Head-to-head, horse-race polls this far out don’t mean a LOT,
but they do show important trends. In that light, behold
Rasmussen’s newest, which shows Rick Santorum as the only
Republican to beat Obama head to head. This is the latest in a
week-long series of polls, from pollsters left, right and center,
showing Santorum doing better against Romney than Gingrich or Paul,
or better against Obama than Gingrich or Paul and either better or
about even with Romney when matched against Obama — or, having a
significantly better favorable-to-unfavorable ratio (this IS a
significant poll number this far out, unlike a horse-race match-up)
than anybody in the GOP field.
Also today, Phyllis Schlafly announced she would vote for
Santorum. This follows endorsements or “support” statements in
favor of Santorum this week from Michelle Malkin, David Limbaugh,
Sharron Angle, Tom Tancredo, Jane Norton, Bob Schaffer, and
others.
Not bad for a guy who the establishment media keeps writing
off.

Odd--I don't see the MittBots talking about THIS poll.
Garfield| 2.4.12 @ 2:27PM
Only reason Santorum is doing well is cause he's getting donations from Mittbots in order to keep the Conservative vote divided.
teflon93| 2.4.12 @ 2:36PM
Evidence, please.
RJ| 2.4.12 @ 2:37PM
For me the debates have been informative. I started out hoping Perry would be the guy, but he quickly looked ill-prepared. Then Newt was inspiring, but he got off message and failed to be "relentlessly positive." As the debates continued, I became much more impressed with Santorum. I would be much more confident with him as a nominee than Romney. I hope he makes it.
Oldefarte| 2.4.12 @ 2:39PM
He just ain't gonna cut it, just as Paul won't. It's between Romney and Ginguich, and the former probably will be the nominee. Both have assets and liabilities as such, and it's a matter of trying to figure out which would be better at beating Obama. Mitt has the professional managerial chip, whereas Newt has the political shake-things-up one. TO HAVE PLAYED AND LOST THAN TO HAVE NEVER PLAYED AT ALL won't cut it, the stakes are simply too high. We don't have four more years to experiment with bankrupting this country. We may not even have one more year frankly. We just don't, and to make the wrong choice would send up to HADES quickly!!!
Garfield| 2.4.12 @ 2:46PM
A good reason to support Newt Gingrich is that the establishment and the left wing media all hate his guts.
He seems to be hated by all the people that have been the problem.
These same people say nice things about Romney.
Seems to me that Newt is the one we want to be the nominee and beat Obama, if nothing else it would be great to watch the establishment types all have panic attacks.
Paul Zummo | 2.4.12 @ 2:47PM
First of all, using all caps doesn't make you sound any mor einformative than you are. Second, your comment is tantamount to sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling "I'm not listening." The base can't stand Mitt, and a good chunk of the country can't stand Newt. Neither are as conservative as Santorum, and neither are poling as well against Obama.
But by all means, discount the best candidate standing.
RJ| 2.4.12 @ 3:04PM
While I prefer Newt's economic platform, Santorum has won me over with his character and his consistency in supporting conservative positions. He hasn't pandered or engaged in mud-slinging. He has led an honorable life. You know what he stands for; who knows what Mitt Romney really believes and Newt keeps changing his views. He is simply a much better person to represent the Republican Party and the United States.
Oldefarte| 2.4.12 @ 3:36PM
Before I'd critisize others for capitalization errors while taliking about sticking things in crevices, I'd suggest that the spelling is perhaps POLLING, not POLING, okay? Have a nice day!
Paul Zummo | 2.4.12 @ 3:49PM
One can correct typos (well, maybe later). Stupidity . . . not so much.
florin| 2.5.12 @ 1:51PM
As of today, Feb. 5th, Santorum is ahead in the poll asking who can beat Obama...and he is surging in other polls. I don't understand this...and was stunned when I read the latest polls this morning but then I thought that maybe decency and good character and good family values do count for something...let's hope.!
RJ| 2.6.12 @ 2:17AM
Character was the primary issue when George Washington was elected President. It worked out well then. Character and policy positions are good guides to selecting governmental representatives.

