Orlando, Florida — When Mitt Romney was governor, he
vetoed a bill to increase funding for nursing homes that were
considering saving money by closing their kosher kitchens and
bringing in food from off-site for residents who keep kosher.
Yesterday, Newt Gingrich said that Mitt Romney “eliminated serving
kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare”; at
Commentary, Alana Goodman
examined the claim in detail and found it more than a little
dubious:
Romney’s decision was not, as Gingrich claims, a choice to
“eliminate kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under
Medicare.” First of all, it was a choice made by the nursing homes
themselves, not the Massachusetts government. Second, it was never
actually going to prevent kosher residents from accessing kosher
food. And third, Romney’s decision wouldn’t have cut anything - he
simply vetoed additional funds, keeping funding at the status quo
during a budget crisis year. Which means Gingrich’s comments have
little basis in reality.
Today,
we learn that the Gingrich campaign is robocalling Florida
voters with a recording that says:
As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney vetoed a bill paying
for kosher food for our seniors in nursing homes. Holocaust
survivors, who for the first time, were forced to eat non-kosher,
because Romney thought $5 was too much to pay for our grandparents
to eat kosher. Where is Mitt Romney’s compassion for our seniors?
Tuesday you can end Mitt Romney’s hypocrisy on religious freedom,
with a vote for Newt Gingrich. Paid for by Newt 2012.
Again, no one was ever “forced to eat non-kosher,” and invoking
the Holocaust for a dishonest political attack is more than a
little distasteful.

The more I see Newt, the less I like him. He should drop out ASAP. We should all coalesce around Romney. The goal is to beat Obama, not to salve Newt's strange ego problems.

Aye. I haven't seen any anti-Gingirch ads, nor put much weight on anti-Gingrich commentary online, but the man himself has been amazingly successful at turning me against him.
Bumr50| 1.31.12 @ 2:25PM
Mitt Romney is not a conservative. Newt ain't the best, but it's especially satisfying that he's what the establishment left us with to beat Mittens the Inevitable Moderate over the head with.
After all of Romney's million-dollar falsehoods, the Romney Establishment RINO brigade feels the need to trumpet every negative ad that Gingrich runs as "smacking of desperation."
I might have to vote for Mittens come November, but nothing is going to stop the base of the Republican party from tearing him to shreds should he not govern conservatively enough for US. He will be attacked relentlessly, and no amount of attempted shaming about "attacking our own" is going to stop us - because he's NOT one of our own.

Uh, sir, running an ad and placing robo-calls which falsely claim that Mitt denied kosher meals to Holocaust survivors is the very definition of "smacking of desperation." It is hard to get any lower than that.
Newt lost me -- and should have lost every right-thinking conservative -- with the "right wing social engineering" comment.
I'll be voting for Santorum when I get my chance in the Michigan primary.

"More than a little distasteful" sums up my general impression of Newt Gingrich.

Won't be crying for Romney since he has spent 3 times as much on lies.
RJ| 1.31.12 @ 3:02PM
The negative campaign by Romney and Newt is like two bridge officers arguing over who spilled milk while the ship is sinking.
Guys, the economy is in decline and its root cause is a corrupt government that has spent the nation into poverty and is lawlessly stealing our freedoms. We want to hear what you would do about it. Anything else is a distraction.
xymbaline| 1.31.12 @ 3:28PM
Fatuous.
Threatening to cut off funds to nursing homes, and then claiming they did everything 'voluntarily' is yet another Romney lie.

Mittens is toast in November.
Kingsmill| 1.31.12 @ 3:57PM
I tend to doubt Newt on this. I lived in Mass. while Willard was Gov and he did nothing to control budgets.....except raise fees through the roof.
Occam's Tool| 1.31.12 @ 4:33PM
I'm voting for Santorum---although Minnesota is apparently non-binding.
RJ| 1.31.12 @ 6:03PM
Santorum's behavior during this campaign has been much more admirable than either Romney or Gingrich. I believe that is evidence of his character.
Warrior | 1.31.12 @ 8:05PM
You told me a week or so ago, my vote for Ron Paul is a vote for Romney. So now is your vote for Santorum really a stealth vote for Romney?
Occam's Tool| 1.31.12 @ 9:27PM
Hell if I know. However, I prefer Santorum, but do not hate Romney. But with Paul averaging 7% or so of the vote, your vote for him is wasted.
Warrior | 1.31.12 @ 10:20PM
So with Santorum averaging around 10% of the vote, I guess we can use deductive reasoning to say your vote makes about 3% more sense. Personally, I think Santorum is the most conservative candidate of the top three. Just wanted to poke at you a bit. Hope you it's not too cold in MN. 80's and sunny today...another poke.

68% of ads in Florida were anti-Gingrich. Romney is a slimeball who is trying to buy the election with negative ads. I won't vote for him.
Oldefarte| 1.31.12 @ 10:15PM
Ah veh, this has to be some kind of a grand mistake.......Newt must have meant that RON PAUL BUDGETED OUT KOCHER MEALS FROM HOLOCOST SURVIVORS IN NURSING HOMES, huh??????
