Public Policy Polling, a Democratic outfit, nevertheless has been the most accurate gauge so far of GOP contests. This, therefore, is interesting: Head to head, without Gingrich in the race, Santorum wins 41-40 nationally among Republicans. Santorum gets 48 percent of Gingrich’s remaining support; Romney gets 33 percent.

And yet, people still think Romney is the only electable candidate. I cannot believe after the whole McCain fiasco from 2008 that Republicans still think a moderate is the best they can do. All of these candidates have their faults, but to me Romney is nothing more than Obama-lite. I want a candidate that will bring back America not compromise it away. I am so disillusioned with this whole race. So we get a candidate that only wins by destroying the other guys - another trait he shares with Obama. Not even sure it is worth holding my nose over this time, but I probably will.

Its crony capitalism of the GOP variety.

Much of Mitt's support has come from a series of myths. The main one, of course, is that he's conservative. Some Repubs manage to believe this by squinting their eyes and swallowing hard.

Another is that he's the inevitable winner, and his endorsers intend to keep saying this until it comes true, even if it takes another four years.

I like the one that claims he can fix the economy because he's a "businessman." But I've known more than a few men and women in business, and I'm not too impressed with the argument. Besides, Mitt is no businessman as the term usually applies -- he's a financier. You know, one of those Wall Street money guys.

But the greatest weakness of Romney is no myth. He's a poor in-person campaigner, primarily depending on buying endorsements and swamping his opponents by the liberal use of dishonest ads and robocalls. That won't work come November.

In November we'll need a strong conviction candidate to assure a win.

It ain't gonna happen since Gingrich vowed to stay in the race. Santorum can thank Arlene Specter, who helped pass Obamacare.

In a hypothetical matchup, without negative advertising, where organization and media coverage don't mean anything, where the candidate can't blow himself up by prattling on about JFK and 1960, apparently there exists a poll that suggests that Santorum would edge Romney.

In the real world however, such as Michigan, Ohio, and now Illinois, Santorum gets trounced.

Carnival Barker| 3.21.12 @ 11:31AM

The real moderates in the race are Gingrich and Santorum, i.e. moderately big government. They were both for big government before they were against it.

Santorum endorsed the biggest top down federal health care plan in existence, Plan D, yet he gets away with claiming he took one for the team.

In the meantime he's made some ricidulous comments about homosexuality that will work to make him a laughingstock in the general election.

Yet, many still believe in his inevitablity.

The only thing inevitable about Santorum is he's most likely receiving a payoff to stay in the race, or he's simply a dork who thinks he can pull it off somehow.

Either way, he's not a great candidate.

somnolence| 3.21.12 @ 11:31AM

Hmm Hmm. Sure. Cite us one poll, narrow at that, within the margin of error. Unimpressive, and it won't happen. Other polls can be found that put your premise to shame, Quinn.

This sounds about right. I was a Newt supporter at first, but as time goes on, I've seen that Santorum has a fighting spirit that I didn't know he had. I went to Santorum's rally in Arlington Heights, IL, Friday night. The gym was packed. It wasn't a pep rally. There were cheers, but there were many minutes of listening. It was a message of freedom and an understanding was created that Obama is taking away our freedom. It was no problem for me to switch from Newt to Rick yesterday.

Drek| 3.21.12 @ 2:27PM

It's not a "fighting spirit." He's on a mission from God, he's out there deluding himself he's doing the Lord's work, which is why he has trouble stifling himself when it comes to contraceptives.

He desperately needs a staffer to emulate the old Archie Bunker when he wanders frequently off the reservation and starts prattling on about, and needs to imitate Archie when dealing with his wife: "Will you STIFLE?"

SpiralArchitect| 3.21.12 @ 4:28PM

So, you went from the life boat back to the sinking ship?

A fine play.

Molly| 3.21.12 @ 12:20PM

I think Santorum has far more character and conviction than any other candidate. Yes, I understand that some of his time in the Senate was not quite as conservative as I would have liked, but we live in different times and I believe he would do some things differently. He certainly is not one to change is position depending on who he is speaking to from one minute to the next. And his conservative ranking is better than Mitts! At least he never supported cap and trade and shoved health are down anyone's throat!

Cpm| 3.21.12 @ 12:23PM

Exit polling in Illinois yesterday suggested that Gingrich voter's second place choice was evenly split between Romney and Santorum, so there is that.

Alan Brooks| 3.21.12 @ 12:41PM

You guys know of course a 41 to 40 lead by Santorum the rest of the way STILL gets Romney the nomination right?

Dai Alanye | 3.21.12 @ 5:45PM

Deep and thorough analysis by Brooks. And what does 42-39 bring? Or 43-38? Or whatever?

WL| 3.21.12 @ 2:01PM

I think Hillyer is going to be in the nomination battle after the convention...until the police have to put him in a straight jacket and haul him off to the asylum.

It's over Mr. Hillyer...I hate it too...but it's over.

As we all stop and back away slowly...

Drek| 3.21.12 @ 2:29PM

Hillyer at least saw the light at last about Jennifer Rubin.........

But the guy who is really out of it, and if he doesn't rein himself in might really lose it, has got to be THE OTHER MCCAIN.

First Cain and now Santorum! And all the while patting himself on the back for his supposed political insight!

Ken| 3.21.12 @ 2:35PM

We started off with some pretty decent candidates with only a few really bad ones for which I could never bring myself to vote. Unfortunately, the worst of these was Romney. If only he'd dropped out late last year. Instead we will likely end up with someone so bad that I'll not bother voting. I can only hope that Santorum will prevail in the end.

Cpm| 3.21.12 @ 2:41PM

If you don't vote for the nominee
I guess that makes you a RINO.

Bob K.| 3.21.12 @ 3:32PM

I watched Santorum for the n'th time on television today and I think I finally figured out his problem.

He has never mastered the technique of looking friendly on television and until he does he can't win. After all, this is basic politics. Even Romney comes across as friendly on TV.

When you see a TV shot of Santorum working a crowd on a personal one on one basis he is completely different. But he doesn't have a friendly relationship with the camera.

Reagan had it mastered. Carter never did and he started with a lead in the polls of 58-42 and blew it with his policies and schoolmarm demeanor on TV.

Clinton could do it and so could Bush the Younger and Obama also can pull it off when he has too.

SpiralArchitect| 3.21.12 @ 4:26PM

Nice observation.

Bo Darville| 3.22.12 @ 9:44AM

I agree. He talks with his eyes shut.

Minilening | 3.22.12 @ 2:57PM

You said it just like it is. Nicely put into words.

Les| 3.21.12 @ 4:06PM

Quin Hilyer=Jim Jones

SpiralArchitect| 3.21.12 @ 4:25PM

ROFL

Jones was a smooth talker though.

SpiralArchitect| 3.21.12 @ 4:31PM

Santorum could win the GOP by any factor (that means number of votes or percentage, Quinnn) over the others.

The issue with Santorum is he cannot run a successful campaign to win a general vs. President Decline (thats 0bama, Quinnn).
