The Spectacle Blog

Here are my final thoughts on the New Hampshire GOP debate which aired this morning on NBC's Meet the Press and moderated by David Gregory.

Jon Huntsman - I think this was his best debate. His answers were full of sobriety instead of snark. The highlight of his debate was his exchange with Romney over his service as Ambassador to China. Huntsman said, "I was criticized by Mitt Romney for putting my country first." When Romney countered that it would have been preferable had Huntsman stood for people with conservative principles and not called President Obama "a remarkable leader", Huntsman fired back, "The nation is divided by attitudes like that," which earned him warm applause. It's the sort of language which resonates with New Hampshire voters. Whether it will resonate enough for Granite state to vote for him remains to be seen. But I have a feeling Huntsman will exceed expectations in New Hampshire.

Rick Santorum - He went on the offensive against Romney from the outset and got the better of the exchange between the two on why Romney didn't seek re-election in Massachusetts. His performance was far crisper than in last night's debate. Santorum might not win New Hampshire but I think this will certainly help his final tally.

Mitt Romney - Despite being upbraided early in the debate by Santorum, Romney had an otherwise solid debate performance. He also got the better of Newt in an exchange over SuperPAC attacks ads towards the end of the debate. Frankly, it would be a complete shock if he weren't to win Tuesday's primary. However, if he wins it by less than ten points, it would represent a setback for Romney thus allowing the seeds of doubt to germinate in South Carolina.

Ron Paul - A much better debate performance than last night. Of course, he always performs better when he doesn't talk about foreign policy or keeps such talk to a minimum.

Newt Gingrich - He got in some early shots at Romney and had yet another crowd pleasing moment with his blistering critique of the EPA. However Romney got the better of him during their exchange on the SuperPAC attack ads. He had no answer for Romney when he pointed that some aspects of the ads were true.

Rick Perry - He once again made the most of the limited time allotted to him effectively portraying himself as a Washington outsider, as a candidate who has not been part of the problem in Washington. With Bachmann out of the race, he has taken it upon himself to carry the Tea Party mantel and calling President Obama a socialist. This might not do him well in New Hampshire but he isn't going anywhere and it could prove fatal to Rick Santorum's aspirations in South Carolina. When the candidates were asked which three programs they would eliminate, Perry drew laughter when he said Commerce, Education and Energy. The question is are audiences laughing with him or are they laughing at him. If it's the former then he made the right decision to stay and fight. But if it's the latter then he has effectively handed the nomination to Mitt Romney.

The next GOP debate is scheduled to take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday, January 16th and it will air on the Fox News Channel at 9 p.m.

" Gingrich Super PAC to attack Romney for Bain Capital work?

The effort to derail Mitt Romney’s presidential quest heightened dramatically on Friday when a super PAC associated with Newt Gingrich outbid all comers for the rights to a scathing 30-minute attack video depicting Romney as a greedy, job-killing corporate raider “more ruthless than Wall Street.”

In a season filled with negative ads and rhetorical crossfire, the striking feature of the film, aside from its mini-documentary length, is its authorship. The film was made by Jason Killian Meath, a former associate of Romney’s top strategists, Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer. Meath had worked for the Romney campaign in 2008, creating much of the ad content for that failed effort. He left Stevens and Schriefer’s firm, SSG, in 2010. Meath declined to comment on his project, referring inquiries to the pro-Gingrich PAC Winning Our Future…

“A story of greed,” the narrator intones. “Playing the system for a quick buck. A group of corporate raiders, led by Mitt Romney. More ruthless than Wall Street. For tens of thousands of Americans, the suffering began when Mitt Romney came to town.”

No one will give two cents for that ad. It's no only misleading, it will backfire on Gingrich in many ways.

Clint: Newt Gingrich;s campaign superpact was given 5 million dollars by Sheldon Adelson the rabid zionist billionaire who is funder of the crazy West Bank settlers. How is he as an extremist Israeli citizen able to stick his nose in the American political campaign?

