As the New Hampshire results roll in and show him batting clean-up among the major Republican candidates, Rick Perry’s press shop emailed a statement:

Tonight’s results in New Hampshire show the race for ‘conservative alternative’ to Mitt Romney remains wide open. I skipped New Hampshire and aimed my campaign right at conservative South Carolina, where we’ve been campaigning hard and receiving an enthusiastic welcome. I believe being the only non-establishment outsider in the race, the proven fiscal and social conservative and proven job creator will win the day in South Carolina.

South Carolina is the next stop. I have a head start here, and it’s friendly territory for a Texas governor and veteran with solid outsider credentials, the nation’s best record of job creation, and solid fiscal, social and Tea Party conservatism.

The trouble, of course, is parlaying a 1 percent showing in New Hampshire into improved numbers in a Southern state where Perry is polling 5 percent.

Perry is done. He should have dropped out after Iowa.

Romney will be done after SC. Welcome to the South, the land of liberty.

bill, is Perry your dad or something? He got 700 votes today. I could get 700 votes. What are smoking?

bill| 1.10.12 @ 10:07PM

Steve, is Obama your cousin? Perry got 700 votes because it's NH, a state with 4 electoral votes. How about SC with 9 electoral votes and FL with 29 electoral votes. Romney will be slaughtered in the South, politically. You watch!
Out there, it's Rick Perry country.

The only guy who can beat Romney and Obama is Ron Paul. He has the best national organization and support in every state. All the rest have been stalking horses for the elites. Romney is just Bush 3 and will be a rotten President, in the unlikely event he is elected.

bill| 1.10.12 @ 9:27PM

Rick Perry has southern heritage and conservative credentials, and can win in SC, even in FL. He needs to redound, revive, reignite his campaign in full swing. If Perry wins in SC, he will win in FL, too. Romney will be derailed and will never recover. Romney cannot win in SC because of his stances in healthcare, abortion, gay marriage, and climate change. Santorum is not a factor because he voted against "right to work state." Gingrich may take the 2nd place in the ballot, and will be a good choice for VP, with Rick Perry. Ron Paul cannot win in SC because of his foreign policy.
Welcome to the South. It's Rick Perry time.

somnolence| 1.10.12 @ 9:34PM

Sean is right. Perry won't gather any more than 5-8% of the vote in S.C.

bill| 1.10.12 @ 9:38PM

That's what they said about Ronald Reagan in 1980. He won SC and the GOP nod.
Rick Perry will win in SC and FL. It's South, the land of liberty. No country for "big government Northeastern liberal RINO" like Romney or Santorum.

Bill...Reagan won New Hampshire...

Perry didn't get 1%...

I liked Perry in the beginning too. I actually had high hopes for him as you do. However, I don't need the media to tell me what I see with my own eyes...

Perry Sucks.

somnolence| 1.10.12 @ 9:58PM

I knew Ronald Reagan, and Rick Perry, you're no Ronald Reagan!

bill| 1.10.12 @ 10:08PM

Rick Perry is 99% Ronald Reagan.

Dai Alanye | 1.11.12 @ 11:00AM

I sympathize with poor old Bill but Perry and Huntsman should drop out ASAP, leaving the more serious candidates to carry on. I suspect both will be embarrassed by the SC outcome unless they are simply looking forward to a subsequent election when either can claim his turn, much like Dole and McCain.

Not only that but after IA and NH, Perry and the rest of the anybody-but-Romney crowd is going to have a much harder time raising money.

Personally:

I’m not supporting going along to get along with liberals and progressives
I’m not supporting “investing” something less than trillions to combat “Climate Change”
I’m not supporting construction of a fence in the middle of the Rio Grande and in the face of eminent domain court battles
I’m not supporting tinkering around the edges and papering over the problems of Social Security and Medicare.

I will be supporting the Candidate with effective Conservative Executive Experience.

I am supporting securing the border with strategic fencing, drones, electronic surveillance and boots on the ground
I am supporting a reining in the Bureaucracies, from a perspective of experience with and appreciation for the impact of their excesses and perversions.
I am supporting a serious assessment and much needed reforms or Social Security and Medicare

I am for a President who would:

Have a tax structure that’s fair, and as low as you can have it, and still deliver the services that the people require.
Have a regulatory climate that is fair, predictable.
Have a federal government that focuses on its constitutional obligations

and has a record that demonstrates success from embracing these approaches.
