The Spectacle Blog

During his speech Thursday night to Republicans in Davenport, Iowa, Rick Santorum disputed popular conservative pundit Ann Coulter’s recent criticism of his record on immigration.

“Tell Ann Coulter, next time you see her, get her facts straight,” the former Pennsylvania senator told an audience of more than 200 at the Center for Active Seniors.

Arguing on behalf of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in her syndicated column Wednesday, Coulter portrayed Santorum as soft on illegal immigration, citing his vote against the so-called “E-Verify” measure to provide automatic electronic verification of workers’ immigration status. But Santorum said that he voted against “E-Verify” in 2006 because it was part of a measure sponsored by John McCain and Ted Kennedy that would have provided amnesty to illegals.

Asked after the speech about his criticism of Coulter, Santorum replied: “Why would Ann Coulter criticize me for voting against the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill? I mean, Ann, should I have voted for amnesty? Should I have voted for comprehensive immigration reform? Because if that’s what you’re saying, then, doesn’t sound like you’re the real conservative here. I think when Jim DeMint and every conservative in the United States Senate voted against the McCain-Kennedy bill — yes, we voted against E-Verify, but we voted against a pretty bad bill that I think, at least you said you were against.”

Recent polls of Iowa Republicans, reportedly including internal polls conducted by rival campaigns, have shown support for Santorum surging in the closing days before next Tuesday’s first-n-the-nation caucuses.

I am very disappointed with Ann Coulter's poorly researched support of Romney. If electibility is sufficient to make her use liberal tactics on Romney's opponents I am even more disappointed.

Tina B| 12.30.11 @ 8:47AM

Me too, Turtle, do ya think even Ann is getting RINOitis? I can cast a vote for Santorum, but I still cannot imagine myself voting for the other two front runners. Coulter maybe getting puffed up with her own power, and she may need to step back for a day or two and check her researchers' credibility.

M. Stanton Evans of the National Journalism Center taught Ann Coulter better than that. Sadly, there was a failure to communicate between the old NJC and Ann Coulter. Miss Coulter failed in honest research in opposite proportion to how well she succeeded in shriek and shock journalism. I wonder whether Stan Evans considers her a success or not.

I have noticed that also. Add the long neck and it is a bit spooky.

Dmac| 12.30.11 @ 9:23AM

I've been hoping Santorum would finally be noticed. He seems to be the only one that actually thinks out his responses to questions and doesn't just give us the same autmatic responses all the other candidates give us. He seems to understand and look out for the middle class and isn't afraid to say what he believes in. He also comes off as the most honest, I'm not saying he, but at least he comes off that way. I would have no probelm voting for him.

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 11:43AM

She's just chucking grenades, and this time, instead of chucking them at the right targets, to those left of the political divide, she's chosen to go after Gingrich and Santorum.

bill| 12.30.11 @ 11:55AM

Every 4 years in the presidential race, we get some one like Huckabee or Santorum, who pretends to be conservative, win one of the two first contests, NH or IA, and then evaporates.
In 2000, McCain won NH, and then lost to Bush.
In 2008, Huckabee won IA, and McCain snatched the GOP nod.
In 2012, it's Santorum , may surprise in IA, but then never gets the GOP nod.
My guess is that after the SC and FL, it'll be a three way race: Romney, Gingrich, and Perry.

Wayne| 12.30.11 @ 12:09PM

Won't be Perry.

terri| 12.30.11 @ 4:30PM

i totally disagree bill
country is sick and tired of the same BS, sleeping giant is waking and the tea party is stronger than those in power like to believe. Romney is NOT going to win!

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 6:59PM

So now Santorum merely "pretends" to be "conservative?"

Have you taken leave of your senses?

Warrior | 12.30.11 @ 9:09PM

Very good point. He is arguably the most conservative candidate running. His conservative credentials are much greater than Romney, Gingrich or Perry.

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 12:03PM

I mentioned on one of the comment threads several days ago that she had gone "off the deep end."

