Rick Santorum has won both Alabama and Mississippi. A bad night
for Mitt Romney, certainly (though he’s likely to rake in delegates
when the results from Hawaii and American Samoa come in later
tonight), but a much, much worse night for Newt Gingrich.
Gingrich’s only other wins were in South Carolina and Georgia,
remember; the Deep South was supposed to be his last, best
opportunity for a comeback. Obvious question: What possible
justification does Newt have for staying in the race? Matt Lewis
suggests that there’s “a
Machiavellian argument … that continuing to accrue
delegates would give him additional bargaining leverage going into
the Republican convention in Tampa this summer,” but concludes that
it’s a flawed and dishonorable strategy, and that Newt should drop
out. Will he? His statements tonight seem to suggest not, but that
can change fairly quickly.
BuzzFeed is already
looking back at what we’ll miss about Newt’s candidacy.

More seriously: what would he want from the convention? Is a veep pick even imaginable? From either of them?
I genuinely don't know what he wants or hopes to achieve and for what sides.
RJ| 3.14.12 @ 2:02AM
I think Ron Paul is focused on continuing his message of Constitutional government to influence as many people as he can and would like to see some changes to the GOP platform. I can't imagine that he wants the VP slot. He can easily continue in the race and has no reason to stop. Might as well go the distance. As for Rand Paul, he is working hard as a senator. I don't think he is looking for the VP slot, yet.

Pigs will fly before there is a brokered convention. Santorum even loses if Gingrich leaves.
Mender| 3.14.12 @ 12:24AM
Probably. Which to be fair may give Newt a slight reason to drop out and endorse Santorum: he's gained credibility, got himself a job on Fox News or similar, increased his income, sold some books and so on.
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is probably going to get a majority anyway so endorsing him will change nothing and leave the conservative base (where the money's to be made as a commentator) furious. And Santorum's more likely to offer him a veep choice since he might need some votes at the convention whereas Mitt would just laugh and say he'll win without Gingrich's help.
Vern Crisler| 3.14.12 @ 1:23AM
Newt should stay in and win. Santorum will not win against Obama, and he should stop taking delegates away from Newt. The only good news tonight is that this undermines the inevitability-of-Romney argument
Bob K.| 3.14.12 @ 2:10AM
I have said this before since I am from PA. I have my doubts that he can carry his old home state against Obama.
He hasn't lived here since he left the Senate and he will be reminded that he won his 1st seat in congress by pointing out to the electorate that his opponent Doug Walgren (D) who was in DC for 7 terms spent too much time in Washington DC and not enough time at home in his district.
RJ| 3.14.12 @ 2:29AM
I appreciate your view. Do you think Romney would do better? The race is very winnable without PA, but it would be great to get.
Bob K.| 3.14.12 @ 10:52AM
He might do better but I'm not sure he would win it. We have a problem with the Republican leadership elected to run the state in 2010. The Republicans won the Governorship and both house of the legislature and are still having problems redistricting the state. The governor has accepted $34 million dollars from the feds to implement Obama's health care exchanges in 2014.
http://www.kintera.org/c.6oJCL.....aid=517327
In addition there are about 1 million more registered democrats in the state than republicans. That is why this display of republican incompetence is so frustrating!
RJ| 3.14.12 @ 11:55AM
Thanks, Bob. It seems like in all relatively close Presidential elections, Pennsylvania is in the Democratic column, so I am not expecting a GOP win by any candidate. I certainly understand your frustration with the GOP. It seems we keep throwing away good opportunities. Best wishes.
Dai Alanye | 3.14.12 @ 3:01AM
It would appear that Gingrich has absolutely no chance of grabbing the brass ring.
Newt has won no state except for Georgia and the fluke in So Carolina, thrown into his lap by hanging curveballs thrown by Juan Williams and John King. He should leave while he has a few shreds of dignity remaining, and accept a position as Presidential Advisor.

