Ron Paul just called Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks as his heroes and described them as libertarians. I think this is the first time King and Parks have been described as libertarians. Mind you this is the same Ron Paul who says he would have opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Ron Paul praised Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks for using the libertarian priciples of non-violent resistence. It is the priciples that Ghandi, among others, used when confronted with force that can not be challenged any other way. It was what brought down the Soviet Union's empire. Remember all those marchers back in the 80's and early 90's all over Eastern Europe. The world was changed forever by Jesus Christ who had no armies. Non violent resistence is the great Christian principle of Jesus himself. It is so powerful that it can change countries and the hearts of men. Peace, justice, love of neighbor, and charity is what Jesus is all about. Non violent resistence trys to reach the hearts and minds of the people doing the persecuting, so that they change one heart at a time.

If Ron Paul supports nonviolence, why doesn't he support nonviolence against all? He has been very clear that violence against Muslims is wrong, and the fault of Christians. But he never defends Christians or says violence against Christians is wrong? When a Muslim in Ron Paul's home state killed people on a military base, Ron Paul REFUSED to blame the culprit, because he was Muslim. The funny thing, is not a single Ron Paul supporter has denied this, they just say it doesn't matter. Ron Paul is running to be president of all Americans, not just Muslims.

Uh, Mike, Paul was against the Neoconservative call to kill Orthodox Serbians (Bill Kristol called for crushing Christian skulls famously) and Paul was against toppling the secular regime in Iraq and installing an Islamist one that would surely destroy the Christian community there.

Paul was also against toppling the secular regime in Egypt and against the on-going action to destabilize Syria (actions supported by neoconservatives) which will surely be ever more bad news for Christians.

Basically, you are confused.

Jack I am also a Ron Paul supportor but I need to correct you about the Soviet Union. Non-violent protests didn't bring down the Soviet Union and neither did Ronald Reagan's Star Wars. What brought down the Soviet Union was it unsustainable economic policies.

" Gingrich Super PAC to attack Romney for Bain Capital work?

The effort to derail Mitt Romney’s presidential quest heightened dramatically on Friday when a super PAC associated with Newt Gingrich outbid all comers for the rights to a scathing 30-minute attack video depicting Romney as a greedy, job-killing corporate raider “more ruthless than Wall Street.”

In a season filled with negative ads and rhetorical crossfire, the striking feature of the film, aside from its mini-documentary length, is its authorship. The film was made by Jason Killian Meath, a former associate of Romney’s top strategists, Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer. Meath had worked for the Romney campaign in 2008, creating much of the ad content for that failed effort. He left Stevens and Schriefer’s firm, SSG, in 2010. Meath declined to comment on his project, referring inquiries to the pro-Gingrich PAC Winning Our Future…

“A story of greed,” the narrator intones. “Playing the system for a quick buck. A group of corporate raiders, led by Mitt Romney. More ruthless than Wall Street. For tens of thousands of Americans, the suffering began when Mitt Romney came to town.”

Can you give us any numbers to support your assertion? The numbers I checked show Ron Paul is in the top 5 biggest spenders in Congress. He actually encourages pork, while railing against it. Paul makes Tip O'Neill look like a libertarian. We can't afford to have a tax and spend maniac like Paul as president.

You may yell at me, but I bet you won't show any proof I'm wrong. You probably don't even realize how much you've been fooled.

Well it's true they weren't libertarians, King specifically was a Social Democrat. Now he could argue that they were civil libertarians which was true in the sense that they fought for the rights and liberties of African-Americans.

"Mind you this is the same Ron Paul who says he would have opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act."

So did Goldwater, and the libertarian stance on the issue, (which was also the conservative stance on the issue back in 64), was that the law violated property rights. This stance didn't make Goldwater anti-Civil Rights, (his record in Arizona and the Senate proves he's wasn't), it just meant he disagreed with this particular approach to protecting the civil rights of African-Americans.

Praising the heroic actions of historic figures does not mean you have to agree with everything single approach took to accomplish their goals. I like Dr. King I appreciate what he did for this country, for my fellow Americans, and myself. I am a Christian, an American, a Conservative with some libertarian-leanings, and I'm also black. And I know this difference between the conservative/libertarian against the 64 bill vs. Dixiecrat argument.

I'm not a Ron Paul fan, but there are far better arguments against Paul's candidacy than this one. His disagreement with a law that was passed in 1964, that he has very little power to change is of little concern to me. His foreign policy views, and some of his economic views are what concern me. Focus on those, not the petty stuff.

Pete| 1.7.12 @ 11:40PM

The arguments against the civil rights laws were that it violated the constitution. Most Republicans are reluctant to admit that they did. They violated states rights, freedom of association and individual rights. It is quite likely that withing the civil rights laws, segregation, jim crow laws and open housing would have happened anyway naturally.

Imissbuckley| 1.7.12 @ 11:49PM

"It is quite likely that withing the civil rights laws, segregation, jim crow laws and open housing would have happened anyway naturally."

I'm not gonna go that far. However it is true that many conservatives and Republican saw the 64 bill as violation of the Constitution. Property Rights, states rights, etc.

" George Will, "Today, we have a very different kind of foreign policy. It’s called Wilsonian. And the premise of the Bush Doctrine is that America must spread democracy, because our national security depends upon it. And America can spread democracy. It knows how. It can engage in national building. This is conservative or not?"

William F. Buckley, " It’s not at all conservative. It’s anything but conservative. It’s not conservative at all, inasmuch as conservatism doesn’t invite unnecessary challenges. It insists on coming to terms with the world as it is …”

Martin King a libertarian? He was a communist, plain and simple. Of course no one is supposed to go back and read anything he wrote or said, we're just supposed to kneel at his altar and accept his deification.

Red Phillips | 1.8.12 @ 9:18AM

Ron Paul should oppose the Civil Rights Act because it is grossly unconstitutional as Barry Goldwater and many other conservatives at the time understood. It is a sad indictment of the sorry state of modern conservatism that opposition to the Civil Rights Act is considered a black mark rather than a badge of honor.

That said, and I'm a Ron Paul supporter, calling MLK and Rosa Parks libertarians is blatant PC pandering. MLK and Rosa Parks were hard core leftists and everyone at the time understood that. But it’s no worse than the mental gymnastics display by professional conservatives every MLK Day when they try to remake MLK into some sort of "color blind" conservative. People can support King or not support King, but they should at least be honest with their terminology. King was a hard leftist and a Christian heretic. His plagiarized doctoral dissertation was full of heresy.
