Mitt Romney has narrowly prevailed in the week long
Maine Republican Caucuses. With 95% of the ballots counted,
Romney won 39% of the vote just edging out Ron Paul who garnered
36% of the vote.
Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, both of whom made little effort
in the Pine Tree state, finished third and fourth with
18% and 6%, respectively.
It was a good day for Romney who earlier in the day also won the
CPAC Straw Poll. Still, I’m sure Romney’s people are concerned that
he didn’t win a New England state by a more convincing margin.

" Poll: Obama over 50% vs. Mitt Romney
President Barack Obama holds a clear lead over Mitt Romney in a hypothetical general election match-up, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Among all Americans, Obama leads Romney 52 to 43 percent, whereas among registered voters, the president has a narrower edge over Romney, 51 to 45 percent."

Ask the Santorum folks in Maine.
The funniest part was after Paul spoke, the Senator from NH spoke for Romney offering only that he could win, which was wink wink funny, and a surrogate spoke for Santorum with some solid passion, they asked if Gingrich had a surrogate--
The crowd yelled No. And then all of us clapped-united for a moment. Paul took my county, the key one in Maine for electing Governor LePage.
I'd note that Washington County was postponed until next Saturday on rumors of an inch of snow, so we'll get a final score after next weekend.
Of course, all that matters is the delegates...

No one knows the delegate count so far from most of these caucuses because it relies on supporter dedication to volunteer to be precinct delegates to country conventions and then to state conventions. Someone that comes in third in the straw poll could in the end have more delegates.

Dai Alanye | 2.11.12 @ 10:14PM
No delegates were awarded from Maine. None.
The party leader stressed the point when announcing the results, that Maine is a beauty contest pure and simple, with many local caucuses not even bothering to vote.
But if anyone wishes to think so, I suppose the 5000 who voted in Maine count for more than the 240,000 who voted in Missouri.

"Do you notice that Mitt is within the margin of error against Obama, while Santorum gets decimated, as does Newt?"
Wow, that's actually completely untrue. All the polls in the recent week have had Santorum polling a point or two worse, and in some cases better, than Romney. If you're going to be a Mittbot, could you at least not lie.

NO delegates were awarded from those Minnesota and Missouri either, if you want to get technical about it. The bickering among the GOP electorate will be the death nail against Obama. I will vote for the GOP nominee, whoever he is(although someone picked out of the blue at a brokered Convention brings out hostility in me). The alternative is Obama. Does that register? Is that clear? Sometimes I wonder, especially in light of the fact that a large percentage of the population still believes that Dick Cheney is Vice-President, according to a recent Fox poll.
RJ| 2.12.12 @ 3:03AM
I don't see a "brokered" convention can nominate a candidate not already in the race. How can they throw out all of the primaries and caucuses and give the nomination to some one who didn't run in a single race? It would be open defiance of the process. Also, someone who has not been running for president and hasn't participated in any of the debates would be very unprepared for the November election. As we have seen in this primary season, various candidates can look very impressive, but fall apart once subject to significant scrutiny. Who ever the nominee is, it will be one of the candidates in the race right now, not someone called in from bleachers.
Garfield| 2.12.12 @ 2:53AM

Believe it or not in this particular contest in a Blue Region and in a Bluish-Purpulish state( Look who their great senators are ) it does not surprise me that Romney would win or that Newt and Santorum would not bother--not worth spending money there. But I am grad that Paul gave Romney a run for his money. By design or not a NOT ROMNEY came very close and the total NOT ROMNEY is 60%. Once agian showing that Romney support even in Maine is weak. and in other regions worse than that HA
Eric Dondero | 2.12.12 @ 9:04AM
For all you Santorum people out there, consider, there's a third-party candidacy looming on the libertarian front. Fmr. NM Gov. Gary Johnson will be on the ballot in all 50 states as a Libertarian.
Now you tell me please, what appeal does Rick Santorum have to libertarians?
At least, the fiscally conservative/socially moderate Romney has some claim to the libertarian-leaning vote. A Santorum candidacy would prove disastrous for the GOP ticket. Libertarian-leaners would flee to Johnson in the millions.
Floyd Looney| 2.12.12 @ 12:29PM
I have seen no evidence that Romney is a fiscal conservative but he is a flaming lefty on social issues. There aren't millions of libertarians judging from the history of that party
Tom| 2.12.12 @ 9:06AM
I put little stock in a state that repeatedly elects "Republican" senators like Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe as being in the GOP mainstream.

Pointless. Less than 6,000 bothered to show up. Wow. That is pathetic. The state GOP there is a joke.
Trampass| 2.12.12 @ 4:06PM
Conservatives should have swallowed hard and voted for Paul. We need to be much more strategic. Santorum nor NEwt were going to win,so why not vote for Paul. IF Newt and Santorum's votes were given to Paul he'd have won in a landslide, really embarrassing Willard.
In future primaries it would be nice if Newt and Santorum work together. On Feb 28,Arizona is winner take all,and a lock for Willard. Michigan is the same day. Gingrich voters in Michigan should vote for Santorum,as Newt is doing poorly there.
In VA,neither Newt or Santorum are on the ballot, only Paul. Vote for Paul.
In caucus states like Alaska and Idaho on super tuesday, they should again vote for Paul,as Romney is the favorite. Likewise in Wyoming and Kansas.
Willard must be denied the delegates. We can stop him,but not if we are fighting eachother.

Obama keeps shooting himself in the foot like with the contraception mandate so I can only come to the conclusion that Obama is so confident about the upcoming election that he figures he doesn't need the votes of pro-life Catholic Democrats. What does that mean? That means that the G.O.P. establishment couldn't have had a worse pick than Romney. In a Romney/Obama matchup however it doesn't matter who wins...at least according to George Soros.
