Los Angeles Dodgers secondbaseman Chase Utley has become public enemy #1 for this slide into second base which resulted in a broken leg for New York Mets shorstop Ruben Tejada during Game 2 of the NLDS last night.
Adding insult to injury, the MLB replay officials saw fit to overturn the out call despite the fact that Utley never touched second. The Dodgers rallied for four runs and won the game 5-2 evening the series at 1-1.
Considerable debate has ensued as to whether MLB will need to review the neighborhood play in the way they revised plays at the plate after San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey sustained a fractured leg during a home plate collision in 2011.
It has also been pointed out that Utley took out Tejada on a similar play in 2010 although Utley did apologize to Tejada and Tejada had no objection to Utley's actions. However, I don't think the Mets will feel any such generosity this time around.
