Clint Eastwood 2012

The only Super Bowl commercial I am going to remember is the spot Clint Eastwood did for Chrysler. In two minutes, the lifelong Republican made a more convincing case for America than any of the GOP hopefuls have in six months.

“It’s half time America and our second half is about to begin.”

Damn! Talk about words of iron.

President Obama has to be thankful he doesn’t have to share a debate sage with Eastwood.

Chrysler now owned by Fiat.
GM owned by Obama.
Taxpayers out $40 Billon on the bailouts.
It's not halftime, it's 4th quarter...

somnolence| 2.5.12 @ 10:16PM

I don't buy Chryslers, so I'm GLAD I missed the commercial. Once halftime arrived I went into the other room and played four long jazz jam sessions deliberately just to miss the Madonna fiasco, and thus, missed the Eastwood commercial somewhere in that time frame. GM and Chrysler are permanently off my list for future buys. I, like millions of Americans, am still waiting for my GM profit check for helping to bail out their fat ass union. Eastwood's political and cultural observances have never impressed me. I swear Clark Gable made John Wayne and Eastwood both look like David Niven in comparison at times as far as strength in screen appearance.

Bob Grant| 2.5.12 @ 10:49PM

I completely agree with your GM/Chrysler stance and completely disagree with your Gable -Wayne/Eastwood comparison.

But we can disagree among friends here at AmSpec.

Occam's Tool| 2.6.12 @ 10:46AM

David Niven WAS an actual war hero, by the way. Looks deceive. So was General Jimmy Stewart.

Ward Bond| 2.6.12 @ 11:35AM

We sure had some great ones back then didn't we? John Wayne, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Brig. General Jimmy Stewart,Walter Brennan, Ward Bond, Gary Cooper, Ronald Reagan to name just a few. All great Repulicans. What a difference in Hollywood today.

Bob Grant| 2.6.12 @ 1:10PM

Occam,

With all due respect, I'll take Rooster Cogburn and Harry Callahan over Phileas Fogg any day.

beebop2| 2.6.12 @ 5:17AM

Wouldnt ever buy a NEW GM or Chrysler because it would only profit those who stole from investors and taxpayers. I would buy a new FORD. If I had to buy a USED chevy, I would remove any and all insignia. Thieves should never be rewarded.

Derek Tyler| 2.5.12 @ 10:54PM

I missed the commercial too.

@somnolence may be right about Clark Gable. If so, the same is true for Lee Van Cleef and Charles Bronson in comparison to Eastwood. However, lately, in public appearances, Eastwood is a class act. The awarding of a lifetime Oscar to "il maestro", Ennio Morricone, is a case in point, where he translated the mild mannered composer's comments from Italian.

This reminds me of James Coburn's line in "In Like Flint" (1968), where the superspy muses, "An actor as President?"!!

Bob Grant| 2.5.12 @ 11:17PM

Lee Van Cleef. Everybody's favorite bad guy, or should be.

He played an excellent con in the film noir movie Kansas City Confidential.

albert constantine jr.| 2.6.12 @ 9:52AM

Lee Van Cleef was also one of Lee Marvin's bad guy associates in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and as such played villains in both Clint Eastwood & John Wayne movies.

JimH| 2.6.12 @ 11:43AM

The first movie I recall Lee in was The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. It seemed to me that he stole the spaghetti westerns he was in. Getting back to Clint; just think, had he been a candidate we could have had debates laced with ‘Go ahead make my day’, ‘Do you feel lucky’ and ‘A man’s got to know his limitations’.

Arbiter55| 2.6.12 @ 2:52PM

Lee Van Cleef was also one of the three bad guys out to get Gary Cooper in "High Noon", and he was a bad guy in Randolph Scott's "Ride Lonesome". The film critic providing the commentary in "RL" stated that Van Cleef had "the best bad guy face ever". I have to agree.

Bob Grant| 2.6.12 @ 1:16PM

...by the way, you can watch this movie in it's entirety on You Tube because it's one of only a handful of movies considered public domain.

If you like cheesy, film noir B movies with interesting plot twists and good dialogue (think Reservoir Dogs), you'll like this movie.

Derek Tyler| 2.5.12 @ 11:04PM

Thanks for the links Aaron.

It sounds like Clint is shilling for Obama's re-election, the auto bailouts and the unions.

He has those tendencies.

Ward B ond| 2.6.12 @ 12:00AM

The reason Eastwood stands out so much is because these days men are hard to find in Hollywood.

