Wolf Blitzer has just gone to a break. He is planning to ask each of the candidates, “Why would your wife make the best First Lady?”

Why does any of that matter? We’re not electing a First Lady. It’s true that some First Ladies publicly exert their influence (Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt come to mind) but is Blitzer thinking that one of the candidates is going to put one of the other candidates’ wives down.

They need to help determine if they are proud of America for the first time in their adult lives. That's a new hoop the left needs the potential first ladies to jump through.

Good chance for the pundits and bomb thrower tomorrow to badmouth Calista as a "home wrecker."

Rockerbabe| 1.27.12 @ 2:33AM

And, just what would you call her? Having a 6 year affair with a married man, whom you are now married to qualifies a person to be a homewrecker. If the shoe fits, wear it!

Drek| 1.26.12 @ 9:33PM

The battle between Santorum/Romney, where Santorum was clearly hurting Romney HAD to be truncated by Blitzer, and all so that we could move on, and move on to what?

TO FIRST LADIES!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable!

Ron Paul sounds like a complete lunatic for the most part.

Jack in Wi.| 1.26.12 @ 11:05PM

The words I heard a lot tonight from the 3 stooges were. " I agree Ron Paul. " Mutt=Nutt=Oblabla. They are just more of the same, 3 peas in the same pod. The only one who has a program to get us out of the mess, we are in is Ron Paul. He has been right on the issues for decades. Ron Paul for Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 1.26.12 @ 9:36PM

Ron Paul sounds like a complete lunatic for the most part.

Mike 3/505| 1.26.12 @ 9:45PM

Actually, tonight, especially on economic issues, he has been more correct than anyone on stage.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 1.26.12 @ 9:45PM

He's so anti-America it's his religion.

Jack in Wi.| 1.26.12 @ 11:07PM

Getting desperate as Mutt sinks under the waves. Ron Paul won the debate as ususal. He is the only sane one on the stage who sees the problems we have and has a solution.

Drek| 1.26.12 @ 9:54PM

I thought this was Paul's best night.

But he struggled mightily when asked about the problem of the lady who lost her health care and her job. He didn't really have much to say to her personally. Going into the history of the problem didn't redress her problems specifically.

You sound like a complete lunatic too.

Bob Grant| 1.26.12 @ 10:24PM

I agree. The cut and paste material he posts here is a little bent.

Dai Alanye | 1.27.12 @ 12:13AM

This is merely my personal opinion, but to me draftee RonPaul is a chickenhawk. (Minus the hawk part, of course.)

Clint| 1.26.12 @ 10:22PM

You Sound Like The RINO-CINO Faux Conservative Asshat,You Are.

Paul McGrath| 1.26.12 @ 11:18PM

Newt had a chance to talk about his conversion to Roman Catholicism after marrying his current wife, but instead he blathered on about her patronage of the arts. He could have hit a home run with this one. Instead he makes me wonder how sincere about his new religion he truly is.

And he had YET ANOTHER chance when the puerile Blitzer asked them about their religion. Again Newt gave a canned answer. Actually, it was a good answer, but not the one I was looking for.

Fred Flintstein| 1.27.12 @ 2:17AM

@Paul McGrath - Just as he had 3 wives, Newt has had 3 faiths - Lutheran, Southern Baptist and now is Roman Catholic. It's hard for him to keep up, so rather than getting aspects of his various religions confused, he simply avoids mentioning them altogether.

On a related note, I thought that tonight Newt didn't look like he is 68 years old. He looked like he's 78. Not a good thing.

Dipesto| 1.27.12 @ 3:29AM

I have a wish that sometime Woofie B or some other pundit would ask Mitt "Has someone in govt. ever given you any info that you thought was true and turned out to be false?" to see if he learned anything from what happened to his Daddy in '68.

Willis| 1.27.12 @ 7:11AM

"Why would your wife make the best First Lady?"

Easy question for Newt, "Because of the hair."

martin j smith| 1.27.12 @ 8:01AM

Because Wolfe Blister loves Obama and Michell and therefore wants to ask that question. This but one zillions of examples of why this debate arrangement is a fraud. Republican Leadershiut has to go.

Nancy in NC| 1.27.12 @ 10:09AM

I think about 50% of the posters on AS could run a better debate than CNN. The only think worse would be another one by MSNBC or NBC or ABC. Oh hell, they all stink...not much substance, and lots of crap.

Frank Livingston| 1.27.12 @ 1:37PM

I would love to have the discussion on who is our enemy and why!

ayrnieu| 1.27.12 @ 8:23PM

Also: Laura "likes AmeriCorps" Bush; (the threat of) Tipper "Censorship" Gore.

Moderator guidelines instruct them to suggest deception/'hypocrisy' in a candidate, direct candidates attack each other, and then request that a candidate talk about something that nobody cares about. Only their awareness that they can still push these preference too far, and create too undesirable a backlash, guides them to ask questions of any substance.
