Lost in the Bushes

The “support” from Poppy Bush for Mitt Romney may do Romney more harm than good, at least among a large segment of Tea Partiers and other conservatives. If I were inclined to support Romney, it would make me less inclined to do so — but then again, for the very reasons I am not well disposed to a Bush endorsement I am also not disposed toward Romney in the first place. The more the old-line East Coast establishment rallies around Romney, the less attractive he becomes — if, that is, you believe he was attractive in the first place.

But nothing says “mushy lack of vision thing” more strongly than support from the elderBush.

This endorsement only solidified by theory that W stripped of his cowboy boots/hat/ranch was simply Bush II and a continuation of the Yale/Kennebuckport yankee establishment, blue-bloods within the Republican Party. Crawford, Texas was no doubt a political ruse [and Hope & Change] for election purposes only. Hades, they all do it sadly, and its mostly what one steps into while crossing a large cow pasture. Maybe Pennsylvania Rick has multiple wives [or Minnesota Michelle runs a brothel], who knows?????

" Donald Trump Bolts Republican Party, Eyeing Other 2012 Options

Donald Trump is officially a man without a party.

The real estate mogul whose flirtation with the 2012 presidential race has never really ended despite announcing seven months ago he would not seek the Republican nomination has been signaling he wants to find other ways onto a presidential ticket.

Trump took another step in that direction on Thursday, switching his party affiliation from Republican to “unaffiliated,” according to a source close to the reality television star.

According to the source, he did so because he is “disgusted” with the way Republicans are handling matters in Washington, including the recent payroll tax cut deal. But the move also sets Trump up for a potential third-party run for president — a possibility he began talking about almost as soon as he told his fans in May he wasn’t running."

Oldefarte| 12.25.11 @ 12:18PM

Again, IF Trump [or Paul] maniacally decides to run a third party campaign, it will completely destroy the Republican candidate chances of winning [and will assure an Obama victory due to the conservative/moderate vote split resulting from same]. Anyone so acting in a wholely selfish manner will have the blood of the American people upon their hands for allowing a Democrat victory to occur, and rightfully should be hounded out of business/politics/America thereafter!!!!!!!!

I think you're exactly right that if you're so against GHWB (from the right) that his endorsement is a negative, you're probably not voting for Romney anyway. I think this helps him with rank-and-file conservatives who tend to hold all former republican presidents in high regard.

Dixie Pixie| 12.23.11 @ 3:50PM

It does make one wonder if the Bushies ever get out very much?
Being trapped behind Secret Service guarded walls of wealth and privilege does limit one's vision.

Interested Conservative| 12.23.11 @ 3:59PM

Two points:

1 - This was GHWB, not W. Wonder who, or if, W will endorse (I doubt it).

2 - Mr. Hillyer - It seems we're headed to Mitt, Newt, Ron, and possibly a 4th. Let's limit 4th to either Rick, but not "anyone else". Any order of preference yet?

Al Adab| 12.23.11 @ 4:03PM

Why be surprised? Is this not from the same old business as usual republicans of which we wish to rid ourselves? How many times must we follow them to defeat before we learn?

Diogenes| 12.23.11 @ 4:55PM

I guess that makes Romney the 'kinder, gentler' candidate. Of course that was just doublespeak for 'I'm not like that mean old Reagan', so I guess it's appropriate.

Paul McGrath| 12.23.11 @ 5:10PM

You're not "inclined" towards Romney, and you're obviously not inclined towards Gingrich. Maybe, at some point, Quin, you might find it appropriate to find something postive to say about someone--anyone--running for president on the Republican side? Anyone?

But perhaps doing so would require a bit of courage on your part. I'm waiting.

Dan| 12.23.11 @ 6:52PM

Don't ya know? Quin is for Santorum!

But it's all a state secret or something.

We all know what he's doing; he's working to advance the candidacy of Romney, whether he admits it to himself or not.

That's what he's doing.

Just like Bachmann.

Quin| 12.24.11 @ 3:25PM

I have written plenty of positive things about Santorum. I wrote a lot of positive things about Cain -- many more positive than negative. I've praised Bachmann's debate performances a number of times.

Are you insinuating our Dear Leader is a little 'light in the loafers'?

But the mainstream media keeps telling us he's sports guy, what with him playing golf every other day and his 'sick' jump shot?

You should consider taking that back.

Nah, Bob, he was Sanduskied as a child in Pennsylvania!!!!!!!!!

They love America so much, now don't they............

What public school did you by chance attend that taught you to capitalize every word [or perhaps did you learn that from your Ron Paul comic books instead] ????????

RJ| 12.23.11 @ 5:51PM

You are right on Quin. Bush 41's comments about breaking his "no new taxes" pledge not being a big deal in answer to the question of Romney being a flip-flopper, just strengthened my concern about Romney. Bush 41 was a disappointment on domestic issues as President. His legacy is the Clinton presidency. Romney would be more of the same. Bush 43 was a disaster. His legacy is the Obama administration.

Dan| 12.23.11 @ 6:51PM

Any Conservative, anybody who loves their country, has got to be against anybody who receives the blessing of the Bush clan.

The Bush family's dominance in the GOP over the last two decades has been a disaster.

A flat out disaster!

Mike| 12.23.11 @ 8:41PM

From your lips to God's ears, Dan

Since Huntsman is clearly too sane to ever get the GOP nomination, if Romney is knocked out of the box, one of the other clowns is your nominee.

Bob K.| 12.23.11 @ 7:45PM

I'll be glad when this silly season is over for the Republicans and someone (Just about anyone!) is selected by the Republican Party to be the standard bearer of the party this election. I just hope whoever it is knows which part of the standard is supposed to point upward!

Meanwhile the bloggers here on AS are all writing as if they are in recovery from recent lobotomy surgery. They should rest up and get in shape for the real conflict.

Nikki Haley's the only non-liberal endorsement Romney's gotten and her approval numbers are about where his poll numbers are.

When John "David Souter is a real conservative" Sununu endorses somebody, I know who not to vote for.

martin j smith| 12.24.11 @ 9:36AM

I really do not know what is with these people wh think a Bush blessing is of any value. If they do believe that my G-D please sign them up for serious mental health treatment for at least Delusional Disorders along with Schizophrenia -with symptoms of auditory and visual hallucinations. In patient would be best.

Otherwise this is the most cynical move or the most foolish ( say stupid ) in this political season.
Let me state that the loss of 2008 was all about BUSH( GWB).

Rob| 12.24.11 @ 1:34PM

Bush Sr.'s support for Romney would not be given if Jeb were seriously considering entering the race, and so we can conclude that Jeb does not expect to do so, and might well endorse Romney, which could give him a boost in Florida.

martin j smith| 12.24.11 @ 4:50PM

Bob: You do not understand my point of view and also why any Bush would be a disaster. After two terms of GWB the nation was willing to buy ANY snake oil and they did. Now do you not believe if any Bush were in the race or in any way connected with supporting a candidate the Socialists would paint the Bush as more of the same ? If Bob you do not see that --then it is no wonder the Republican Party leadershit is useless at best.

davod| 12.26.11 @ 2:52AM

"Bush 43 was a disaster. His legacy is the Obama administration."

Bush43 lasted two terms. Did Bush 43 do anything right?