Does anyone doubt me now?

Supposedly it was OK when she tore off after Gingrich, because, get this, Gingrich "wasn't conservative."

Go ask any ordinary American out there and their opinion about Gingrich will be "strong conservative." But that's an aside.

NOW she goes off after Santorum, and what was his supposed flaw?

According to Coulter, I suppose Santorum wants scores of millions of illegals to be pouring over our borders, morning, noon and night.

She's utterly 'round the bend.

Now what would account for her not just so recent weirdness.

What accounts for her of late intellectual darkening?

Wayne| 12.30.11 @ 12:07PM

Two women have disappointed me greatly in 2011. One is Ann Coulter and the other is Laura Ingraham. Both have jumped on the Romney bandwagon and then trash conservative GOP candidates. Just heard the re-run of Laura trashing Cain. She also said that the Tea Party house members are unfit to govern, because they pushed for a balanced budget amendment. Its time to separate the sheep from the goats. We now know what Coulter and Ingraham truly are.

Delmar Jackson| 12.30.11 @ 2:08PM

Ann Coulter and laura Ingraham are frequently the ONLY people in the room talking about immigration.
republicans seem to forget the tax immigration places on the working poor, so only talk about the taxes that impact themselves and refuse to talk about immigration, while democrats refuse to even acknowledge the problem exists.

if not for Coulter and ingraham and pat Buchanan, no one in the media would be discussing one of the most important issues to American working people today.

Wayne| 12.31.11 @ 3:12PM

No excuse to trash the Tea Party.

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 3:06PM

Ingraham got dumped when she got sick.

Thus she now has a thing for Romney, who has remained with his wife for some time now.

It's like Kathryn Jean Lopez having a thing for Romney, because Romney stayed with his wife even when she was a big ole porker.

As for Coulter, her Upper East/West Side lifestyle is slowly reflecting itself in a darkening of her intellect.

Oldefarte| 12.30.11 @ 12:09PM

Try understanding the essential elements of Coulter's editorial:
'....In the upcoming presidential election, two issues are more important than any others: repealing Obamacare and halting illegal immigration. If we fail at either one, the country will be changed permanently. ......So let's consider which of the Republican candidates are most likely to succeed at these objectives. ....The only way to stop Obamacare is to beat Obama in 2012, and repeal it before the health care Leviathan is born. .....All current Republican presidential candidates say they will overturn Obamacare. The question for Republican primary voters should be: Who is most likely to win? .....2012 is not a year for a wild card. It's not a year for any candidate who will end up being the issue, instead of making Obama the issue. It's not a year for one wing of the Republican Party to be making a point with another wing. (And there are no Rockefeller Republicans left, anyway.) It's not a year to be gambling that America will vote for its first woman president, or that the country is ready for a nut-bar libertarian. .....Running against an incumbent president in a make-or-break election, Republicans need a candidate with a track record of winning elections with voters similar to the entire American electorate. .....Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich have never had to win votes beyond small, majority-Republican congressional districts. ....Jon Huntsman, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum have won statewide elections, but Huntsman and Perry ran in extremely red states that don't resemble the American electorate. Only Romney and Santorum have won a statewide election in a blue state, making them our surest-bets in a general election. .....But if Santorum wins, we lose on the second most important issue -- illegal immigration -- and he'll be the last Republican ever to win a general election in America. ....And yet, almost all Republican presidential candidates support some form of amnesty for illegals in order to appeal to the business lobby. ......Kowtowing to business (while pretending to kowtow to Hispanics), Paul, Perry and Santorum oppose E-Verify. As a senator, Rick Santorum voted against even the voluntary use of E-Verify. .....Numbers USA, one of the leading groups opposed to our current insane immigration policies, gives Republican presidential candidates the following grades on immigration: Paul, F; Gingrich, D-minus; Huntsman, D-minus; Santorum, D-minus; Perry, D; Romney, C-minus; and Bachmann, B-minus. .....That leaves us with Romney and Bachmann as the candidates with the strongest, most conservative positions on illegal immigration. As wonderful as Michele Bachmann is, 2012 isn't the year to be trying to make a congresswoman the first woman president. Two Little Indians sitting in the sun; one was just a congresswoman and then there was one. ...' Get it now? The only way to defeat Obama may just possibly be by nominating an ELECTABLE CANDIDATE by the Republican Party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wayne| 12.31.11 @ 3:14PM