You mean a Santorum - Newt ticket. They are getting 60 percent of the vote to 30 percent for Romney. Romney is fading badly.
hook| 3.14.12 @ 7:41AM
Newt appears with Pelosi on AGW and Sharpton on schools. Somehow I don't think he has super conservative credentials. Santorum is a SOCIAL conservative, and kind of a Reagan Dem in some ways even though he votes Repub. Romney would have to have a heart attack to be out of it. Santorum could be V.P. and reassure the Social Conservatives.
Does ANYONE think Obama has a chance to win Alabama or Miss? Get out Newt.
The American Hitman| 3.14.12 @ 7:55AM
As an ABR guy, so long as Santo and Newt are finishing 1-2 or 2-1, or between them collecting the majority of delegates, there is no reason for anyone to "GET OUT."
Keeping the liberal carpetbagger from buying a nomination in the primaries is the goal.

Don't worry what Newt does...It will be good for the country no matter what! Trust him...the man has HONOR and loves this country...he will help it , you can be sure of that, no one has better analytic and political skills....It is not in his DNA to not want what is best for this Nation.
I myself think he is waiting for Rick to look like a REAL winner and if last night didn't show that nothing did. The greatness was in the HUMILITY he showed in the TWO wins, the JOY and honest feelings.
Newt will DO WHATS BEST FOR THE COUNTRY....trust me!
rightasrain| 3.14.12 @ 9:51AM
Newt knows no one will give him the time of day if he drops out---just ask Cain, Perry and Bachmann. Why would anyone who craves the spotlight and being able to influence the debate as much as Newt does drop out now and go back to peddling books in strip malls, especially when he can stay in on someone else's dime?
somnolence| 3.14.12 @ 10:23AM
Romney has already stated that he won't pick Santorum as a V.P. nominee.
florin| 3.14.12 @ 10:23AM
Mimi - what honor does gingrich have? Honor to his wives? He had to sign a statement saying he would never commit adultery again..a man of honor would not have to do that. A man of honor would not suck up to liberals as often as gingrich has while disdaining conservatives unless they honor him...get real!
Drek| 3.14.12 @ 10:42AM
There is NOTHING dishonourable about stopping Romney, a man without any conservative achievement to boast of, from gaining the nomination.
Whatever Newt has to do to stop Romney from gaining the number of delegates to win outright is OK for the rank and file.
We can't get a conservative candidate without driving down Romney's candidacy. And since Romney has played hardball for over half a decade, it's about time somebody played hardball with him..............
WL| 3.14.12 @ 11:16AM
I agree...However, while I like Newt...He should really do something to make it very clear that he is not trying to hijack Santorum. He doesn't have a chance at this point, to win the nomination, so if he stays in and contributes to Romney in any way (like taking votes that may have pushed Rick over the top)...then we know that he is doing the same thing as Ron Paul...
Shilling for Romney.
I don't want to think that about Newtster...but we do have to be honest with ourselves going forward.
Pete| 3.14.12 @ 12:44PM
Newt made it clear on Fox last night. He is aiming at stopping Romney. If he gets out, 30 percent of his votes go to Romney (according to Romney's own people). He is denying Romney those votes. By stopping Romney Newt and Santorum can agree to run together. Its that simple. Its really Romney people who want Newt out of the race. Watching there spin on this is interesting.

After Tuesday votes in Mississippi, Alabama, Hawaii and American Samoa:
DELEGATES WON
41 Romney
35 Santorum
24 Gingrich
1 Paul
source: ABC NEWS
JJ| 3.14.12 @ 12:42PM
Romney to get to 1144 delegates needs to carry on the average 50 percent of the delegates per each state. So he got 41 of 101 delegates leaving him short. So this was hardly a win for Romney. He is getting further rather than closer to victory.
Frank P.| 3.14.12 @ 12:40PM
Mississippi has elected some real Rino's. Look at Thad Cochran,Lott,Roger Wicker,Haley Barbour.
Surprised they didn't go for Romney.
Garfield| 3.14.12 @ 4:11PM
Drudge, CNN, and other released that Romney was ahead in the exit polls before polls closed.
My guess was it was to throw the election and knock Gingrich out, though Gingrich isn't one to give up.
