Not that anyone paid it much mind, Rick Perry’s Iowa sign-off last night was of a piece with his goofy, if not daft performance in the Republican primary. So it’s not surprising that no one’s really noticed that his fifth place showing in Iowa ended his undefeated streak in political elections. And no one is much surprised that instead of withdrawing as he essentially signaled he would he now says he’s going to compete in South Carolina. My only question is whether there’s any politician anywhere who would have included such a tribute to himself as Perry did when, in his short-lived valedictory last night, he read from devoted Perry volunteer Colt Smith’s letter to him, which included these words: “He said, ‘I know you were a good man, but I never realized what a great man you were.’” Naturally, Perry teared up as he read this testimony to his own greatness.

But again, who could hold it against him? Certainly it was preferable on the likeability scale than Newt Gingrich’s utterly classless promise to kick around Newt Romney all he can until there’s nothing left of the GOP’s chances this year. To think that just a few weeks ago Newt was preaching Republican unity against the one opponent that matters, Barack Obama. At this rate, Rick Perry will finish well ahead of him in South Carolina.

Good Lord. We need to cull this group. AND NOW!!

At least Michelle had the smarts and decency to leave with her dignity intact. Perry and Gingrich, I'm afraid, will have crossed that line and perhaps take others with them.

Perry - Leave NOW!
Gingrich - Leave and help out Santorum!
Huntsman - Who cares what you do.

Nite| 1.4.12 @ 7:46PM

Why should Perry leave? He has the money and organization for a national campaign. Santorum and Newt don't. I don't want to vote for Romney and neither do a lot of other voters.

Barbara| 1.5.12 @ 4:45PM

Rick Perry is a true conservative & fighter for States' Rights & The Constitution. So what if he doesn't speak like a "Harvard" snob. I have seen him in action since I live in Texas. His experience as Governor of a big state, creating 40% of all job in this country mean something. He is the son of tenant farmers & a former Air Force pilot. Give this true patriot a chance.

LarryK| 1.4.12 @ 2:55PM

Cull the group?

How about Romney.

He will never never never get my vote for President!

Barbara| 1.5.12 @ 4:48PM

And just who do want? You sound like a closed-minded person or a lib.

bill| 1.4.12 @ 2:56PM

Santorum con compete in NH and SC, but will come up short in FL because he lacks resource and organization. Rick Perry can go head to head with Romney in SC and FL, because Perry has money and manpower. Romney will get a free pass in NH because he was the governor of neighboring state MA. It ain't over yet.

Grzmlyk| 1.4.12 @ 3:14PM

Gee, who woulda thunk Newt would go back on his word? My question is, has he ever kept his word?

I hear Perry is going off to learn how to string two sentences together, and how to spell "cat" without being spotted the "c" and the "t."

Gee, what happened to that great pool of potential nominees we supposedly had arrayed before us? Now we've got Mitt Romney, who, if he gets elected, will kick the can down the road with great panache.

I like Santorum, but since he's religious, the mainstream media will paint him as the secular Satan if he gets the nomination.

And the sheep voters will do what the mainstream media tells them to do.

4 more years of Obama vs. 4 years of Mitt. Is there really much of a difference?

Bob Grant| 1.4.12 @ 4:41PM

"4 more years of Obama vs. 4 years of Mitt. Is there really much of a difference?"

....let's get real about this. Of course there would be a difference between an Obama administration and a Romney one. Just like there would have been a difference between a McCain administration and an Obama one.

McCain, as much as I despise him, would not have shoved national healthcare, a destructive financial reform bill, a massive wasteful stimulus bill, hyper regulation, or suppressed our domestic energy industry.

Come on, let's don't overplay that hand.

kingsmill| 1.4.12 @ 3:24PM

I lived under a Mitt regime for 4 years in MA. He's got nothing. If he's elected (doubtful since his MO is re-invent himself to suit media demands, which won't work against the BHO-Axelrod-media offensive), he'll put on a show that he wants to actually do something. He will quickly buckle and follow the dictates of the establishment.

Bob Grant| 1.4.12 @ 5:07PM

I've got a question for you, being a resident of MA under Romney.

How far would governor Romney gotten vis-a-vis pushing a conservative agenda? ...rendered a lame duck? Maybe he just worked with what he had and was happy with "half a loaf"?

