

What is more surprising to me than the low price for Tebow is that he went to NYC. First, he doesn't seem well suited to NYC as a person. Second, they have a starting quarterback (who I don't think is very good, but who they just signed a contract with.) So Tebow is unlikely to be a starter there, instead being a role player when they want to run an option play, or on the goal line, etc. I think Sanchez and Tebow will both come to hate it.

Pete is right that Elway never seemed to be a big fan of Tebow's as a player, though he did say he was the sort of guy who Elway would like to see marry his daughter.

I'm a much bigger fan of Tebow as a person than as a player, despite the excitement he brought to Denver last year. I wish him the best in life and in his career, though I have a feeling the latter won't be as good as the former.

And I'm hoping the Broncos didn't just spend over $90 million on a quarterback too old or injured to recover most of his past greatness.

Ty Schroeder| 3.22.12 @ 9:18PM

I like the move to NY for Tim. After all jesus hung out with the lepers, the poor, the hooligans , and the down-trodden. You know, exactly like NY Jets fans.
