There’s a consensus coming out of the polling in Alabama and Mississippi: both states are genuine three-way races between Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich. Romney surprisingly has a real chance to win both states. Both states could also deliver victories to Santorum and Gingrich, keeping the latter’s candidacy alive and the former’s momentum going among socially conservative electorates.

Would Romney lose to either Santorum or Gingrich in a two-way race in the Deep South? Almost certainly. But even so, for Romney to be hovering around 30 percent in these states is progress for him.

I wonder if Santorum will gain any momentum from his likely victory in Kansas this weekend.

Oldefarte| 3.9.12 @ 3:53PM

IMHO these southern states results will get Gingrich back into contention hopefully!!!!!!

Simon Templar| 3.9.12 @ 4:29PM

What exactly do you base that on? Seriously. I am interested. Could you be more specific?

Oldefarte| 3.10.12 @ 4:02PM

I THINK that it's possible that Newt, if he wins Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, COULD become a player to Mitt and replace Rick as the conservative choice. It's a big IF, but if conservatives open their ears/brains to what Newt is proposing [especially regarding oil drilling/production from domestic sources] they should choose him over Santorum [who is simply a super-Catholic moralist whose one/only message is birth control and religion, which is a pathway for defeat in November]!!!!!!!

Bob| 3.11.12 @ 11:05AM

Newt really needs to organize his campaign better. Of all the candidates, he's the one who challenges the media most often. He doesn't just withstand the media onslaught, he strikes back at them, and does so convincingly instead of just in desperation. Newt needs to win those states you mentioned to get back in the race in a big way.

Simon Templar| 3.9.12 @ 4:23PM

This whole thing is really truly amazing.

There is not a three way race here nor a two race here. What there is, is a confused conservative electorate that has split its vote against each other and has been played like a violin by the GOP establishment and the MSM from the beginning.
Bohner recognizes this and now is so emboldened that he knows the outcome and knows that the conservative base is defeated and can not find its way out of this. Now, he is calling all his reps to get in line and those resisting shut up, you lost the narrative and the center of power.

Romney will continue to win by a small margin and will be nominated as I have said since the beginning this all started. He stood and will win not because he has done anything extraordinary besides spend 10 to 1 and slam with the most viscous negative campaigning, which he has already said he will not use on Obama.
The voting across this nation has made it clear that 66 percent do not want him but so what?
To get elected on such a small margin is absolutely ridiculous and don't count on the Left not to point that out this September. This race should have been paired down a long time ago, but most were more interested in playing my dog is better than your dog games. Barby Bush, their son Billy Clinton and all the progressives will score another one.

One more cyrstal ball....when he is nominated the MSM and the Left will lick their chops and be touting the idea that the Tea Party is dead, has no influence, and the base has been put in its place by the more reasoned, reasonable, moderates. They came to their senses and became leaders once more for sanity and moderation.

The only way Romney will win is by the sheer force of panic that the rest of us exhibit by becoming active, volunteering, and literally dragging people to the polls, like your friend Jack down the street that usually is uniformed and forgets to vote, your Aunt Marple who is half out of it but a nice lady and old conservative, and all the rest. Don't expect Romney to get it up for a fight, you will have to do the heavy work.

Mender| 3.10.12 @ 3:08PM

This would be completely convincing if liberals weren't desperately trying to prop Santorum up. Here's Michael Moore explaining it nice and clearly:

They know that if they can make Santorum the candidate, the whole contraception deception won't have gone to waste. If Romney gets the nomination, it's an interesting race. If Santorum gets the nomination, the radical left will pummel him harder than anyone in politics has been pummeled before, and use the contraception deception to discredit him so thoroughly that they will also be able to say conservative voters are completely uninformed and finally allow Obama to make the final power grab.

Oldefarte| 3.10.12 @ 4:10PM

ST: I'm not a partisaned supporter of any one particular candidate [and considering your truthful comments], but the whole idea should be to defeat Obama, right? IMHO this moralistic/religion drum beat for Rick Santorum is a Democrat/Axelrod generated diversion from Obama's/Democrats' devastating public policies of the last three years. They are succeeded in hiding the pea from the public of the dire economic conditions that are currently bankfupting this country. Some have opined that the US will falter way before Europe does so. The goal/target has got to be to defeat Obama/Democrats in November, not to nominate the most pure conservative chaste goodie-two-shoes candidate [aka Jimmy Carter] in order to satisfy the social conservatives' agenda!!!!!!!!!!

Bill| 3.9.12 @ 4:27PM

Gingrich must win in AL & MS, otherwise it's over.

