The Spectacle Blog

If Rick Santorum comes in first or a strong second tomorrow in Iowa, the establishment media will fall all over themselves “explaining” that it was all those “social conservatives” in Iowa who did it for him. Certainly, his consistency on social issues will merit a great deal of the credit. But that’s hardly the whole story. As Rich Lowry at National Review has pointed out, one reason Santorum is “connecting” is that, alone among the candidates, he so seamlessly ties the “family issues” of “social” policy into the “family issues” of economic policy — in short, he shows how they are connected. He has always done as much. That’s why he always did so well in a tough district and a tough state in Pennsylvania, where he “connected” well in four straight races with blue-collar voters, or, put another way, with “Reagan Democrats” as well as Republicans.

In truth, he’s been solid across the board, and, again, rather seamless in his ability to tie everything together coherently. Herewith, then, my earlier columns on those Santorum issue positions: on economics, on foreign and defense policy, and on the role of faith in politics. And, despite the supposed boldness by Newt Gingrich on the subject of judges, the truth is that it is Santorum who has long been a signal leader in the fight for a better judiciary, as I explained here:

Also, almost unique among Republican senators not on the Judiciary Committee, Santorum fully grasped the importance of federal judgeships and fought hard on judicial nominations when others weaseled out. His staff usually provided more of an entrée to conservative judicial enthusiasts than did the staffs of the Judiciary Committee or the party’s Senate leader. And Santorum understood that judicial fights aren’t just important in principle, but good politics too, because the public agrees with conservatives on judges.

Back in July of 2010, I foresaw a path to victory for Santorum, for many of these reasons, and because he had won against the odds before:

[C]onservatives do themselves and their cause a huge disservice if they don’t take a Rick Santorum candidacy seriously. It would be crazy not to acknowledge that the odds seem long. But he has beaten the odds, repeatedly, before, and he knows how to leverage public opinion for conservative ends. “I’m someone who moves the ball,” he told me. “I get a lot of stuff done.”

Iowa’s voters may give him a major boost in proving he still can do it.

And if Santorum were by some miracle to get the nomination, do you have a theory about how he might win against Obama?

Dai Alanye | 1.2.12 @ 8:57PM

I suspect that having a few clues about what makes an economy work, something Obama doesn't have, might help Santorum take him. Then again he might contrast his work ethic with that of Obama, who must be the most lazy, disconnected President of the modern era. Of course, being in favor of life rather than protecting infanticide (check Obama's record in Illinois) should also assist our man Rick.

We Pennsylvanian Conservatives Helped Hand Little Ricky His Ass In 2006.
Santorum Got Paid Back, with 41% of the vote to Casey's 59%,the largest margin of defeat ever for an incumbent Republican Senator in Pennsylvania.

That's What Ricky Got For Proppin' Up The RINO-CINO Poster Boy, Arlen Specter In Our 2004 Senate Primary Against Our Guy,Pat Toomey.

Now, Pat Toomey Is Our Tea Party Senator And Specter & Santorum Are Out.

If He Runs Again In Pennsylvania He'll Get Tossed Again.

Bob Grant| 1.2.12 @ 7:24PM

Clint,

You know, Senator Rick Santorum's vote against Obamacare could have been the swing vote, but maybe you secretly wanted Obamacare passed AND a second term for Teh One.

Perhaps a crypto-Socialist in our midst?

MikeG| 1.2.12 @ 7:41PM

Clint, you moron. If Santorum would have won in 06 we would now have Santorum and Toomey instead of Bob Casey, a 100% Obama vote.
Nice going.
You actually happy we have Casey instead of Santorum?
Are you going to vote and support the Republican nominee if it isn't Paul? Yes or No.

Bob Grant| 1.2.12 @ 7:52PM

His post say's it all. He and his ilk take delight in sabotaging republican candidates not to their liking.

He's willing to usher in obama in '12 just because of some stupid hard on he has for Mitt Romney.

Who's worse? A smelly occupy wallstreeter or a paultard?

Oldefarte| 1.3.12 @ 3:58PM

Clit, ya boy Paulie is anti-Catholic, since his liberitarian view on homosexuality is completely contrary to the Catholic Church's official position on same!!!!!!!!!

Bob Grant| 1.3.12 @ 12:01AM

Marge, it was a trick question.

Occupy Wallstreeter's are harmless children. Paultards, dangerous because of the sheer number of imbeciles supporting him. Also in their jihadi-like behavior of sabotaging republics chances of retaking the whitehouse.

Margie| 1.3.12 @ 12:55AM

You can think the OWSERS are harmless children all you want but that doesn't make it so.

SOME are. Just like SOME Paul-bots are just plain dumb, but I sure as heck wouldn't want to be anywhere near them physically, that's all I've got to say!

