Newt Flip-Flops

FLIP FLOP NUMBER ONE

FLIP: Debate, earlier this year:

And candidly, Mitt, your plan ultimately, philosophically, it’s not Obamacare, and that’s not a fair charge. But your plan essentially is one more big government, bureaucratic, high-cost system, which candidly could not have been done by any other state because no other state had a Medicare program as lavish as yours, and no other state got as much money from the federal government under the Bush administration for this experiment. So there’s a lot as big government behind Romneycare. Not as much as Obamacare, but a heck of a lot more than your campaign is admitting.

FLOP A memo he wrote, in 2006:

Newt Notes

The most exciting development of the past few weeks is what has been happening up in Massachusetts. The health bill that Governor Romney signed into law this month has tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system.

We agree entirely with Governor Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100% insurance coverage for all Americans. Individuals without coverage often do not receive quality medical attention on par with those who do have insurance. We also believe strongly that personal responsibility is vital to creating a 21st Century Intelligent Health System. Individuals who can afford to purchase health insurance and simply choose not to place an unnecessary burden on a system that is on the verge of collapse; these free-riders undermine the entire health system by placing the onus of responsibility on taxpayers…  While the Commonwealth’s plan will naturally endure tremendous scrutiny from those who assert that the law will not work as intended, Massachusetts leaders are to be commended for this bipartisan proposal to tackle the enormous challenge of finding real solutions for creating a sustainable health system.

FLIP FLOP NUMBER TWO

FLIP: Debate, earlier this year: We’re here tonight talking to the American people about why every single one of us is better than Barack Obama. And that’s the topic.

Similarly, at another debate this year:But I also think it’s important to say of leaders that you find solution — I don’t think people hire one of us just to say: I sympathize with you. I think they hire us to say: This is how we will solve it. And I would say every person at this table is more likely to solve those problems than Barack Obama.

FLOP: Today, on CNN:

Newt Gingrich has finally found a politician he considers even worse than the president he calls socialist, anti-colonialist and radical. That would be his fellow Republican Ron Paul.

“I think Barack Obama is very destructive to the future of the United States. I think Ron Paul’s views are totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American,” Gingrich said Tuesday in a CNN interview with Wolf Blitzer.

Could he vote for Paul? “No.” If it came down to Paul vs. Obama? “You’d have a very tough choice at that point.”

Hmmmm….

Romney helped crafted Obamacare, and has no apology. Shame on Romney.

Gingrich is no perfect, he has a lot of baggage. But he has charisma and leadership.

Rick Perry is a staunch conservative.

Why nobody considers Perry? It's sad. We must not repeat 1976, but work hard to repeat 1980.

This time, it's Rick Perry.

With enemies like the amoral, reptilian psychopath Gingrich The Hutt, does Ron Paul need friends?

Perry is a dumber version of G. W. Bush. How is that possible? Ron Paul will never vote for Newt, either. The only electable Republican is Ron Paul who gets a lot of support from the military and families of military members who are sick of their loved ones dying in endless and senseless wars. He also gets the most support from independents, the young, and disafffected Democrats. He is the only one adding support to the party. All the rest are doing is driving the voters from the Republican brand.

Incredibly foolish statement by Newt. Were he to get the nomination, he would need as much as possible of the Paulites to get elected, and he won't get them now. Needlessly splitting the GOP (which may be becoming inevitable anyway -- Perry's really the only candidate who can unite both factions, more or less.)

WL| 12.27.11 @ 10:02PM

Well Martin, you might be right....the party "split" is "becoming inevitable anyway."...

The problem is...as much as I toss and turn, I can't quite figure out which side is the one who is intentionally sabotaging the GOP this year...

Any fool can see it...

But beats me...who the bad guys are.......

As much as you may hate this...and a much as I may be wrong...I think it's Paul....

or both.

Clint's own record of military service rivals that of Sgt York. Ron Paul's record parallels that of Hawkeye Pierce. No doubt Ron and Clint rappelled into the jungles of Vietnam to perform marvels of medicine time after time.

For the record, if I were in Iowa, it is pretty clear I would vote for Santorum. I also have repeatedly explained why a "draft" movement for Jindal or Ryan could still work. I have repeatedly criticized Romney. He is not my choice. Period.

Occam's Tool| 12.27.11 @ 10:22PM

Well, if Paul gets the nomination, I'm writing in my wife. No way I'm voting for paul. But I will show up to vote against Klobuchar and for Cravaack. But Paul's a traitor supporter. And Clint supports him, and Clint's an antisemitic scumbag cowardly 4-F who calls Jews "sandmonkeys."