Simon Templar| 3.9.12 @ 4:37PM

If Romney wins any of the south, it will be over for the other two. The establishment from Antle, the THIRD to Rove will declare victory over the conservative base, and it will be business as usual.

This is not rocket science....it is actually unbelievably predictable, you have the same idiot game played out every four years except for the one that got away from them in 1980.

aware| 3.10.12 @ 8:54AM

The fix was in from the start. Paul was the only real threat to the oligarchy so he was marginalized quickly through fraud and propaganda. The rest are just ringers to make Romney look like he "won" a contest.

At this critical time, with this roster of pure Statists do you still think the Republican Party is on the side of small and honest government? They will make sure the Ruling Elite is not threatened. Romney/Obama in Nov. guarantees this.

Oldefarte| 3.10.12 @ 4:18PM

ST: IMHO you can't equate prior elections with this upcoming one. This country is on the brink of economic collapse from these socialistic Democrats' policies of the last three years. Our only hope is that the taxpaying voter of this nation have finally awakened to same, or this country will die. Its that simple. If say Romney is establishment's boy but is electable and thereafter is able to turn around these socialistic governmental policies, then have we lost overall? There is no more Reagan and never will be. We've got to determine who is most capable of fixing the current excrement and [if necessary hold our collective noses in voting for same] get same elected if we are to survive. It will only be the beginning, not the end [when we can begin the process of weeding out RINOS etc over time and replacing same with true conservatives at the state and national levels----ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY]!!!!!!!!

Proud Mormon| 3.9.12 @ 5:56PM

We in the Romney camp thank our opponents for cancelling each other out giving us a chance to win in two states we thought were sure losers. Romney polls 30%? I was wrong; there are some sensible people in the South not just right-wing kooks.

Nite| 3.9.12 @ 8:38PM

The conservative base do NOT want Romney. It has nothing to do with his religion. It is due to his liberal positions. In fact, while he was MA Governor, two of Obama's current appointees worked for him. John Holdren for one and the other is the number 2 at the EPA. Both liberal Democrats. Is this what we can expect" Liberal Judges? Global Warming? Romney is trying to hide some of this right now.

Eric Dondero | 3.10.12 @ 8:54AM

Hmmn? James, you forgot to mention the fact that stidently non-interventionist/appeasement supporter Ron Paul is polling in the 3 to 4% range in MS and AL.

And that he didn't pick up a single delegate out of Guam, or even a single vote in the delegate caucus.

Might this have something to do with the fact that people in MS, AL and Guam love America and can't stand appeasement to America's enemies like Islamo-Fascists?

Just a thought??

aware| 3.10.12 @ 5:32PM

Here's another thought, how well do you think "libertarian Republicans" will do with a Scamtorum? Or a Romney?

Do you really believe your guy will "cut" government?

Clint| 3.10.12 @ 1:46PM

" Fmr. Senior Aide, US Cong. Ron Paul, 1997 – 2003
Campaign Coordinator, Ron Paul for Congress, 1995/96
National Organizer, Draft Ron Paul for President, 1991/92
Travel Aide/Personal Asst. Ron Paul, Libertarian for President
1987/88

I have been asked by various media the last few days for my comments, view of the current situation regarding my former boss Ron Paul, as he runs for the presidency on the Republican ticket.

I’ve noticed in some media that my words have been twisted and used for an agenda from both sides. And I wish to set the record straight with media that I trust and know will get the story right: conservative/libertarian-conservative bloggers.

Is Ron Paul a “racist.” In short, No. I worked for the man for 12 years, pretty consistently. I never heard a racist word expressed towards Blacks or Jews come out of his mouth. Not once. And understand, I was his close personal assistant. It’s safe to say that I was with him on the campaign trail more than any other individual, whether it be traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska or Boston, Massachusetts in the presidential race, or across the congressional district to San Antonio or Corpus Christi, Texas.

He has frequently hired blacks for his office staff, starting as early as 1988 for the Libertarian campaign. He has also hired many Hispanics, including his current District staffer Dianna Gilbert-Kile. "

Well to you Mitt Romney supporters if his Romneycare doesn's scare you off, his employing John Holdren should. This Holdren guy is a certifiable Left Wing kook who is really out there on the fringes. Under him nudge could become shove. He's really dangerous. No "moderate" would come within 10 feet of him.

Long live operation Chaos! A big thanks to Ron Paul, without whom our plan would not have come together. The next step in the plan is to have Santorum nominated Veep. And for Paul suppporters not to be allowed into the convention hall. The outcome is so foreordained that in the end you guys'll say "It wuz a conspiracy!" And I'm here to tell you now, it WAS.