Jack in Wi.| 1.8.12 @ 2:44PM

Newt Gingrich was given at least 5 million dollars by the crazed wing of the Zionist lobby. Newt is an invented conservative and enemy of everything America stands for. The same goes for the other chickenhawk extremist Rick Santorum. They are both bought and paid for. Check out Newt Gingrich and his ties to the lunatic wing in Israel and it's chief funder Israeli gambling billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

George Will, "Today, we have a very different kind of foreign policy. It’s called Wilsonian. And the premise of the Bush Doctrine is that America must spread democracy, because our national security depends upon it. And America can spread democracy. It knows how. It can engage in national building. This is conservative or not?"

William F. Buckley, " It’s not at all conservative. It’s anything but conservative. It’s not conservative at all, inasmuch as conservatism doesn’t invite unnecessary challenges. It insists on coming to terms with the world as it is …”

Who agreed to all these debates? And who agreed to let them be moderated by these liberal hacks?
Would someone please knock the Republican Establishment along the head and put some sanity into them?

Why don't you get creative and think of some new ways to reach the public? A debate on CSPAN with some conservative moderators like Michelle Malkin. Or some web only debates for the techies?

You know that their ilk will hammer you about social issues: abortion and gay marriage. They will protray you as unenlightened cave men. Stop enough already!! You know they are not going to ask about the debt and the deficit.

RJ| 1.8.12 @ 4:31PM

Your are absolutely right.

The candidates need to remember, the public's primary concern is the economy and the loss of freedom imposed on us by a corrupt government. The media very much wants to change the subject to something else, like gay marriage. If the campaign is about the economy their candidate, Obama, will lose.

Even if the candidates are stuck with the debate format for the rest of the debate schedule, they should quickly dismiss the off-the-wall questions and spend their time on economic issues.

The truth about Santorum:

He routinely voted for tax increases to fund healthcare, supported expansions of the welfare state, supported the creation of new entitlements, opposed free trade, filibustered the National Right to Work Act, opposed repeal or even waiver of the Davis-Bacon Act, supported the Bridge to Nowhere even at the expense of rebuilding the Gulf Coast post Katrina, and helped pass all those travesties of the Bush Administration conservatives routinely lament including No Child Left Behind and Medicare Part D as well as being perfectly fine with Harriet Miers.

Santorum is as "big government" RINO as Romney.

Rick Perry is the most viable candidate.
Please help Rick Perry win the GOP nod.

Bob Grant| 1.8.12 @ 1:09PM

If and when Perry proves he can string a thought longer than 30 seconds together I'll consider him.

Also, his foreign policy answers last night were just as frightening as Ron Paul's, for different reasons.

I'll give him credit, however, for putting in another solid performance. Nothing to write home about but solid for his standards.

bill| 1.8.12 @ 1:20PM

Rick Perry is articulate but he was not given enough time to express his views on issues. He's great on foreign policy, I'll give him a "A" on that.
Romney and Santorum are both "big government RINO." They are sabotaging and helping Obama get re-elected.
Newt Gingrich is great.
I hope Newt and Perry do well in SC.

Nite| 1.9.12 @ 12:18PM

You are correct. The liberal media is trying to sideline Perry because that is truly who Obama fears. Perry has been fighting with Obama for years because the EPA is trying to destroy the industry in TX.

bill| 1.8.12 @ 1:17PM

The truth about Mitt Romney:

Romney is for

-abortion
-gay marriage
-pull out troops from Afghanistan
-individual mandate
-cap and trade
-RomneyCare
-card-check
-reducing defence budget

Romney may buy NH with money but he cannot win in SC and FL. Rick Perry will win in SC and FL, and get the GOP nod. Santorum voted for raising the debt celling for 5 times, and voted against "right to work state." He cannot win in NH, SC, or FL. He'll be out after FL primary. Gingrich has a lot of baggage, going nowhere. Forget about Huntsman.

Sandy| 1.8.12 @ 1:22PM

So many of you enjoy pretending...
You would do better to be honest and declare youself as a democrat and stop the charade.

bill| 1.8.12 @ 2:28PM

I'm a Reaganite conservative. There's only one conservative candidate in the GOP race: Rick Perry. Romney, Santorum, Huntsman, Gingrich are all "big government RINOs."