UsuallyACoulterFan| 12.30.11 @ 2:40PM

I am normally a big fan of Ann Coulter's writings, but I caught this in her article yesterday. She normally is a research machine, so this is all the more surpising. The E-Verify thing seemed like a random element to base the evaluation of any candidate's entire position on. I am glad Rick called her out.

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 3:09PM

Any stick will do, any smear, any falsehood, any shading of the truth, anything that's needed to run down any challenger to Romney.

She's prostituted her intellect, her pen, her reputation, and she did so for a guy who is OK with flamers in the military, and OK with abortion.

It's like everything she's written, everything she's done, everything' she's accomplished, it's all been expunged and obliterated by her smearing others so as to advance Romney.

Oldefarte| 12.30.11 @ 3:16PM

Yeah, it's all one big RINO conspiracy with Coulter leading the anti-conservatism charge. Meanwhile, the MORONS of this country are set to insure another four years of the following in H&C fashion:

".... Obama's ICE Offers Hot Line to Busted Illegals Friday, December 30, 2011 01:31 PM
By: Newsmax Wires...The Obama administration has found a new way to fight against states’ efforts to nab illegal immigrants. It created a free new hot line Thursday to assist people taken in on immigration charges.Detained individuals can call anytime, day or night, if they think they “may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime,” according to the Homeland Security Department’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which launched the hot line. The hot line will offer translation in several different languages. ICE staffers will assemble the caller’s information and then direct it to a field office for immediate action, according to a news release from the agency. The hot line is meant “to ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights,” the release says. It’s all “part of a broader effort to improve our immigration enforcement process and prioritize resources to focus on threats to public safety, repeat immigration law violators, recent border entrants and immigration fugitives while continuing to strengthen oversight of the nation’s immigration detention system and facilitate legal immigration,” according to the release......"

Margie| 12.30.11 @ 8:08PM

No, you forgot, Oldefarte. It's a RINO-CINO conspiracy!!!
Can't forget the CINO part!

Cato| 12.30.11 @ 4:30PM

Fact is, Santorum IS weak on immigration. He is a charter member of the "compassionate conservative" branch of the GOP, which is soft on government spending and immigration (see, e.g., W. Bush), believing that limited-government conservatism is "uncompassionate." Santorum may be staunchly conservative on social issues and foreign policy, but these are fairly irrelevant in an election that will turn on the economy. That plays into Romney's strengths.

More to the point, Santorum is unelectable. He may have the hearts of social conservatives, but the media will paint him as a puritannical right-wing fanatic, and independents will flock back to Obama. I'm no Romney fan, but he is our only real hope to unseat Obama. Don't underestimate the power of incumbency to be re-elected, combined with a media determined to destroy whomoever the GOP put up as the alternative. Romney is vetted, inoffensive, and familiar to all -- his moderate image may be a disadvantage in the primaries, but it's a Godsend in the general election.

Conversely, the media will have a field day with the already-tarred "angry man" of the debates who wants to lock up gays and single mothers (that's how the media will portray Santorum, anyway). If you want to feel good and self-righteous for a few minutes by pulling the lever for Santorum in the primaries, go for it. But be prepared for four more years of Obama.

C Bowen | 12.30.11 @ 4:56PM

Coupled with his bizarre support for the invasion of Iraq, and his off the reservation claim that Iraq really was a threat with WMDs, he is the charter member of the Invade the World, Invite the World club.