Santorum is the guy I'm voting for on Tuesday.

The Olde One's last attack on Santorum was a claim that Rick was using his sick daughter for political gain. This one hinting that Santorum will put the Pope in charge is an improvement. Keep up those high standards of political discourse, old fella.
florin| 2.5.12 @ 1:53PM
Keep encouraging Santorum, Jo Johnson...he is gaining in the polls which means that Americans still care about character and good family values and courage...let's hope no one convinces him to quit. If gingrich backs out, Santorum will get his votes...let's see. Santorum needs to hang in there and continue to get his message out...

I'm no MittBot. I'm a conservative. No pollster has asked my opinion, but I've donated to only two of the candidates, Perry and Santorum.
Actually, I've made two donations to Santorum. Is he perfect? No, but he's the most conservative of the lot.
Newt never tempted me as I don't think the electorate will vote for Newt in November. Plus the dimocRATs and their media claque have a lot of Newt history to distort and lie about. Santorum? Not so much.
I think it's time for Newt and Ron to head for the exit.
Garfield| 2.4.12 @ 10:34PM
I actually think Santorum should step out of this and Ron Paul too.
I think Newt Gingrich should stay in. The fact that the establishment looks like they will all have heart failure if Newt becomes President, in my opinion is a good thing.
He is hated by everyone in Washington that caused this mess, that's a pretty good reason to vote for him.
If Santorum is the nominee, I will support him (as long as Mitt Romney is not on the ticket). I don't think Santorum is a skilled enough orator to defeat Obama.
I think a Gingrich/Santorum ticket would work, so would a Gingrich/Palin, Gingrich/Perry (I think Perry would have no problems beating gaffe-a-minute Biden).
I will not lift a finger to support Romney, whom at this stage seems to me, to be no different than Obama.
Oh and don't bother to say it's cause my emotions are running high, I developed a huge distrust of the man when he ran in the last election.
kf451| 2.5.12 @ 1:15PM
I agree. Santorum should step out. He does worse with every contest.
I would like a Gingrich/Perry ticket.
Christopher C| 2.4.12 @ 4:37PM
I've been wondering for some time when people might begin to re-assess Mr Romney as the Massachusetts Candidate; see that Mr Gingrich is mostly about himself, and full of fury rather than soundness; and take note that, while Ron Paul appears to have a realistic sense of near-panic in his economic prescriptions, also has national security and international relations policies that are, er, uncharacteristic of the US.
So Mr Santorum should receive second and third looks from Republicans. Why has he been so studiously ignored? But now, is the idea beginning to percolate that Mr Santorum has at least one enormous strength compared to the current front runner - the very, very clear difference on Obamacare. Unlike Mr Romney, Mr Santorum recongises that there is INDEED something there to become angry about, and undo.
mjs_pa| 2.4.12 @ 9:32PM
It was so lonely supporting Rick for the longest time, but I'm beginning to get the sweet sense of "surge" that Quin is talking about.
On another point: romney's 'I'm not concerned with the very poor' is far more damaging than the establishment and media are willing to admit.
This may not be scientific but one indicator: My average video on YouTube gets about 20 views. My "romney's: 'I'm not concerned with the very poor'' video has had over 10,000 views.

