The Spectacle Blog

I thank everybody for the wonderful reader response to my little poll the other day. Accordingly, I announce that I will cast my vote in the Media Research Center contest, for worst quote of the year, for this astonishing piece of smoke-up-Obama’s rear end puffery:

1) “Can we just enjoy Obama for a moment? Before the policy choices have to be weighed and the hard decisions have to be made, can we just take a month or two to contemplate him the way we might contemplate a painting by Vermeer or a guitar lick by the early-seventies Rolling Stones or a Peyton Manning pass or any other astounding, ecstatic human achievement? Because twenty years from now, we’re going to look back on this time as a glorious idyll in American politics, with a confident, intelligent, fascinating president riding the surge of his prodigious talents from triumph to triumph…. ‘I am large, I contain multitudes,’ Walt Whitman wrote, and Obama lives that lyrical prophecy…. Barack Obama is developing into what Hegel called a ‘world-historical soul,’ an embodiment of the spirit of the times. He is what we hope we can be.” — Esquire’s Stephen Marche in a column for the magazine’s August 11 issue, “How Can We Not Love Obama? Because Like It or Not, He Is All of Us.”

Glorious idyll in American politics? Did he really say that? Wow!! What a loser this Stephen Marche is!!

Nah, 20 years from now, we're going to look back on this President (hopefully we're still a United Country 20 years from now?) and it'll be clearer to us all than it is today, that Obama's the worst President this Nation has ever suffered under. And if you think that Carter's been a bad former President, you haven't seen anything yet!! This crybaby is going to set a new low for former President's, in his attempt to rewrite the history of his time in office. And if you think he's blamed Bush too many times for what gone wrong as President so far, just wait until he's out of office and loses his restraint, and starts blaming his bad Golf scores on George too (I hear he cheats at Golf by the way, but that shouldn't come as a surprise). But at least 20 years from now, we'll all know the truth about this guy, the "real" hidden truth about him, the truth that the MSM completely ignored back in 2007/8. But you can't hide the truth forever!! And once he's out of office, a whole bunch of books are going to be written about this guy, and I can't wait for the revelations soon to be revealed about him, although I won't be shocked by any one of them (even Larry S?) What are they going to say? That he really was a Commie after all? Wow!! What a shock!! I really had no idea!! I just thought he was playing a Commie on TV!! He's a very good actor!!

Yup, he's a Commie Symp, that's for sure. That's who ALL of his friends are. When they aren't Terrorists, or Terrorist Commies.

The only man running for President that is more Leftwing consistently from a Foreign Policy perspective is Ron Paul.

Quin,
How did this particular quote get missed in the AS magazine's recent "Current Wisdom" section? It certainly belongs there with the other "Assorted Jackasses!"

Esquire magazine is a mother lode of this kind of garbage writing. I must remind myself to scan through it every now and then and look for similar suitable imbecilities to submit to AS when I visit my local Barnes&Noble; for a coffee.

This really has to be the worst quote of the year, possibly of any year.

Can anyone come up with anything comparable from a prior time?

Oldefarte| 12.4.11 @ 10:44AM

Possibly Lewinsky could have said it better, but IN HER ADORATION, SHE WAS UNABLE TO SPEAK AND ???? AT THE SAME TIME NO DOUBT!!!!!!!!

Dai Alanye | 12.4.11 @ 2:35PM

Are you positive this quote didn't come from The Onion?

AVCurmudgeon| 12.4.11 @ 4:46PM

Stephen Marche must be John Cleese in drag.

Then again, given the shrinking quality of political leadership on both sides of the aisle, we must admit the possibility that 20 years from now Obama just might look good. Sleep well.

Sir

This is why I voted for marche:

'Barack Obama is developing into what Hegel called a 'world-historical soul,' an embodiment of the spirit of the times. He is what we hope we can be'.

The comment is candid!

Hegel is the philosophical root of Marxism.

Thank you for sparing me the time to refresh my memory on who this individual is. Hegelian philosophy is also connected with the new world order club
