Manny Ramirez has signed a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics.

Ramirez abruptly retired early in the 2011 season during a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Rays after testing positive for performance enhancing substances for a second time.

In January, Ramirez applied for and was granted reinstatement by MLB. Should he make the team, Ramirez will have to serve another 50 game suspension for his second violation. A third violation would result in a lifetime ban from MLB.

Despite his mercurial nature, this is a low risk signing for Oakland as they are only paying him $500,000. As he approaches 40, I don’t expect he’ll do much for the Athletics. But if he is productive, it’ll be a bargain.

How many millions did Manny make while cheating? He should be banned from baseball.

While he was suspended for breaking policy, he didn't get paid a dime in accordance with MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

He was paid for those years before the ban. He was paid millions while on steroids.

I just don't think Manny is worth the risk. He's already been suspended twice, 50 games and 100 games. That's an entire season's worth of games thrown away because he can't perform without steroids. One more time and it's over for him. He's not worth it.

Now that Manny is going to the Bay area, we know that there is no steroid or prohibited substance use there. Of course, if he does test positive again, will that be a case of Manny being Manny, or Manny being Barry?

What a bum. The Red Sox rid themselves of him and among the many reasons was the turmoil he created on the team. The Sox were glad to be rid of him. This guy is a legend in his own mind. Go ahead, just ask him.

At 40? Nah.

Instead of trying to contend in 2012, Oakland has stocked up on high-upside prospects. The Angels will bury them this season, Manny will get bored, and all of those prospects will be exposed to Manny being Manny. Why not instead opt for a hard-working solid citizen like Hideki Matsui?