Sick Of The GOP Establishment| 12.30.11 @ 6:23PM

Regardless of whether or not Santorum is a good candidate, Coulter & Ingraham have adopted the tactics of the left to clear a straight path for the phoney from Taxachusetts. I no longer take either seriously & both have become as obnoxious as Michael Medved during the GOP's current love affair with "he of the perfectly coifed hair-do". There is none worse than those who want to not only tell everyone who to vote for, but have a contemptuous way of doing so.

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 7:03PM

Yup!

I turned off Laura years and years ago.

When she got all religious after getting dumped, and got all preachy and rammy, that was it for her.

As for Coulter, she's just all over the place.

Never really listened to Medved. I don't like those he selects to talk to, they're really irritating.

He does have good segments when he covers certain historical events.

One I like listening to is when Medved covers Thanksgiving, and goes over in some detail what your typical American colonial drank on any given day.

Those guys were puttin' it away!

Mike| 12.30.11 @ 6:24PM

Coulter. Facts. The circles of the Venn diagram do not intersect.

Dan| 12.30.11 @ 7:07PM

Santorum would make a strong candidate, for Santorum wouldn't hesitate to fire an elbow at Obama.

The thing is his Catholicism can be somewhat overwhelming, and he might turn off people.

But then again, when only 53% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 are working, ----------- in such a situation the American people are going to be looking for somebody to get this economy MOVING.

So this could be time for a guy like Santorum.

In many ways, the argument in favour of Gingrich being acceptable to the electorate that is completely contrary to what we've been hearing, applies equally to Santorum.

Cato| 12.30.11 @ 10:23PM

That's the problem -- Santorum is known for his social conservatism, not economics. If Santorum is the candidate, the Democrats will successfully make this an election over social issues, taking the focus off Obama's disastrous economic policies.

Romney doesn't have that baggage. His flip-flopping on social issues is actually an advantage in the general election -- the very reason conservatives aren't warm to him is the reason why he will attract independents.

The media will not be able to portray Romney as a raving right-winger the way they will with Santorum. And Romney's background will put the focus squarely where it belongs -- the economy.

If Santorum were the GOP candidate, by the time the media got through with him, he will look like Cotton Mather meets Captain Queeg.

I'm not a Romney man; I wish someone else ran (like Paul Ryan). But I'm a no-Obama man. And Romney is our best shot to beat him, hands down.

When the US government doesn’t effectively carry out the laws enacted in 1986 Immigration Control and Reform Act, the states of Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Utah, South Carolina have been forced into a situation of enforcing their own state border policing laws. The financial consequences of illegal migrants and immigrants have been building momentum for years and Arizona, unable to satisfy the compulsory court unfunded mandates any longer broke away and yelled to America they couldn’t find the money to support the impoverished, from the next door neighbor. The federal government’s bleak or intentional failure to construct the 2006 Secure Fence Act has caused serious deficits in these beleaguered states, which has ultimately spread without hesitation to all fifty states.

Some have stayed quiet about this terrible affliction, as California, Nevada and New Mexico. But avid analysts only have to glance at the elevated state deficits, to see the illegal immigration cash dilemma. Notably the Democrats, Liberal and ultra Republican elites will not tell the truth about the costs, as they have been corrupted by the proverbial injections of Campaign contributions. It seems like President Obama had enforced immigration laws to some extent, but even that push is waning? It started off well with near zero tolerance for anybody found to be in this nation illegally, but of late the man has instituted new measures upon the courts and ICE, to only deport incorrigible criminals; others with minimal police records have been allowed to walk.

The worst offender of this administrations payroll is the Liberal Socialist US, Attorney General Eric Holder, who has a questionable agenda in the Department of Justice. He has been brought before Congress on numerous occasions, including the ‘Fast and Furious’ controversy over weapons getting into the hands of drug cartels in Mexico. As yet this terrible issue has not been successfully resolved and ended with the death of a Border Patrol agent? The DOJ have been merciless in suing states trying to save the few recession dollars they have, for US citizens and legal residents.

