I know Reid Smith is playing devil’s
advocate but there is no room for civil disobedience (whether
it be from the shoreline of Walden Pond or not) when it comes to
Pvc. Bradley Manning or any other member of the U.S. military.
It’s not like Manning was drafted against his will. He enlisted
into the Army of his own accord, took an oath to obey the
Constitution and the orders of the President of the United States
and of officers above him, underwent basic training and waited to
be deployed to Iraq. He knew what he was getting into. So I don’t
buy the argument that Manning suddenly “believed that he was part
of an unjust war, waged by an unjust government.”
Apparently, Manning had a problem functioning in military life.
It happens. But Manning took it a step further and chose to leak
classified information knowing full well that it would compromise
the safety and security of his fellow soldiers, our allies and the
Iraqis and Afghans working with us. He leaked the information
to Wikileaks, an organization with an explicitly anti-American
political agenda. In the case of the video of the July 2007
airstrike which resulted in civilian deaths including two
journalists from Reuters, Julian Assange edited it for his own
ends. His manipulations should not be accepted at face value.
It is an unavoidable fact of life that people die in war
including civilians and journalists. Our military is fallible but
it is not evil nor is it in the habit of deliberately or wantonly
killing civilians and journalists. To say that we all have blood on
our hands because non-combatants die during war is simply
disingenuous. I have no sympathy whatsoever for Manning. As Smith
acknowledges, Manning is responsible for his actions and must
pay the consequences for them. Unless he was otherwise assisted, no
one else need be blamed for his treachery.

That's right Occam. All those Germans hung for following orders will now be rehabilitated. Occam you advoctate mass murder, unprovoked war, and nuclear Genocide. Those are all war crimes which would have gotten you hung at Nuremberg. Of course you and your hero's like Pollard have a special duty to betray their country for the sake of the putrid pimple on the banks of the Dead Sea. The real traitors are those that sold out our service people by the lying us into Iraq and are trying to lie us into Iran and another world war.

No, he's not, and neither is the other one who infests this site. You focus on them because they are loud and in your face but they are NOT typical of Ron Paul supporters.
Every movement attracts an undesirable element. Sometimes the worst of the worst are really just "false flag trolls" as RSMccain explained here:
http://rsmccain.blogspot.com/2.....rolls.html
If you don't want to give Ron Paul a fair hearing then nobody can force you to. You are within your rights of free speech to claim to be able to read Ron Paul's mind, or to attribute to Ron Paul things that you read from internet trolls.
But if you want to give Ron Paul a fair hearing then go listen to his own words. There are a lot of youtube videos that are nothing but Ron Paul in his own words, speaking from the floor of the House. Or here is a video put together by an actual non-troll Ron Paul supporter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8NhRPo0WAo
Again, I urge you to ignore the trolls and think for yourself. Find out what Ron Paul actually says before you let someone else trick you into making up your mind based on false impressions.
Occam's Tool| 12.22.11 @ 10:41AM
Actually, Jack IS. No significant number of Ron Paul supporters are the least bit polite, as befits a man who praises Bradley Manning and takes donations from StormFront. I lived in his district for 4 years. Anyone who knows Galveston, and could come out in favor of pot legalization, has a screw loose.
RTD| 12.22.11 @ 11:09AM
Ron Paul doesn't "favor pot legalization". He points out that according to the Constitution, this isn't a decision the federal government should be making. It's up to the states.
A lot of people care about the Constitution very selectively, believing in it passionately when it supports something they like, and weaseling when it doesn't fit their personal preferences. A particularly pernicious form of this among social conservatives is a willingness to ignore Article 1 Section 8 when it's clear that the states would not all embrace the social conservative position, and drug laws are a prime example of this.
Ron Paul wants to apply Article 1 Section 8 all the time not just when he agrees with the likely outcome. If you agree, give Paul a fair hearing (and ignore the trolls). If you don't agree, then Ron Paul is not your candidate but there are plenty of other candidates who selectively embrace the Constitution so you just need to find one who selectively embraces the parts you like and rejects the parts you don't.

