The Spectacle Blog

Yesterday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas travelled to Turkey where he met with 11 Palestinians who had been freed from Israeli jails as part of the deal which saw the release of Corporal Gilad Schalit back in October.

Amongst them was Amna Muna (a.k.a. Mona Jaud Awana) whom Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describes as a “terrorist temptress.” In January 2001, Muna lured 16-year old Ophir Rahum over the Internet to Ramallah for what he thought would be a romantic rendez-vous. Instead, Muna set up Rahum for an ambush by three Palestinian gunmen who shot him more than fifteen times. Muna was sentenced to life in prison in 2003 for her role in planning Rahum’s murder.

Needless to say, Netanyahu is furious with Abbas for meeting with a woman convicted of murder who told investigators of her delight as Rahum was in the throes of death.

When you couple Abbas’ provocation with Hamas today agreeing to join the PLO it begs this question. Where is the Obama Administration? After all, both Hillary Clinton and Leon Panetta have been falling all over themselves publicly berating Israel in recent weeks. But so far I hear only the chirping of crickets. Well, it’s about what I would expect from an administration that is angry with Netanyahu for building houses in Jerusalem but not angry with Abbas for meeting with a murderer of an Israeli teenager.

I agree with you, Aaron. But what can you expect from an administration that is so far to the Left that they only appear Conservative on foreign policy in comaprison to Dr Ron Paul, "Treason's Friend."

If Romney supported Manning, then it is finis to him. Unlike you, I'm not in lockstep to anyone, and I don't wear tinfoil, Clint.

But I don't see anything when I click Romney and Bradley Manning. Paul, on the other hand, is a done deal. He supports Manning.

I did hear that the first sign of US government discontent with the prisoner swap was when they discovered some of the victims were US citizens.

I wonder how much USG pressure was exerted to achieve the prisoner swap.

mzk1| 12.22.11 @ 6:19PM

Since when does the US government ever care about US citizens? Yassir Arafat ordered the murder of two American diplomats, and the US had no trouble with him. Squeezing Israel trumps American lives, any day.

mzk1| 12.22.11 @ 6:22PM

In case anyone misunderstood, Yassir Arafat formed the "Palestinian Liberation Organization". the "only legitimate representative of the 'Palestinian people', BEFORE 1967, when Jordan and Egypt controlled the West Bank and Gaza, respectively.

Thses are the people every US President had forced Israel to make nice to.

Do you expect to hear anything from the PLO hugger? Or the bower to the Islamic princes. Pleeze spare me.

This is why I can not support Ron Paul.He seems to be unable to see or care about the evil and danger in the world.

The Constitution is fake issue here. If everyone understood the constitution to require a declaration of war from Congress, Bush I would have obtained one on Iraq and Bush II on Afganistan. (Bush II would not have needed one on Iraq; we've been at war with them since Bush I.)

It's not that Paul doesn't want to get entangled, it's that he says we should be friends to all countries. He is either clueless or entirely amoral.

"When you couple Abbas' provocation with Hamas today agreeing to join the PLO it begs this question. Where is the Obama Administration?"

No, it invites that question. To beg a question is to make a statement that presumes a particular answer to it, without proof.

For instance, "Does racism explain Republicans' irrational opposition to Obama?" begs the question of whether Republican opposion to Obama is irrational.

AVCurmudgeon| 12.29.11 @ 6:41PM

Aaron, I respect your writing and agree the visit is an insult to Israel (which is probably why Hillary applauds it). But please ... it does not "beg (any) question." To "beg the question" is to assume as a fact that which must be proven; it does not mean "raise the question." I know that sportscasters have done their best to render this phrase meaningless, but surely you can do better than to join them.