Lots of people including the writer who once again fail to do their homework. Gingrich supported Romney's original plan before the liberal Massachusett's legislature got a hold of it. Romney vetoed the changes and it was overridden by the liberal MA legislature. (Romney is not my candidate but facts are facts).

wodiej| 12.28.11 @ 7:16AM

BTW...several other prominent conservatives also supported it:

Jim DeMint
Marco Rubio
Judd Gregg
Rick Perry
Rick Santorum

martin j smith| 12.28.11 @ 7:42AM

Romney and Gingrich cancel each other out. Ron Paul may have artifiical support from the Left Socialists since he does = Obama in national security and foreign policy but he too will not be the nominee. He will Run on his own because he wants Obama to win. Period.

Bumr50| 12.28.11 @ 7:45AM

What's the point of all this bomb-throwing between AmSpec writers?

And don't BS me by saying that this is just "normal vetting."

People seem highly offended by Gingrich's candidacy for some reason. Reasons I don't care about.

I'm simply never going to cast another vote for Mitt Romney. Period. Seriously.

My mind was made up three years ago, and nothing can change it.

I'd rather see Obama win than let the GOP get away with yet another instance of neglecting the wishes of their base. I have absolutely no loyalty to them whatsoever, and am pretty much a Republican by default as the lesser of two evils.

Dan| 12.28.11 @ 10:22AM

QUIN,

why don't you compare this tawdry little listing of non-issues, with the list of GENUINE ACCOMPLISHMENTS that Peter F. spells out today.

Don't you feel slightly embarrassed by your henpecking of Gingrich, particularly in light of all the REAL and MEASURABLE ways that Gingrich has advanced the REAL conservative agend1?

Are we trying to get a guy who will implement GENUINE conservative reform?

Are we trying to find that person who we KNOW will weather the storms that will come?

ONE guy in the race has the types, the kinds, the LONGSTANDING list of REAL accomplishments that this country craves..................................... and you trot out this garbage .......................

Have you lost your mind or something?

Is this how they taught you to weigh and assess competing claims at Georgetown University?

Is this the extent of your "education?"

You can't size up whose candidacy you're advancing?

You can't put it together whose political interests you're pushing forward?

Are you like Hewitt, on the payroll so to speak?

If not, why not, because your yeoman work advancing his candidacy has earned you a paycheck from Mr. Bain Capital.

Oldefarte| 12.28.11 @ 11:19AM

Newt is simply one of many in a long line of dishonest, BS artist-politicians that rape the taxpayer-voters that elected them to office. They all will say/do anyting that is in their own selfish best interests, while pontificating STUPIDLY feel-good pronouncements to their constituents/public. As the congressman shouted at the SOTU address YOU/THEY.....LIE! The one/only solution for us is to elect the BEST-OF-THE-WORST, and in that endever we as supposedly rational, semi-intelligent human beings have seriously failed. We are responsible for 11/4/08 and for each and every similar [though not as drastic] voting decision we have made in the last century and beyond. In the business world, if an employee/executive is corrupt/criminal etc, that employee is eventually FIRED/TERMINATED, and that folks is what we the people/taxpayers need to accormpolish with ALL OF THE DEMOCRATS and MANY OF THE REPUBLICANS in office today. They as OUR EMPLOYEES/SERVANTS are not and have not performed the duties/jobs that they were elected/hired to do, and we are failures in our oversite responsibilities in allowing them to use our taxpayer incomes to operte our government corruptly. We need to expand the tea party activities and provide back-bench/office support for their courageous efforts by [1]electing the best of the worst (ie Republicans) and [2] continually monitoring their activities to assure their adherence to our taxpayer-voter wishes for governmental operations!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan| 12.28.11 @ 3:33PM

So when he created a budget surplus, ------- that was dishonest?

Initiating and forcing welfare reform on a very reluctant President Clinton? More dishonesty?

Reforming to the extent that a Speaker could various agencies? Yet more dishonesty?

His many years studying and staying abreast of America's national security threats? Yet again, dishonesty?

His long time teaching America's two and three star Generals? Again, rank dishonesty?

If Gingrich's accomplishments are insufficient for you, then you would have NEVER been satisfied when Ronald Reagan ran for President in 1980, for a side by side of the two candidates, would clearly demonstrate that Gingrich had done more at that stage in their political development.

This searching through a haystack for an unblemished diamond is increasingly bizarre.

Oldefarte| 12.29.11 @ 10:59AM

Re-read/understand my above position regarding BEST OF THE WORST. I am not anti-Newt, but am instead anti-Obama/Democrats. The TRUTH is that Newt has been dishonest about his GSE profiteering etc, but no big deal [as I said all politicians LIE]!!!!!!!

Dai Alanye | 12.28.11 @ 4:27PM

Newt has been all over the place in search of publicity and applause - no doubt about it. But... elections should be concerned with the future not the past. The critical question is, will Newt behave himself in the future?

Regrettably, good behavior looks doubtful based on his performance since the day he first led in the polls. Until that day I liked him.

Santorum is the true conservative's only hope. If he fails we'll need to compromise on one flip-flopper or the other.

Occam's Tool| 12.28.11 @ 6:25PM

Santorum would make a fine President.
