David N. Bass notes that Bev Perdue’s decision not to seek a second term as Governor of North Carolina increases the likelihood of a Republican Governor being elected this November.

Well, if North Carolinians are motivated to vote for a Republican Governor chances are they will also be inclined to vote for a Republican President. Needless to say, this is not good news for President Obama.

Obama, of course, carried North Carolina in 2008. But the Tar Heel state has voted Republican in the previous seven presidential elections going back to 1980 and Obama knows this all too well. Why else would Obama single out a single mom who works in Charlotte, North Carolina in his SOTU address? It’s no accident the 2012 DNC Convention is in Charlotte.

Despite Jackie Bray’s good fortune, it is worth noting that hours before the SOTU address, North Carolina released it report stating that its unemployment rate for December 2011 was 9.9%. Let’s just say Governor Perdue’s “mission on jobs for North Carolina” leaves much to be desired. Although the unemployment rate fell by a tenth of a percent, it was in double digits the preceding five months and hasn’t fallen below 9.7% over the past twelve months.

Under those conditiions, President Obama faces an uphill battle in North Carolina but now with a hot gubernatorial race that climb just got a lot steeper. I can’t see North Carolina electing a Republican Governor and still voting for Obama.

If Erskine Bowles (D) decides to run, watch out, he can win over Pat McCory (moderate R). McCory has no primary challenger, it's his turn.

Bowles has national exposure in the Clinton Administration and recently Bowles-Simpson, he understands the fiscal mess and can speak to voters as an adult...let's see who enters the race.

Erskine Bowles is a big government Obama cheerleader. His records are identical to Gov. Perdue, he is just another left wing union thug heck. NC can no longer afford another Democrat. It's time for a GOP governor.

Indy| 1.26.12 @ 3:00PM

The GOP candidate running may win but he is known as a moderate, too bad he doesn't have a primary to challenge him.

Erskine Bowles is a D, I get that but I think he understands the fiscal crisis we face and is not as Left as Obama. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think he was happy the debt commission was brushed aside by Obama, he's still working with the Senate to craft legislative language around the recommendations, I saw a video of him speaking recently. All I am saying is the election will not be an easy one for the GOP to pick up.

Gov . Pardue is a Obama cheerleader and her records being the governor of NC:
-pro abortion
-pro gay marriage
-pro gun control
-pro tax hikes
-pro ObamaCare
She is a Obama-heck, and we must defeat her. She would have been running for second term, she would have been defeated in a landslide.
I hope GOP will take back the governor mansion in 2012.

Purdue is from my area, and is very disliked. Her comment about suspending elections would surely have bit her in the butt if she had ran, plus she has a number of other shady issues. She vetoed our voter ID law and her office is surrounding with scandal. Good riddance.

Michael| 1.26.12 @ 3:17PM

Nancy, can you tell us why you cannot spell "Perdue" but you can recognize a person who plans voter fraud? Can you tell us the ways that you have been harmed by either blacks or Hispanics in 2011?

JmsA| 1.26.12 @ 4:21PM

I can see why you like Perdue; she's not only a leftists' leftist, she wanted to cancel elections.

Michael| 1.26.12 @ 6:34PM

And that will effectively prevent any form of voter fraud, whether the idea of Tea Partyier, Republican or Democrat. Win/Win for every Patriot, eh. I wonder if you fully grasp the governor's point.

JmsA| 1.26.12 @ 6:54PM

She's a leftist elitist. I don't need to know anything else. You obviously haven't lived where there are no free elections. I have. You'll never convince me of anything. I know exactly where she's coming from. She's just another demorat abandoning ship, and you a blind fool for following anyone like that.

JmsA| 1.26.12 @ 7:00PM

What joke, a democrat pretending to oppose voter fraud!

ncatty| 1.26.12 @ 2:17PM

Another in a long line of NC democrat "education governors" bites the dust. What will the children do?