Casey Abell| 2.4.12 @ 11:55PM
This is the slowest-mo "surge" ever seen. Little Ricky is finishing fourth tonight in Nevada...in a four-man race. He's really surging after his distant fifth place finish in NH, distant third place in SC, and distant third place in FL.
We know Quin is delusional. But does he have to prove it every day?
teflon93| 2.5.12 @ 10:10AM
Whereas the "Romney Surge" is confined to states which cast absentee ballots back before SC and states where every other voter is a Mormon.
Some surge.
kf451| 2.5.12 @ 1:23PM
Exactly. This surge is so slow that it's going in the negative direction:
Iowa: 24.6 %
NH: 9.4
SC: 17.0
FL: 13.4
NV: 11.1 so far

Me thinks you [DA] perhaps need to re-reason my wordings, since in stating that he will put the POPE IN CHARGE is an old and worn out charge from Protestants going back to pre-JFK days. As to the remainder of your thought process ['....Dai Alanye| 2.4.12 @ 8:33PMThe Olde One's last attack on Santorum was a claim that Rick was using his sick daughter for political gain. This one hinting that Santorum will put the Pope in charge is an improvement. Keep up those high standards of political discourse, old fella.....'] please view the following editorial:
'......COMMENTARY ....Santorum's hypocrisy on health care, abortion and embryonic stem cell research. Santorum's campaign website discusses his views on these matters. He is emphatically against a woman's right to control her own body in reproductive matters and is adamantly opposed to embryonic stem cell research. He is against a single-payer national health care system provided to all citizens . He opposes the first two on religious grounds on the third for reasons of political dogma. As to abortion, Santorum flip-flops on his opposition , according to a Care2.com report. It's easy for him to rail against abortion when such ranting might win him votes. It's also easier for him to oppose it because he has the best health care in America available to him and his family -- provided at taxpayer expense, no less. He never had to consider whether care for a terminally ill child would destroy his family financially....... Santorum's family will never lack for health care or face crippling medical debt -- but as far as he's concerned it's fine for your family to have those problems. Santorum's opposition to embryonic stem cell research is ludicrous for two reasons. First, such research involves the collection of cells from a blastocyst, a blob of about 150 cells so small the human eye cannot detect it, according to the National Institute for Health. Second, such research could save the lives of his daughter and countless others suffering from her condition. It's despicable for him to fight against the best possible hope for a cure to the very condition killing his child. It makes me wonder how Santorum's opinion might change if he was an average American with a household income of less than $50,000 per year and no health insurance. I bet he'd sing a different tune. ....'
teflon93| 2.5.12 @ 12:39PM
Far from hypocrisy, Santorum's position is the only consistent one.
How do you explain that of his opponents, which is that the only right to privacy one possesses is to kill your child; for all other decisions you make, whether that decision involves starting a business, choosing a light bulb, or in deciding what healthcare insurance you need, the heavy hand of the federal bureaucracy must be in play?
Oldefarte| 2.5.12 @ 2:04PM
What the editorial above is saying is that '....It's despicable for him to fight against the best possible hope for a cure to the very condition killing his child....'. Would it not be hypocritical and inconsistent in nature to be a beneficiary of the government's single payor healthcare system and alternatively to politisize against same for the private sector?
Ted| 2.6.12 @ 10:27AM
"Santorum's opposition to embryonic stem cell research is ludicrous for two reasons."
Well, it didn't take very long for you to prove you know very little about stem cell research. You and John Kerry are birds of a feather.
Mimi| 2.5.12 @ 1:04PM
Rick Santorum is starting to show up in some of the new POLLS...ie Minn.
WATCH the Romney team start their deviltry on HIM...They have robbed of us of a fair process going after any one who rises to the top...The Party bosses should step in and have a little talk with them....What he does is grossly unfair and will COST THE NATION...he will never be able to repair the damage and will lose the ELECTION.
If he does this to RICK too....we the people know what we have to DO!!!
Marco2| 2.5.12 @ 8:15PM
You're right, if Fr. Rick shows signs of life, Romney and the media will shine a little light on him, and his negatives will go up. As morally bankrupt as we are, I don't believe that most of us want to elect a national pope in a presidential election As far as his receiving 45% vs. Obama in a presidential poll goes, that he isn't Obama is probably the key. I doubt that 20% of the registered voters in this country even know who he is.