Mr. Goldstein;
What is your take on government officials who deliberately exaggerate or invent propaganda to support an intervention?
David W| 12.22.11 @ 8:41AM
Would this so called "propaganda" be based upon the best information and intelligence from several countries, including our own, available at the time? Is it based upon trying to glean information from a country that is purposely hiding its intentions, that is doing everything it can to appear to be guilty of what the intelligence indicates? Is it based upon the fact that the leader of the country wanted to maintain the illusion that he had WMDs so he could appear to be powerful in the eyes of his enemies? Is it based upon the fact that many in Congress, who were supposedly intelligent enough to see beyond any lies, supported the call for action??
Or is your calling it propaganda based upon the fact that people sitting comfortably in their easy chairs had the benefit of many years of hindsight and who enjoy taking potshots at a president who did the best he could with what information/data he had at the time?
C Bowen | 12.22.11 @ 9:15AM
Well, no.
I am talking about what Doug Feith and Maloof and traitor Larry Franklin did in the illegal intelligence gathering operation Rumsfeld set up, the Office of Special Plans, when linking Saddam to 9/11 per the instructions of Paul Wolfowitz and then leaking the propaganda to the New York Times which ran it on the frontpage, and finally leaking it, illegally according to the Pentagon, to the Weekly Standard.
More generally, I was thinking about Clinton, Kerry and Albright telling lies about Iraq's WMDs, or lying about the supposed genocide the Orthodox Serbs were committing against the Kosovars.
Anyway, those are specific examples--I was just asking where Mr. Goldstein ranks a hypothetical case of lying one's country into war. And you?
C Bowen | 12.22.11 @ 9:18AM
Further--we know that an agent close to Italian intelligence forged the Nigerian yellow cake documents, but that doesn't explain how the administration illegally routed that past our legal intelligence gathering systems and included the claim in the State of the Union.
Dai Alanye | 12.22.11 @ 2:25PM
If C Bowen had both sense and honesty he/she would acknowledge that the notorious Joe Wilson of Plame/Wilson confirmed the Saddam attempt to get yellow cake. Confirmed it to the CIA, that is, before lying about it in public. The Italian fabulator was unnecessary and incidental except in the minds of certain media types.
Bowen is wrong on most of his/her other assertions as well, but this is all par for the course with Paul cultists.
C Bowen | 12.23.11 @ 5:07PM
Umm no, you are just making things up now and diverting--actually covering up a criminal act.
Who forged the documents and who in the Bush Administration routed them around the legal intelligence apparatus?
Do you even care? No.
Ryan| 12.22.11 @ 9:23AM
How does one "legally" gather intel?
C Bowen | 12.22.11 @ 10:41AM
I guess you are unfamiliar with the general law on the topic and hence are looking to be educated in these here comments, but anyway, a piece of intel is evaluated through a chain of command, with comments and contrarian thought added at each step before it reaches the Executive in the form of, for example, a briefing sheet.
It is against the law for the Executive to attempt to go around this system and substitute his own intelligence giving the appearance it had been legally vetted and reflected the assessment, with dissenting opinion, from the intelligence gathering apparatus.
In effect, the charge is that Rumsfeld set up a separate government with Feith, Maloof and the traitor Larry Franklin, designed to cherry pick info and leak it to allies in the press with the purpose of launching a war against Saddam's Iraq.
It's illegal.
Ed| 12.22.11 @ 1:34PM

Ed,
If you are too lazy to do such work by yourself, should I really consider taking time on the worst comment format board on the net to lay it our for you? Someone, by his own admission, judges war and peace based on what they read in the MSM?
For background: start with the Pentagon report on the matter: http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/.....7-decl.pdf A classic example of the Pentagon investigating itself, but does debunk the AQ-Iraq connection that Feith, Maloof, and traitor Larry Franklin had concocted to lie their country into war.
That is a good start--if you read it, I will attempt as time permits, this dialogue.
Ed| 12.23.11 @ 11:31AM
Again, you sputter about something being illegal. Please provide the citation in the United States Code for your sputtering. Regarding “civil” disobedience, it is not accidental that the classification of those who are not in the military is “civil”ian. The full range of civil rights and civil liberties that the Constitution is designed to protect for civilian citizens is limited for those who volunteer and take and oath to support and defend it.

Manning is a traitor who deserves the needle as much as Pollard, Ames, Hanssen & Walker. Those who make apologies for traitors are either traitors themselves or seditious bastards.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."...Marcus Tullius Cicero
Since Jackass Jackboot is so concerned that a Jew was spying for Israel against us, I wonder if, as a self professed Catholic, he feels about Robert Hanssen's treason? After all, ole Bob Hanssen was a DEVOUT Catholic. And head of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division's Soviet/Russia office. His treason caused almost more deaths than did that of Ames.

Mr. Goldstein;
Quin on the main site this morning suggested that civil disobedience is sometimes to be celebrated--he used the Christmas Eve Truce of the Great War as an example.
Should the soldiers, English and German, who created the truce have been given the firing squad?
And will you be rebutting Quin shortly?
Con Chef (NB) | 12.23.11 @ 8:51AM
They also used to give dead enemy officers full military funerals back then. Trench warfare meant that the opposing sides were less than 60 yards apart. After long days of stalemate in these conditions, the opponents got to know each other pretty well. In the Christmas "armistice," the Germans put up their Christmas trees on the parapets of their trenches & the sides sung carols back & forth. Eventually, they came out & traded cigarettes. The main reason these "truces" were negotiated to bury the dead in the no man's land separating their trenches.
In NO WAY is this the equivalent of what Manning the Traitor did. What he did may have already, or will in the future, cost lives. If you had to compare the type of intel he was giving to any other spy, he'd be like John Walker. He gave away sensitive communications to an obviously anti American group. Give the little bastard a cigarette & a blindfold.
C Bowen | 12.23.11 @ 1:17PM
You are bringing up Manning, not me.
I am commenting on the posturing in this article from the Canadian author.
And during the Christmas Truce, they played a soccer game, and had Mass (in Latin.)
There was an investigation on both sides when word of the truce reached the brass, and the units involved were scattered and rotated out.
It was after all a crime--fraternization.