Who's to say a moderate governor Romney WON"T become a conservative President Romney if given more latitude to govern?

MikeN| 1.4.12 @ 3:31PM

Rick Perry should compete in New Hampshire. I'm surprised he doesn't think he could do well there, with his general conservatism. He is not Mike Huckabee. Just run his opening campaign speech of I'll strive make Washington matter as little as possible in your lives.

bill| 1.4.12 @ 4:52PM

you made a good point. Kudos.

Margie| 1.4.12 @ 5:49PM

""He said, 'I know you were a good man, but I never realized what a great man you were.'" Naturally, Perry teared up as he read this testimony to his own greatness."

Haha, that is funny.

Vlady, I love how you write, and not just because of that but generally so.

And hey~ if Perry can come out 5th here, who's to say he couldn't pull the nomination off?

Compared to Newt and the rest of the candidates, I am wondering if he is not the most conservative of them??

We shall see as things take their order, which will really pull ahead as there is still time for that to happen.

People have been waking up to the nightmare which is Obama and they don't like what he's "given them~ which is a country coming to ruin under his "rule" in no time flat.

It seems to me as I said in another thread, that they are NOT going to be voting for the candidate wanted by the Establishment Repubs~ (Romney), and they've let us know that via Iowa.

We shall see.

Bob Grant| 1.4.12 @ 9:01PM

Marge,

We will all rally around the nominee when we consider the ramifications for not doing so. I know all of this talk about doing something drastic is just primary "Bravado Talk".

We will coalesce and support whomever it may be...with the exception of Ron Paul.

Barbara| 1.5.12 @ 4:55PM

People need to do their homework & not rely on the media. I research candidates before making judgements based on biases of any media liberal or conservative. Having lived 8 years in Texas, I've seen firsthand how hard Perry works for the tenth amendment & the Constitution. He's a plain spoken man. Give him a chance & really check out his accomplishments.

bobmontgomery| 1.5.12 @ 12:03AM

Well, Wlady, you moan about Newt going after your Messiah, Mitt, 'the last great white hope' of the ever-lovin' East Coast Republican Elite Party, and then in fine 11th commandment form, you proceed to pull out a one-liner from a Perry event. Was there a context? Did Perry make a disclaimer afterward? We'll never hear it from you, will we? Why don't you say 'Texas swagger' a few times? We haven't heard that one for a few days. Say 'lacks gravitas' for good measure, like the cool kids at the Washington Post do. Shame you don't have Sarah Palin to kick around, isn't it?

bobmontgomery| 1.5.12 @ 12:15AM

Yeah, and Wlady, thanks for going to 'Crooks and Liars" to get that for us. While at the site, we viewed the other 'hate Perry' diatribe, as well as the video, which DID have some context. Do you elitists in the Establishment community have your OWN JournOlist, Wlady, where you discuss how to savage people, or does this hatred of people out in America just come naturally?

Michael Tomlinson| 1.5.12 @ 2:48AM

Santorum's virulent attacks on Senator DeMint and defense of earmarks have doomed him in SC. His big union votes against right to work will also kill his aspirations in the South. Santorum is as done as Ron "Il Duce" Paul he just won't accept it.

Cull this heard and let it be between a real conservative (Perry) and moderate (Romney). Then we can get down to defeating our own Hugo Chavez and wannabe dictator Barack "In the Closet" Obama.

PCP Smoker| 1.5.12 @ 9:28PM

Are you the M. Tomlinson who used to be the head of PBS during the Bush years? If you are, you did a hell of a job!

PCP Smoker| 1.5.12 @ 7:20AM

I'm voting for Obama before I vote for another Ma republic. Bring on socialism.

NotPropagandized| 1.5.12 @ 11:51AM

Losing an Iowa Caucus is not losing an election, dummy. Perry lost Houston in a handful of votes in 2010 but he was re-elected Governor of Texas. By the time this election is over, your giddiness may be justified. But not yet.

PCP Smoker| 1.5.12 @ 9:30PM

Agree. As long as he has TX in his back pocket, there is no reason for him to drop out of the race. I do want him to start speaking from the heart. If Newt and Santo can destroy Romney, it will be a conservative's dream.