POST American| 2.6.12 @ 1:04AM

---NEVER taken in by the one-note EYE---CON
that is Clint Eastwood.

Face it, Eastwood has delivered decades of
skilfully demoralizing, 'EUGENICS agenda
friendly' POST American cultural incest
---even as he maintained TOTAL SILENCE
on the 4 decades underway Globalist RED
China handover and TREASON OP.

And so the poor, disenfranchised 'Avergae Joe'
was seduced into sitting passive for 4 decades
----WAITING for the stylized loner to saunter
into town and set things ---straight.

Just a little REALITY CHECK as the
60th Anniversary of the awesomely
'EUGENICS REAL'

--------------KOREA WAR--------------

passes ----'unnoticed'.

FINALLY, it MUST be noted, Eastwood
himself is a Korea era draftee who 'missed'
the war.

Tim the Enchanter| 2.6.12 @ 11:41AM

Huh?

somnolence| 2.6.12 @ 1:20AM

Gable fought in World War 2 by flying bombing missions over Germany while John Wayne made pictures on the homefront. He more than equaled both Eastwood and Wayne in tough guy persona in his roles on the screen, and there is a good deal of evidence also about his political conservatism.

Will| 2.6.12 @ 9:13AM

A new low for Eastwood, shilling for the Port au Prince of Lake Michigan, Detroit. How many millions, billions did we lose on the Chrysler bailout? the GM?
NBC-Immelt-Teamster-Budweiser-GE-Hip-Hop...the disgusting slide continues, unimpeded...

albert constantine jr.| 2.6.12 @ 9:53AM

Has it occurred to anyone that Clint was merely playing in a sequel to Gran Torino, where he played a retired auto worker (though he has apparently switched from Ford to Chrysler)?

Con Chef (NB) | 2.6.12 @ 10:17AM

YAAAAAY! We bailed out the UAW & f-ed the bond holders, but "its halftime in America!"

C'mon, "Gunny Highway." I expect better from you.

JimH| 2.6.12 @ 2:11PM

If you want a 'Gunny', is R. Lee Ermy to old?

1ConservativeUSA| 2.6.12 @ 11:01AM

Yes, but watch the Obama re-election regime make the "2nd half" of America mean that Obama deserves the second half of his eight year term.

I love Clint and I know he's a conservative. I just kept thinking this as I watched the commercial, given the Big Auto, Big Labor, four year term consepts.

Al Adab| 2.6.12 @ 2:37PM

What I heard was, it's halftime and out team (which I took to mean the team for freedom and economic growth) is behind and we had better get our act together and fight hard or surrender the future. Apparently many, including Rove, didn't hear it that way but I think we should jump on it lest the other side uses it to campaign for a second term. Remember morning in America? Well folks it's halftime and we better pull out all the stops.

Drek| 2.6.12 @ 11:25AM

There's another possible reason behind Eastwood's behavior!

He knows Detroit is hurting.

He knows the people there are hurting.

Somebody approaches him and asks him to do an ad that attempts to reinspire and reenergize Detroit and by extension, the American automotive industry.

He agrees.

He might not have even noticed that the ad skillfully plays into Obama's reelection efforts. I myself didn't notice as much until I saw a tweety by Benjamin Shapiro.

He might have just done it because he thought that if he could help in someway, he would.

Al Adab| 2.6.12 @ 11:51AM

I saw the spot and was impressed. It was unclear who the sponser was, but if the GOP doesn't run that ad (or some version of it) every day across this country they are missing a great opportunity.

Drek| 2.6.12 @ 12:17PM

It takes more than Elmer Gantryism to turn the economy around.

Rah rah speeches are one thing. POLICIES that actually reenergize the economy quite another.

PCP Smoker| 2.6.12 @ 8:04PM

Did you NOT figure out this was a commercial FOR Obama? How stupid are you? Scumbag.

PCP Smoker| 2.6.12 @ 8:07PM

Last time I checked, none "came together" to do anything with GM or Detroit. Government statists like Bush and Obama started to hand tax money to these companies, while ripping off the bond holders. Asides from the constitutional violation of the Government owning a car company and violating the bankruptcy laws, whats so good about this deal? Get over the emotional crap and start thinking.

Kingofthenet| 2.6.12 @ 8:45PM

Don't quit your Day Jobs, this is Marketing 101 NOBODY want to spend 25K on a Loser, but a Gritty Comeback Kid, where do I buy a 300?
