Some people are all aghast that Mitt Romney has not agree to
debate Newt Gingrich one one one. Oh, Romney must be scared!!!!
That’s total BS. Utter, complete nonsense. And I say this as
someone who is decidedly unenamored of Romney. (In fact, for really
good material on Romney, go here.)
Anybody who knows conservative history should know what happened
the last time one purported front-runner agreed to a one-one-one
debate with the other purported front-runner in a multi-candidate
field. George H.W. Bush INSISTED that only he and Ronald Reagan be
allowed on stage at Nashua, N.H. Reagan had other ideas. Phil
Crane, Bob Dole, Howard Baker and John Anderson walked out on stage
at Reagan’s invitation, the moderator tried to shut off Reagan’s
microphone, Reagan firmly said that he (the Reagan campaign) “paid
for this microphone,” and Bush looked like the bad guy, and worse,
like the bad guy with deer-in-headlight proclivities. That single
moment turned around Reagan’s campaign and set him on the course to
the White House.
it’s just flat-out unfair to exclude other legitimate candidates
from debates. And, after Nashua, it’s decidedly bad karma.
If Gingrich wants to insist on a one-on-one debate, fine, let
him play the role of Poppy Bush.
Meanwhile, let Santorum, Bachmann, and Perry all make hay from
Gingrich’s arrogance.

I think a round-robin series of one-on-one debates would probably be better.

" Donald Trump Bolts Republican Party, Eyeing Other 2012 Options
Donald Trump is officially a man without a party.
The real estate mogul whose flirtation with the 2012 presidential race has never really ended despite announcing seven months ago he would not seek the Republican nomination has been signaling he wants to find other ways onto a presidential ticket.
Trump took another step in that direction on Thursday, switching his party affiliation from Republican to “unaffiliated,” according to a source close to the reality television star.
According to the source, he did so because he is “disgusted” with the way Republicans are handling matters in Washington, including the recent payroll tax cut deal. But the move also sets Trump up for a potential third-party run for president — a possibility he began talking about almost as soon as he told his fans in May he wasn’t running."

I think Gingrich has already debated Cain and Huntsman. I think he would like to debate everyone.
Dan| 12.23.11 @ 1:46PM
Clearly, you're not all rabid and foaming at the mouth about Gingrich, which allows you to discern that Gingrich wants to discuss the issues with just about anyone, anywhere, anytime.
But Hillyer, not long after speaking of Gingrich and David Duke in the same breath, has gone completely off the deep end because Aaron Goldstein had the temerity to note that Romney refuses to take any stage where the media establishment won't be providing cover for him.

While Gingrich may not have technically lobbied members of Congress, “Lobbying is not just meeting with people on the Hill,” Abramoff said. “Lobbying is a package, and part of the package is strategic advice — companies need to know what to do and which direction to go in.”
“And I think that those who come off the Hill and take advantage of the revolving door and cash in to give strategic advice is the same sort of area that I’ve talked about,” he said. “It’s a problem.”
Abramoff dismissed Gingrich’s explanation that he was offering Freddie Mac “history lessons” when he collected nearly $2 million from the mortgage giant.
“Apparently it was also for a history lesson — a very expensive history lesson,” he said. “Nevertheless, it’s cashing in on public service and it’s the kind of thing that I write about and think has got to be addressed.”

Are you a Georgetown University graduate?
'Cause you're going off the deep end here!
Every single political observer KNOWS EXACTLY why Romney refuses to meet and discuss ANY issue with Gingrich. So your hysterics, your rabid reactions, all of that and more notwithstanding, the American people know why Romney won't meet Gingrich one on one.
Now whether that public holds this against Romney is another issue entirely..........
But knock it off this rabid defense of Romney.
And one more thing, for a guy who supposedly is "for" Santorum, you seem to spend a good deal of time advancing the real interest of the Romney campaign, and not much time actually trying to demonstrate why Santorum should be the guy.
martin j smith| 12.23.11 @ 1:48PM
You have the wrong line of thinking I believe. The issue is simply this whether it is one or one or all in the debate Romney has not gotten the once over that Gingrich and Cain have gotten--question is why not ? He certainly has issues awaiting to be attacked yet some how it is avoided.
This matter to me sours our democracy and our political system. It is a sign of our decay in fact for covering up the truth about our candidates as it was true about Obama himself. The American people need to know who the candidates are WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Otherwise what you have now will get is the most cynical, currupt system that rivals even the worst dictatorships.
Sorry that is the truth.
Dan| 12.23.11 @ 2:08PM
Yup.
This is tremendously unhealthy to our body politick.
This imposition of candidates, this selective targeting for destruction of others, this a priori ruling out of bounds certain issues and certain questions, it's all a forerunner to genuine violence, genuine bloodletting.
Hillyer hasn't a clue what he's trifling with here.
Failure of imagination, want of genuine historical perspective and understanding, too much personal bitterness towards Gingrich that warps his aptitude for dispassionate analysis.
Just a disaster.
As I mentioned earlier, he's gone off the deep end.