Oldefarte| 1.3.12 @ 4:01PM

Apparently not Sean Hannity as well, since a typical group of anarcists-radical Paulistas chased him down the street waving Paulie Boy campaign signs!!!!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 1.4.12 @ 10:52AM

BG: I respectfully disagree that OWS are 'harmless children'. These are the grandchildren of the Kent State crowd, the Hanoi Jane's, the Bill Ayer's, the Jeremiah Wrights, etc of this nation. Those 'harmless children' caused the election of Obama in 2008. Those 'harmless children' are annually exited by academia liberal domestic terrorist professors to go forth into the streets and create havoc in Chicago community organizing, Acorn fashion. They are far, far from 'harmless children', and the current/historical problems in this country result from those of us in the mainstream, middle class of ignoring them and/or taking them lightly!!!!!!!

Santorum represents everything that's wrong with the Republican Party. He's the Catholic George Bush. In other words a disaster.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....r_embedded

Margie| 1.2.12 @ 9:26PM

Who cares what his Religion is?
He's for a strong military defense, a strong economy, lower taxes, and in favor of decreasing regulations on business, isn't he?

He isn't running to become Pope, and thankfully couldn't, even if he wanted to.

He's the antitheses of Ron Paul, so he'd get my vote, as would anybody but Ru Paul.

Clint| 1.2.12 @ 9:47PM

American Spectator's Resident Anti-Catholic Bigot, Margie Doesn't Get To Use Us Catholic Tea Party Patriots To Carry Out Her Maniac Apocalyptic Foreign Policy Agenda.

The Tea Party Rebellion Steps On American Spectator's Resident Hypocrite Anti-Catholic Bigot, Again.

Oldefarte| 1.3.12 @ 10:37AM

Why don't 'us Catholic Tea Party Patriots' then explain the connection between the Catholic Church's official position on homosexuality and the libertarian Paul's differing one, dumbars!!!!

William R| 1.2.12 @ 9:48PM

Insanatorium is a big government liberal. He has no interest in downsizing government. As he says, he wants to make government family friendly. Hilarious.

Clint| 1.2.12 @ 10:21PM

"This comes on the heels of a CNN/Time poll which showed Ron Paul strong against President Obama. Highlights from the poll include Paul besting Obama 47 to 46 percent among those 65 years and older, said to be the most reliable voters. Paul also beats Obama among persons who reside in rural areas 52 to 44 percent and with Independents 48 to 47 percent. "

The Tea Party Rebellion Is Here And In Iowa.

Oldefarte| 1.3.12 @ 10:39AM

If Paul is 'strong against Obama', then why are their political views so similar?????????

Occam's Tool| 1.3.12 @ 2:15AM

Please note, for all those who bash Margie, that she would vote for a CATHOLIC. Whereas Catholic Clint would vote AGAINST a Conservative catholic.

So, who's the Catholic hater, hmmmmm....

Happy New Year, Margie. Join me in posting on Weasel Zippers and Debbie Schlussel...

Margie| 1.3.12 @ 3:46PM

Happy New Year, Occam!

They HAVE to say I'm a hater because they cannot bear hearing the truth as it is written in the Bible because it goes against the teachings of their Religion.

They will not ALLOW the free speech of Bible believing Christians for this reason, and as the Papists have been doing since the beginning of their Apostate Religion, they try and DESTROY anyone that attempts to do so.
(When I say they I am talking about the Pope worshipper Trolls here, NOT AmSpec).

They MUST say I'm a hater, instead of dealing HONESTLY with what I present form Scripture. They are NOT honest and care nothing for the Truth.
They will not admit that it is the DOCTRINE which I despise (as God does), and not the people who call themselves Catholic. (Although the rabid Papist Trolls who post here are quite despicable).

The REAL haters are them, the ones who actually REJECT Scripture and choose to believe in a different gospel and seek to try and destroy any Bible believing Christian that posts to the contrary to what they happen to believe.

I'll take a run over to Schlussel. She's another fire brand, who, if she came to know the Lord Jesus Christ would have a beautiful zeal for Him, as would you!

God bless you!

Oldefarte| 1.3.12 @ 4:06PM

I'm a born, raised, and COLLEGE EDUCATED CATHOLIC and he's about as 'Catholic' as I am a Lituanian sheep herder from Sweden!!!!!

Margie| 1.3.12 @ 4:09PM

Just realized Weasel Zippers is a site.. LOL.
Will see you there!

bobmontgomery| 1.2.12 @ 9:39PM

I was very pleased to see Alfred Regnery introduce Anita Perry at the Bartley dinner. She comported herself well, though obviously not a polished political lady. Governor Perry comports himself well also. Oh..sorry. You were saying?

bill| 1.2.12 @ 9:47PM

Rick Perry will:

Repeal ObamaCare
Ban abortion
Ban gay marriage
Ban hiring and sheltering illegals
Deport all illegals
Legalize guns in all 50 states
Pass the BBA
Eliminate the property tax and the death tax
Abolish all regulations
Abolish Dept. of education, commerce, energy, EPA, HUD
Secure the border
Increase the defence budget
Explore the energy sector
Dismantle Iran from acquiring the nuclear power
Help Israel achieve economic freedom and security by increasing aid

bill| 1.2.12 @ 9:59PM

Santorum should have gone for a rematch with Bob Casey, and if he wins, then runs for president in 2016. 2012 is not a good year for Santorum, people still remember his massive defeat in 2006.