North Carolina could be next as more sovereign states see the disaster indefinitely forthcoming from law Courts, forcibly demanding that taxpayers must supplement the income of illegal aliens, when the states cannot even feed, clothe and house their own low income residents? Illegal immigration is completely out of hand, with an estimated 8 million still favored by companies who have hired them, although American workers should be filling these jobs. States like California, Nevada, Colorado and New York, is just the inevitable tip of the iceberg whose principles cities as Los Angles, Denver, Las Vegas who’s Governor, Mayors and elected officials have deliberately ignored immigration enforcement and their counties designated as Sanctuary States or cities, permitting the true populace to unjustly pay for the illegal occupiers.

Prior administrations have allowed this to happen, putting no severe emphasis on removal. After all its big profits from republican donors and the boon of more votes for the Liberal progressives and Democrats, is not looked upon with disdain by the politicians. Most of them are ruefully disconnected from most Americans, and have been unconcerned with the projected number of 500.000 a year who arrive here by plane or who ignore the gross limitations of the border fence. Then another 1,000.000 that seems to be growing rate for incoming legal immigrants, who come via business approvals. I am not saying we don’t desire more highly skilled occupations, so we can compete with the global market. But companies should not be given visas for the less skilled, when job opportunities should be filled by occupational students and highly prized accomplished persons from other countries. But we must draw the line on the destitute who thinks America owes them a better quality of life. They should be arrested in any street demonstrations when demanding the same rights as citizens. It’s unfortunate that ICE is not allowed to perform its job properly on the hazardous border or in the confines of our country, to apprehend and take suspicious people into custody.

We have a good chance to resolve the inaction of multiple administrations, by applying the ‘Legal Workforce Act’ or as established as mandatory E-Verify program. This current bill, H.R. 2885 can right some massive wrongs and impose ‘Attrition through Enforcement’ guaranteeing that illegal aliens will self deport taking their families with them. You can expedite this method by stringently complaining to the Federal and State offices of Senators and the Congressional House phone switchboard at 202-224-3121.

Do not let them knowingly hold back this law as it will help relieve some of the 22 million unemployed American job seekers. This is a simple, less aggressive and relatively free from taxpayer’s expense, as nationwide employers will no longer be able to skirt this law. There will be no mitigating circumstance as many will see the inside of federal prison cell. Not only has 73 Republicans; mostly fresh Tea Party politicians, but also 3 Democrats have also co-sponsored this imperative bill as to date. Another bill sponsored by Steve King’s (R-IA) Birthright Citizenship Act of 2011 (H.R.140) would amend the law so the unborn babies of illegal aliens smuggled calculatedly through borders or by international flight are ineligible for citizenship. The cost to hospitals and an array of welfare payments and entitlements is the most costly for US taxpayers totaling billions of more dollars. This is another demand, you should make of the politicians who represent your state.

The outlay to supply welfare is prohibitive and will only rise in future years. The Tea Party is already trying to fight off the spending carnival of the Obama government and another $1.3 Trillion dollars are already in the works. We are delusional if we think either party, other than the entrenched Tea Party members are going to put on the fiscal brakes. Former Speaker Newt Gingrich as already stated he would offer millions of illegal immigrants, that if they have been residing here 25 years or more a non-citizenship status. This is wrong, as millions in other lands still contemplate a visa, after waiting patiently in line. Then what about the contemptible family reunification program, which ended once again, costing taxpayers billions of dollars after the 1986 mass amnesty. New immigrants can sponsor family members financially, then renege leaving the taxpayers once again to pick up the tab on retirement and pensions. America no longer can afford the laws enacted, such as Gingrich softened agenda. The man would never uttered this plan, if he was in the true leadership of the TEA PARTY?