Newt is overconfident in his ability to debate. Yes he can talk and explain policy like Bill Clinton. But he has taken so many different positions and put forth so many ideas that a good debater can zero in on some of his outlandish ideas and force him to defend them.
In a one on one debate Newt can be cross exaimined on his views and put on the defensive.
But since he has no money and a small staff his best bet is to rely on the debates.
Dan| 12.23.11 @ 6:47PM
Do you really think that if elected, that Newt would have the time to push those ideas you consider "outlandish."
The guy who takes over after Obama is going to have his hands full, don't ya think, trying to get this economy going, trying to carve into this stranglehold of regulation around Uncle Sam's throat.
There are reasons to be against Newt Gingrich, as there are reasons to be against anybody running for high office. Reagan himself signed into law in California, PRIOR to Roe, an abortion bill. But the many ideas that Newt has isn't one serious reason to vote against him.
This country is up against the wall, and the person selected has to have the ability to take on the establishment.
Nobody up in our party has REPEATEDLY demonstrated a willingness to oppose the establishment as has Gingrich.
For a guy who some deride as an insider, -------------------- why then is the establishment in a panic about him.
Look, the establishment was in a panic about Sarah Palin?
Why? Because she was an insider, or because she was somebody who would challenge their death grip on personnel and policy prescriptions.
Likewise Gingrich.
It's as Rush Limbaugh constantly says, the establishment will reveal who they fear.
And so they have.
If the GOP goes with Romney, ------------------ we're guaranteeing ourselves a problem with a third party, ---------------------------- Trump is already positioning himself.
And who can blame him, who can blame somebody for trying a third party gambit when he knows full well that Romney isn't remotely equal to the challenges of the White House.
Oldefarte| 12.23.11 @ 3:26PM
I'd rather see [instead of a one-on-one debate] one where the debate format required an asked question to be thereafter answered by each and every candidate individually, in order to access viewer knowledge of how each candidate stood on each asked question/subject matter [instead of what happens in these debates of asking differnet candidates different questions on different subjects]!!!!!!!!
Diogenes| 12.23.11 @ 4:52PM
Is Mr. Hillyer actually attempting to compare Romney to Reagan? Because that would be the kind of high comedy usually left to the Paulistas. And to reiterate, Gingrich has been quite evenhanded in debating anyone who wishes. I wouldn't mind seeing him debate Dr. Demento on foreign policy, Santorum on prioritizing social issues, and Bachman on Why Everyone Should Really Hate Newt.

Doesn't anyone here understand politics?
In the early 80s, a crank Republican named McCormack was running for Congress against Tip O'Neill in Cambridge. McCormack followed Tip around, accosting him whenever he could with the question, "Why won't you debate me, Mr. O'Neill? What are you scared of?"
Finally, in a parking lot with the cameras rolling, Tip turned to McCormack and said with a laugh, "You've got 12% name recognition in the district. Why should I help you?"
(O'Neill ended the encounter with the question, "McCormack, huh? How many people with your name are Republicans?")
The political point is, Gingrich's poll numbers are dropping like a stone and Romney would be a fool to throw Gingrich a lifeline. And Romney is not a fool.

" Gingrich praised Freddie Mac model in 2007
Newt Gingrich in 2007 extolled the virtues of Freddie Mac, saying he would be "very cautious" about changing the way the mortgage-finance company's public-private business plan operated.
In an interview placed on Freddie Mac's website, the Republican presidential candidate said the government-sponsored enterprise, or GSE, could serve as a guide for rebuilding the hurricane-ravaged Gulf of Mexico, improving health care and funding space exploration. For decades, Freddie Mac collected profits while benefiting from an implicit taxpayer guarantee of its debt.
"I'm convinced that if NASA were a GSE, we probably would be on Mars today," Gingrich said in the April 24, 2007, Web post.
"While we need to improve the regulation of the GSEs, I would be very cautious about fundamentally changing their role or the model itself," he said."

Martin Smith, case in point: The state of Virginia where, if my resources are accurate (it is difficult to tell for 100% at this point), that candidates Michelle Bachman, Rick Perry, and Newt Gingrich will NOT be on the Virginia GOP primary ballots on March 7th 2012 for Primary Day in Virginia.
As kids say, "Say Whaaaatt?"
Yes, this is correct. The GOP stumbling along with some mind numbing reasoning to have had to have 10,000 signatures assembled in Richmond (something like this) on Monday last.
No list(s) of 10,000 signatures, and one is OFF the ballot.
So nevermind who is debating who, who is in a huff, who is not debating, and who is not invited on stage. The real campaign is being won (LOST, I'd say) in arcane vote BUREAUCRATIC stupidity.