Sandy| 1.8.12 @ 1:21PM

I felt that Huntsman should NOT have accepted Obama's offer to be ambassador to China, also.
Even though he is representing the people of America, he is still standing in for our leader who is a Marxist dictator...
I would have refused the offer.

Dai Alanye| 1.8.12 @ 6:12PM

Huntsman portrays his "service to America" as a personal sacrifice. Acting as Ambassador in an exotic country is the kind of "sacrifice" millions of citizens might wish to undergo.

His continual bringing up his sons' service in the Navy is irrelevant and disgusting. The sons aren't running for office. This is on a par, if the contrary, with Ron Paul's attack on Huntsman for adopting foreign children. Leave the families out of it!

bill| 1.8.12 @ 8:35PM

Huntsman is another Herman Cain, running for office just to get a spotlight on the prime time Cable. Cain is a Fox News contributor, appearing in many shows frequently. Thanks to politics. It brings fame and money.
Cain is a shame. Huntsman is disgrace.

JimH| 1.9.12 @ 1:51PM

I think his Mandarin phrase translates as: Please pass the sweet and sour shrimp.

Margie| 1.8.12 @ 6:35PM

So true. How could ANY conservative serve under the unrepentant Marxist?

No one can serve two Masters!!

Bob K.| 1.8.12 @ 7:02PM

Nobody becomes an Ambassador to a major power like China unless (1) he or she is a very high ranking diplomat or (2) is at least a multi-millionaire who can be of use to the President. Huntsman qualifies in the 2nd instance.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....story.html

The Huntsman Corporation has a huge investment in China's Chemical Industry and Huntsman used his 2 year period as Ambassador there to increase his family's fortune.

Here is the Corporations footprint in China.

http://www.huntsman.com/china/.....ageID=6750

It's a great American corporation alright! Except it does more business in China than it does in the USA!

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 1.8.12 @ 1:40PM

Actually, Huntsman's comment was a sound bite which sounds like it must have come directly from the White House.

Romney's observation was an actual fact and facts are not dividing the nation. Alinsky type comments like the one made by Huntsman are dividing the country.

And if Huntsman wants to imply that he joined the Obama administration to "heal the wounds" or whatever let him explain it.

Romney's biggest mistake was in not responding immediately and stating, "Give us one example of his great leadership on employment or job creation or in the spending of 768 billion with few results."

In the offing, a few questions were good but most were ridiculous and had little to do with the nation's future.

The only thing missing was the Macarena song playing in the background.

Csey Abell| 1.8.12 @ 1:53PM

"Santorum might not win New Hampshire but I think this will certainly help his final tally."

Yeah, I think it's a safe bet that Santorum won't win NH. Today's latest Suffolk/7 News tracking poll: Romney 35, Paul 20, Huntsman 11, Gingrich 9, Santorum 8, Perry 1.

At least he'll beat Perry. But a fifth-place finish for Santorum is not out of the question. Still, the Spectator can be happy that Romney's 35 is the lowest he's scored in any NH poll for a while.

Why anybody thinks Santorum will even be remotely competitive in libertarian New Hampshire is beyond me. I know the Spectator is in love with the guy - no gay marriage overtones intended - but come on, things are looking grim for the anti-birth-control crusader.

bill| 1.8.12 @ 8:40PM

Santorum is a "big government RINO." He supported

-unfunded Medicare Part D
-NCLB
-against "right to work state", pro-union
-raising debt selling 5 times
-Arlene Spector
-expansion of welfare

Rick Perry is a Washington outsider and far more electable than Santorum.

Nite| 1.9.12 @ 12:20PM

Santorum has not money nor organization to conduct a national campaign. He has also not made it on a large number of ballots.

Casey Abell| 1.8.12 @ 4:27PM

I'm crossposting back and forth all over here. From NRO...

By the way, I think the you-didn't-run-for-reelection charge against Romney is maybe the weakest attack you could make against him. After all, Gingrich never ran for reelection to the House after Republicans forced him out as Speaker. Santorum never ran for anything in Pennsylvania after his crusher in 2006. So what?