Kingofthenet| 1.2.12 @ 11:46PM

I wonder if Rick's wife were to die, would he bring her home in the trunk of his car, for the kids to play with one last time, maybe stuff her Norman Bates style?

Dai Alanye | 1.3.12 @ 10:21AM

In a conservative venue, channeling Alan Colmes is the road neither to popularity nor respect .

Nick| 1.3.12 @ 11:52AM

Kook of the Net,

You should be wondering how close your own mother came to aborting you.
Or, how many times she contemplated aborting you after you were born, disgusting pig.

Occam's Tool| 1.3.12 @ 2:19AM

King, I had a good friend whose kid died of Cancer in 1989. He had two kids after that, and always referred to his three children, one deceased.

My understanding was that Santorum did that for closure for his kids. I hope this never happens to you. My wife had a miscarriage and she felt the fetus die. I know how that affected her. I can only imagine what poor Rick and his wife went through.

You know, some things should be left alone, like Chelsea was during the Clinton presidency. But Liberals and Paultards have no morals or decency, I've noted.

Kingofthenet| 1.3.12 @ 12:12PM

Closure? Well first have opener, the 'kid' was a 20 WEEK old fetus, the kids never met it. If A CHILD dies, by all means refer to it as a person.

Nick| 1.3.12 @ 1:24PM

Tell us, Kook, since you are soooo knowledgeable on this subject, when does the fetus (Latin for unborn baby, by the way) actually become a child?

You are aware that 20 weeks is half-way into the 2nd Trimester? Apparently not.
What a moron.

Kingofthenet| 1.3.12 @ 1:51PM

20 weeks is non-viable, what's next bringing home a zygote and microscope so the REAL kids can see their unfortunate brother/sister...this is plain creepy. I might go so far as to imagine if it was more advanced to take home a photo, but even that is weird.

Nick| 1.3.12 @ 2:29PM

"20 weeks is non-viable"
Not, for long, dope. Have you ever heard of medical advancement?

The earliest baby that has survived, so far, was a fetus (Latin for unborn baby) who was just under 22 weeks gestation, born in 2006. Amillia Taylor is now 5 years-old!

You can see pictures of this beautiful Miracle Baby, here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fejTulMNaPM

What stupid argument are you stinking, bleeding heart liberals going to come up with when doctors are able to save 13 week-old fetuses (Latin for unborn babies)?

Answer the question, Kook.
When does the fetus (Latin for unborn baby) actually become a child?

Margie| 1.3.12 @ 3:50PM

KOTN:

You too were once "non-viable".

Margie| 1.3.12 @ 4:03PM

O.T.:

"I had a good friend whose kid died of Cancer in 1989. He had two kids after that, and always referred to his three children, one deceased."

THAT is beautiful! God bless him.

Occam, so sorry for the loss of your little baby, who is in Heaven with God forever.
He knows each and everyone miscarried baby ever miscarried from the beginning of time.
He also knows each and every baby that ever was aborted, they're all there, too.. millions upon millions of them.

Tina B| 1.3.12 @ 9:23AM

Correct Occam, for proof just watch Alan Colmes and his blundering assessment of this oh so personal moment in the life of the Santorum family. A spanking by Rich Lowry and a belated apology really don't cut it.

Fortunately, Santorum could have cared less for anyone's opinion and how it would play out politically in years to come.

Randy | 1.3.12 @ 9:25AM

It's great to see Santorum rising. He's a very decent guy who has really hung in there. Plus he's messed up Ron Paul's support, and that's a huge plus for me. I'd love Romney to come in 1st, Santorum 2nd, and Paul bringing up the rear. That would be the end of Dr. Demento.

Ward Bond| 1.3.12 @ 9:28AM

Occam, you're right. My family has been through that same situation. You have to be there to understand. I think Santorum is for real.

PattyMor| 1.3.12 @ 10:02AM

Rick Perry will: Deport all illegals. Really? Does that include the ones he gave instate tuition to?
Words are cheap, and ever cheap when uttered by a politican. Actions do speak louder than words.

That's way I don't trust Romneycare Romney. Do
you really think the guy who inflicted this on Mass. will really fight to end Obamacare? Well then I have a bridge to sell you.

Oldefarte| 1.3.12 @ 10:45AM

Again, Santorum is a good guy conservative especially in the social areas, but he like many does not have the historical administrative/managerial experience necessary for the job of president. He would be in a long line of senators/representatives [the current office holder being a great example] without same, and therefore would become inept, inefficient etc within the job. Gingrich however possesses the proven legislative managerial knowhow to push through conservative agendas/programs [in a anti-Lyndon Johnson style possibly] that could turn around this historically liberal-progressive oriented government. I am not promoting Ginguich, but simple declaring his possible advantages as president, as opposed to a Santorum etc!!!!

Reuben Andreessen| 1.3.12 @ 1:12PM

Senator Santorum did good work on the Armed Services Committee. He is strong on foreign policy issues.

randyinrocklin| 1.3.12 @ 1:22PM

Santorum may win but he will not be the nominee. even he was he would lose to Obama big....
