Not Much of a Ride

What Utah's ex-governor Jon Huntsman called his "ticket to ride" (borrowing from the Beatles) from New Hampshire to South Carolina has apparently been cancelled.

By Huntsman himself. He is, says this report, withdrawing to endorse Mitt Romney.

The ticket to ride was apparently issued to a "daydream believer." No Monkee-y-ing around.

It often takes several days for a campaign to evaluate its future after a disappointing primary election. There are plenty of people to be consulted -- staff, donors, party leadership, the candidate's family, etc. -- and decisions to be made (including whether to make an endorsement). These are big decisions. Jon Huntsman was right to rally his NH supporters last Tuesday night and to test the waters in SC. Tonight he made the right decision, given his SC poll numbers and lack of fundraising. Many of us will miss him -- this race just became a whole lot less interesting for me.

Jon Huntsman needed a strong second place in NH in order to build upon the momentum that started for him in the final days of the NH campaign. Still, to get 17% of the vote after entering the race as a virtual unknown (and getting little media coverage in recent months) was an accomplishment. Some of us conservatives look forward to seeing Huntsman again in 2016 (if Obama is reelected) or 2020. He is the future of our party. He was by far the best-qualified candidate, and the most electable one against Obama, in this race. It is a shame that many conservatives dismissed him right from the start without doing adequate due diligence of his record. Our loss.

If Obama is reelected, I may move to China.

Ryan| 1.16.12 @ 8:12AM

Nope, we dismissed him because we knew what and who he is.

Crassus,
Remember they asked what country the plane was to take them, and John Cazzale said "Wyoming."

Dear Kate:

Huntsman started his campaign by appealing to moderates, not Conservatives. It is true, he is quite skilled and intelligent, butthat was a strategic error of the first magnitude.

I will play along with the old Rock & Roll pop metaphor. My current favorite, given Mr. Huntsman's assignment as ambassador to China for the Obama administration, would be the Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the Devil".

Romney has apparently offered to pay the debts of another failed candidate. Huntsman and Pawlenty should each have trouble shaving, what with the need to look in the mirror and see a hypocrite,
