The Spectacle Blog

It is quite clear to me, from reading almost all of her posts, that Jennifer Rubin isn’t turned off by Mitt Romney, but that she also is very favorably disposed toward Rick Santorum. Indeed, her writings indicate, I think, a slight — very slight, but also very consistent — preference for Santorum, not Romney. Latest case in point, a long advice post from her today for Santorum. It certainly is no ringing endorsement of Santorum ove Romney. But it is full of good will for the Pennsylvanian. Here’s how she ends it:

[T]he good news for Santorum is that the Republican electorate seems especially susceptible to impressive debate performance, feisty rhetoric and bold attacks on Obama. Santorum will need to do all that and more. But if anyone in the GOP field (past or present) can do it, Santorum’s the guy.

Toward that end, Rubin offers a lot of sound strategic advice. The best is to continue stressing his economic platform, so as to dispel the notion that he is only a social-issues candidate.

The point here is not to bait those who think (wrongly) that Rubin is a shill for Romney; the point is that her advice for Santorum is good, well worth reading, and also worth it for readers as a way to adjudge, going forward, if Santorum is being successful, and why or why not he is or isn’t.

I won't jump ship to support Santorum in the primary. However I will support him in the general, as long as Romney is not on the ticket.

I still think Newt Gingrich would be a better person to run against Obama, cause he's actually taken the fight to the media and Obama.

Santorum has been largely ignored thus far.

i dont understand why one political opiner, you, cares so much about what another co equal political opiner, rubin, thinks. you act as if you correctly interpret rubin you will arrive at the absolute correct opinion. in post after post you tell your readers what rubin has pronounced on such and such a subject. id i want to know what she said i wont go to the spectacle but to the wapo. in my opinion she is a very disagreeable person and thats why i stopped reading her posts.

is she some kind of cryptic prophet that needs her disciples to tell us what she meant by her latest pronouncement. do you think her authority will enhance the persuasiveness of your opinions. what kind of writer are you.

It's just another way for this faux-conservative to bash Newt: "Rep. Michele Bachmann (R- Minn.),Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich all attempted to attack Mitt Romney from the right. Each of these candidates proved to be too flawed to weather scrutiny when he or she climbed into contention."

Huh?

Derek Leaberry| 2.7.12 @ 4:40PM

Isn't Jennifer Rubin's endorsement about as important as Mr. T's or Donny Osmond's. Am I missing something?

Drek| 2.7.12 @ 4:53PM

Hillyer,

Rubin is as much for Romney as any close member of his family.

But this isn't about Rubin, --------- the Jewish Democrat who is apt to opine on all matters Republican.

This is about YOU!

There isn't anything moot about whether or not Rubin is a shill for Romney.

The issue is whether or not QUIN HILLYER is a shill for the Romney campaign, and if so, for how long.

Now that's the narrow issue at bar, and arguments in favour of you being a shill are being marshaled even now.

Santorum's problems:
Voted for
1. NCLB
2. Medicare Part D
Voted against
1. Right-to-Work law
2. Free-trade
Santorum's advantage:
1. He will carry PA if he gets the nod in 2012, too bad for Obama, despite of his senate loss in 2006.

Dai Alanye | 2.7.12 @ 8:37PM

If only certain people could read and comprehend.
Santoum's ratings during sixteen years in Congress:-

American Conservative Union -- 88%
National Right to Life Committee -- 100%
Americans for Tax Reform -- 95%
National Tax Limitation Committee -- 92%
U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- 88%
League of Private Property Voters -- 94%

More conservative than Romney, more conservative than Newt, and with less baggage than either.

We're The Pennsylvania Gun & Bible Clutchin' Conservatives, Who Helped Throw Little Ricky's Ass Out Of The Senate, After He Stepped In The Last Weeks And Propped Up The RINO-CINO Poster Boy,Arlen Specter Against Our Republican Primary Guy, Pat Toomey.

Now, Little Ricky And Specter Have Been Chased Away And Our Tea Party Senator, Pat Toomey Is In.

If Little Ricky Comes Back To Pennsylvania,We'll Throw His Big Government Israel Firster Ass Out Again,

Make Our Day Little Ricky.

Occam's Tool| 2.8.12 @ 2:13AM

Don't you live in California, Clint?

Incidentally, Paul keeps losing. And Toomey is VERY PRO-ISRAEL. Why, by your lights he's an "Israel firster." How do you stand being such a moron, Clint?

Occam's Tool| 2.8.12 @ 2:14AM

So, you're going to vote for Obama in PA, Clint? 'Cause Ricky is gonna hand Paul's ass to him in PA.

Dai Alanye | 2.7.12 @ 8:40PM

Santorum's strategy got us Roberts and Alito. I expect he'll start taking votes from the loon soon.

Oldefarte| 2.7.12 @ 10:36PM

Wait, Roberts and Alito are a bad thing? Compared to THELMA & LOUISE that Barry has provided??????

Ms. Rubin hasn't been doing her homework and watching 19 debates for all of her "If..." post-its have been addressed and not in a "check-the-box whisper" either:
+ RomneyCare not an unconstitutional "silver bullet" -- See "not paying their fair share" Wendy Williams of Cape Cod, Mass. and her IBM retired husband fined $1,000 yearly for lobbyist shifting goalposts on private health plans cap to out-of-pocket expenses for individuals; or outlaws Lauren and Nick Destito of Plainville, Mass. fined $3,000 for their $750/mo. policy, purchased during their 25 year landscaping business bankruptcy to be compliant, didn't meet the state's specifications as deemed by state politburo staffed by state specified union workers paying only 25% of their mandated health-insurance premiums. #Iwontbereconstructed
+ Romney accomplishment(s) -- What has Romney ever done to advance the conservative cause?
+ MSM electability through "positive earned media coverage" -- Santorum has been given so little media coverage to date one delights in your insistence he can't do it without you, the MSM.
+ "haven’t heard...economic agenda...cut spending...tax plan." -- Gee, wouldn't it be nice if Ms. Rubin took the time to inform her readers of said Santorum policy positions instead of taking the time to post her divining rod bets?
+ "clunkers" Medicare Part D, NCLB, right-to-work legislation -- None as egregious as Obama's crony Cash-for-Clunkers but let me fill in the blanks for you: Medicare Part D brought us HSAs, Medicare Advantage and as the "premium support" vouchers in the Ryan Plan now Ryan/Wyden plan, and regrets the preventative care of prescription medicine was not paid for; NCLB he would repeal (I disagree as it has brought the pot to a boil on school choice with parental rights); right-to-work would have changed his state's law from the Federal level but as a presidential candidate he has signed the pledge.
+ "grow in stature, project himself as Romney’s equal" -- Rick Santorum is a man not a Chia Pet. Romney's ceiling in 2008 and now reflects on his own diminished consistent conservative stature not Santorum with the courage to ensure America's cultural inheritance with Justices Alito and Roberts (Toomey voted for Sotomayor).
+ It is not that voters need to "jump from the Romney ship" into rough seas but to awaken from the dull drone of a behemoth sloganeering campaign and engage in the issues despite the MSM blackout.

Try this Kipling approved "If..." Ms. Rubin: "If you can keep your head..." Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich sailed away from limited government and individual sovereignty on an individual mandate, Cap and Trade, and Wall Street bailouts socializing losses and privatizing profits -- Rick Santorum held fast.

With Obama orchestrating America's retreat while our men are on the field from Iraq and Afghanistan I don't wonder that Ms. Rubin is neglectful of the phrase "winning hearts and minds" but ultimately the grassroots are not about winning one election but winning hearts and minds to the conservative cause for future generations to stand against statists. Let freedom ring!
