I am surprised. Both the moderator and romney have served up a couple right over the plate and Gingrich let them go...He ain't stupid...I'm just not seeing what his plan is...thoughts anybody???

How can Newt fight the truth? He was forced out in disgrace by his own Republican members. He was lucky not to go to prison and had to pay a 300 thousand dollar fine. He is unfit for high office and always has been, at least since he was Speaker. Mr. Freddy Mac is unelectable and unacceptable.
Mike 3/505| 1.23.12 @ 9:34PM
looks like Romney woke up. Gingrich needs to find just the right tone to hit back w/o it devolving into the cat fight the liberals want to see.

Feed this one to Newt... someone... please:
"I was hounded out of office by bitterly partisan Democrats filing masses of totally false ethics charges, all abetted by your Establishment Republicans who where just champing at the bit to get at the earmark trough.
And it takes a whopping load of chuzpah to make that false accusation when it comes from a failed liberal governor whose re-elect numbers were so low you'd have been beaten by the Kennedys' pool boy."
It is time to fight. Fight hard.. fight clean.. but FIGHT.

It was fed to him...he didn't swing...he bunted...maybe a base hit. I was disappointed. I was halfway hoping he had, just prior to the debate, posted his Fanny/Freddie work product and the IRS letter exonerating him.

Newt is a typical bully. When someone stands up to them they always cowar. Romney left Newt speechless.
Mike 3/505| 1.23.12 @ 10:28PM
Doug,
Not so. I watched the facial expression...Newt wanted to uncork...he deliberately restrained himself. Watch the body language. Believe me...he is NOT afraid of Romney.
Drek| 1.23.12 @ 10:26PM
Newt is trying to demonstrate that he is in control of his emotions. Everybody is saying he campaigns angry, so he is demonstrating that he can control himself. He's not letting Romney get under his skin.
But personally, I concur, he needed to counterattack.
Drek| 1.23.12 @ 10:27PM
He's trying to act conciliatory, he's trying to reach out to those Romney supporters who are upset that it's looking like Gingrich is going to be the nominee.
I think such a gesture is premature.
In his victory speech the other night in SC, he went out of his way to praise Romney.
This is way too early as yet.
He's not going to earn any plaudits from NR or the likeminded for such highmindedness.
Mike 3/505| 1.23.12 @ 10:30PM
Newt needs to find a "speed" between dead stop and flat out. :-)
Drek| 1.23.12 @ 10:47PM
Concur.
bill| 1.23.12 @ 10:44PM
Newt was impassive, and needs to hit back.
Drek| 1.23.12 @ 10:48PM
It looks like Gingrich made a decision prior to the debate to be agreeable, to be conciliatory, to be unflappable.
But I agree with you Bill; I thought he needed to do more than refer people to a portion of his website that isn't even up yet.
We'll see.

As a southern politician and the home turf, (FL is neighboring to GA) Newt should have shown his compassion, charisma, and wisdom. He answered questions but lacked the spirit that he waged during the two SC debate.
Come on, Newt. Time is running out. Don't let Romney steal the show. Newt was calm and polite, while Romney was desperate, obviously. Neither of them can afford to lose FL.
Interested Conservative| 1.23.12 @ 11:10PM
Not yet. Not yet. There's another debate before the vote. Calm Newt played it well tonight, awaiting what Mitt does before closing the deal.
Mitt may be able to advertise his way into highlighting Newt's flaws, but doing so also disregards why he is worth the vote. AND, if anyone other than Newt starts talking about how rich he is, he'll be swatting flies all over the place. Too confusing.
Serious role reversal, but Newt is a pro, and Mitt may be. It will be interesting to see if Mitt's early Florida voters are enough to give him a lift. I don't know if attacks will get him there alone.
Beat| 1.23.12 @ 11:14PM
I agree with John's need to pass some words to Newt.
Newt, if you hear me, don't believe the criticisms; they come from liberals. They will make you internalize, and think you have a problem that doesn't exist. Don't do it. I beg of you not to believe it. We like you the way you are.
Be yourself, and get back to yourself. John's words were more yours than yours were.
somnolence| 1.23.12 @ 11:26PM
I told someone earlier today on American Spectator that Gingrich was fined $300,000 for lying under oath. I stand by that statement because he admitted himself in a statement that he fibbed to the IRS. Whether he was cleared of the 83 charges later is irrelevant. The very fact they were brought by his co-architects of the 1994 GOP Revolution speaks volumes. And memory loss is so convenient. Just last year in Iowa he was all for mandates, blasting away at Paul Ryan, and in turn, being blasted by Rush. It is preserved for posterity on YOUTUBE if anyone forgot.
Interested conservative| 1.24.12 @ 1:47AM
There is something there, but I think you're missing it.
I'm more interested in the Scooter Libby aspect of the single count, namely, the IRS ultimately ruled in his favor. From my practice with them, that's fairly impressive. I wonder if he ever asked for a refund of the $300k?
somnolence| 1.23.12 @ 11:46PM
He also lied when he said he supported Goldwater. There is an interview on CNN from 1988 in which he said he was a "Rockefeller Republican".
Interested conservative| 1.24.12 @ 1:49AM
They're not mutually exclusive, and this was long before he moved to Georgia and began his career.
His acts as Speaker are for more relevant and worth critique and review.

O.K. O.K. People and politicians are allowed to evolve. Ronald Reagan voted for FDR four times and Truman over Dewey in 1948(Dewey WAS a liberal himself in those times as Bob Taft was "Mr. Conservative").