There is no more money, we are broke. Another amnesty as a projected analysis of the Heritage Foundation, the substantiated by NumbersUSA, American Patrol, FAIR and Judicial watch eventually would cost 2.6 Trillion dollars as of today? The Legislators are completely disconnected from the ordinary Americans trying to survive. To me, who moved away from California after being threatened for my free speech opinion about the overwhelming presence of illegal aliens? Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal county, AZ Arizona and also running for Congress, expressed today that we have 24.000 soldiers safeguarding the border between North and South Korea and yet the politicians in Washington are absent of a brain cell, when it comes to placing troops to stop the illegal invaders or the drug cells that are gaining ground inside our sovereign land. These Thursday Federal immigration officials announced the creation of a telephone hotline to make certain that detainees held by the local police are informed of their rights. These high officials I am sure influenced By Sen. Harry Reid, Minority Speaker Pelosi and other legislators in Homeland Security and ICE seem far more concerned with civil right for criminals; in millions of Americans eyes, anybody who enters America without permission—is a CRIMINAL AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS ONE AND PROSECUTED AS A FELONY?

It’s extraordinarily how citizens and lawful residents have been continuously skewered, for the benefit big business, pro-illegal alien fundamental organizations, unions, the Church and an assortment of groups of open border radicalism. Already these groups are conspiring to compromise the presidential race. Using any method they have at their disposal including—out of sight—non citizens voting and the highest density of irregularities with absentee ballots that are the simplest of application forms to forge. Democrats have been the worst offenders and have never been punished to the fullest extent of the law. The example is the ACORN groups that were not passive in allowing non-citizen voting, felons, the deceased and anybody who could make their mark. The 2012 presidential race will be a deciding factor, if Washington stays a tax and spend administration under Obama, or if we can publicize to the world that the left over Republicans led by a TEA PARTY revolutionaries as Michele Bachmann can contain the Democratic expenditures.

In conclusion the Tea Party doesn't discriminate against any nationality or race, this is an offensive plan by the Democrats to undermine the alternative party who are strictly against illegal immigration, but openly welcomes those who patiently legally wait their turn, in becoming part of the opportunity that is America.

Anyone with half a brain will vote for the Republican nominee in order to HOUND the Demoncrats out of office!!

Yeah, baby!

"SICK OF THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT" is no doubt simply SICK and WHOSE ELEVATOR DOES NOT PROCEED TO THE TOP, sadly. This moronic fool defines the idiocy of who/what baught into the H&C bullexcrement of 2007-8 and allowed the current trojun-horse-in-chief to conquer this country. Repeatedly as 'ol Forrest brilliantly proclaimed [about 'SICK' and others], STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES [and think, speaks, blogs, etc]. Please contribute to your local mental health organizations and possibly provide SICK with his needed phychological assistance or confinement!!!!!!!!!!

Don't forget it took a Bush and Mc Cain to give us an Obama in the first place. If Obama is the anti-Christ then Bush is the anti-John-the-Baptist. McCain made the man-child look credible. The Dems added to the power of the Federal Government and the GOP insiders see that power for themselves.

Is it possible to choose a different set of voters than the one that's already primed to be "persuaded" by Obama or the GOP nominee?

I think a lot of people are realizing their FUBAR moment, and soon enough they will be in CYA mode. There's no doubt that almost every person paying any attention in America is wallowing in the overwhelming knowledge that things ARE fouled up beyond all recognition. And, as time passes, with it getting even WORSE, sanity demands covering your OWN ass.

Romney, Santorum, Coulter, Gingrich, et al won't put a chicken in YOUR pot!

Read today's relevant Mark Steyn offering.

Denial is rampant! But, reality sooner or later trumps tulip-mania-like ignorance. Yes, isn't it too obvious that 2011 is a time of debt MANIA?

The MANIACS are in charge!

Shakedown's a coming!

Rick Santorum is nervous talking about the subject of Immigration and always goes into I'm a descendant of immigrations spin while never speaking strongly against illegal immigration or exess one million a year legal immigration. What job crisis in America? Not with squishy soft Beltway bandits.