In NH Gingrich and Santorum should be hitting Romney on economic issues [from the right, not the left], not some silliness like everybody's election records. I know political junkies like us are interested in that stuff, but most people could not care less.

Clint| 1.8.12 @ 6:59PM

Uh Oh !

It's Startin' .

" Fleeing U.S. Prosecution

In fact, it was prosecution, not persecution, that drove Romney's great-grandfather Miles from the U.S.

Miles Park Romney led his family south of the border to escape imprisonment for polygamy, which Mormons called "plural marriage" and which was banned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the late 19th century.

When Mitt Romney's father George (1907-1995) was a small child, the Mexican Revolution broke out, and the family fled Colonia Dublan, a colony in the north, back to the U.S.

Many of the Romneys, however, chose to remain behind, and most of them are dual citizens.

"We certainly have a love for both countries," Leighton Romney said. "I think that having two countries that you love and two countries that you can serve or be a beneficiary of their service is a great thing."

The Mexican branch of the family is very supportive of their famous relative, and hope Mitt Romney will be more open about his Mormon faith and his Mexican heritage as the race goes on. The GOP candidate has never visited his family across the border, but Leighton Romney feels he and the family have nothing to be ashamed of.

"I don't think that any candidate for any office would shy away from their religion," he said. "I think it's something to stand up and be proud of."

OryGun| 1.9.12 @ 12:45AM

I would say a polygamist is higher on the social roles than same sex. At least they have an idea what all the parts are for and where they go as nature intended. The libtards are on here in full force trying to create a hate fest for their leader the big O. Go Republicans.

Allan| 1.9.12 @ 9:19AM

It seemed that Newt made his case about the PAC adds. He basically said that, sure, Romney is not controlling the content of the adds but is conveniently not distancing himself from them either. Now Newt is giving Romney his own medicine by advertising for the movie coming out about Bain Capital, which, like Romney, he does not control the content of, but is happy to reference. He made sure everyone knew he had not seen the movie but hoped is was accurate. Romney does not like being the object of his own tactics.

Dai Alanye| 1.9.12 @ 10:35AM

This ever-repeated propaganda by the Clintster has rised to wild heights of ridiculosity. But maybe it works. Let's see.

These Are The Know-Nothing Flunkie Stooges Who Gave Us The Draftee Of Libertarianism Ron Paul, Who's Never passed A Real Law In All His Decades In Congress, But Who Voted For Invading Afghanistan Rather Than Face The Wrath Of The American People By Keeping True To His Principles.

Now The Paulites Are Trying To Give Us Foreign Policy Nostrums, Cynical Flip-Flops On Immigration, Double Talk On The Economy, No Answer To The Problem Of Entitlements, Scurrilous Newsletters, Lies About His Competitors, And Gobbledegook On Every Issue.

The Tea Party Rebellion Is Being Grabbed By Ron Paul On The East Coast And Elsewhere In A Cynical Attempt To Advance Himself Politically.

martin j smith| 1.9.12 @ 10:41AM

Foreign policy and national security should be significant in debates more than they are so far. It is about our economy in this area as well. Ron Paul once clearly understood will be viewed as irrespo0nsible just as Obama is. In fact Paul is Obama in the area of foreign policy. Why vote for another Obama ?

NotPropagandized| 1.9.12 @ 5:56PM

As a sympathizer with the TeaParty movement and a desire to reject Republicans and Democrats who worship at the throne of Washington DC, it seems evident that TeaParty presidential hopes are in vain. Sooooo, it seems that the best strategy is to keep pounding at Congress with new TeaParty candidates to replace the corrupt Reps and Sens AND the corruptees-in-progress that were sent in last time. It is theoretically possible to make any president a lame duck if there are enough sensible congresspeople to govern responsibly.

By the way, does anybody notice that ALL of:
"Obama Campaign" and
"Obama Speech" and
"Obama Press Conference" and
"Obama Media Interview"
"Obama Rally" and
"Obama Townhall"
mean exactly,
"Propaganda"?
