Blue Collar Blues

Even if Mitt Romney has a relatively good night tonight, Rick Santorum could still expose a weakness in the former Massachusetts governor’s candidacy: Romney has lagged behind in winning the votes of blue-collar conservatives and working class Americans. These voters will be very important in the general election, as Barack Obama has had very little rapport with them dating all the way back to his 2008 primary campaign against Hillary Clinton.

That’s why Santorum is making a late-minute stop in Cuyahoga County today. Granted, the argument will be blunted somewhat if Romney follows up his narrow win in Michigan with another squeaker in Ohio. But the breakdown of the electorate will matter a great deal. Romney is going to need to put together a broad center-right coalition of voters if he is the nominee. Santorum will press the case that despite his harder-edged conservatism, he is the one better equipped do to do so — if the data supports that argument.

Gee, you don't have to do pre-loss spin. Wait until tomorrow if it's necessary.

Anyway, Quinnipiac has been splitting out some of their results by household income. In their final Ohio poll, for instance, they got these results...

Under 30K: Romney 31, Santorum 24
30K-50K: Santorum 33, Romney 25
50K-100K: Santorum 36, Romney 33
Over 100K: Romney 43, Santorum 30.

Weird, no? Maybe it's just Quinnipiac, I dunno. But Romney wins the poorest voters, by a decent margin. My guess is they don't count as "blue collar" by Spectator standards. Around here, favorable titles are reserved for groups that like Rick.

Romney also wins the richest voters, which is more in line with coventional wissom. He pretty much splits the 50K-100K group with Santorum. Only in the 30K-50K band does he lose decisively to Rick.

So I'm sure the Spectator will define those beloved "blue collar" folks as...surprise, 30K-50K (wink).

Santorum has always been able to reach out and find an affinity with working class people.

Romney offers working class people with strong conservative social and religious convictions.....absolutely nothing.

The doctor's son who has never held a real job is blue collar?

I'd prefer that these candidates present 'America as it should be, as its been', even with the warts associated with every human endeavor. Targeting any special self-interest is one of the least attractive elements in politics.
