The Spectacle Blog

Yesterday, quarterback Donovan McNabb asked for and was granted his release by the Minnesota Vikings.

As I write this, NFL teams have about ten minutes to claim McNabb before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

McNabb says he’s open to any takers but none has been forthcoming. Earlier today, the Dallas Cowboys declined to put in a claim for McNabb. The Chicago Bears aren’t interested either. I can’t see the Houston Texans being interested since they signed Jake Delhomme a couple of days ago.

McNabb’s hasn’t played since October 16th when the Vikings were trounced by the Bears at Soldiers Field 39-10. He was benched in the middle of the game in favor of Christian Ponder. The Vikings aren’t much better under Ponder than they were with McNabb. Then again McNabb is 35 while Ponder is 23. The Vikings can plan for the long term around Ponder and can’t do that with McNabb.

Of course, with five more weeks left in the NFL season another QB could go down. But that doesn’t mean they’ll come knocking on McNabb’s door. McNabb’s career has been in precipitous decline since he left the Philadelphia Eagles last year. After bad stints with the Washington Redskins and now the Vikings, McNabb’s days as a starting quarterback in the NFL are probably over barring absolute desperation.

Here’s a thought. Let’s say nobody in the NFL wants McNabb. If he stays in shape over the winter and spring, the CFL could come calling next summer. Could you imagine McNabb calling plays in a Saskatchewan Roughriders or a Hamilton Tiger-Cats uniform?

Aaron,
Why don't they begin a seniors league? McNabb could QB one team, with Favre QB'ing the other. Jerry Rice could star on one team. We could give them an hour halftime to catch their breath........

Apparently you don't mind foregoing your chance to be an ESPN commentator, or an NFL owner. Of course, it didn't bother that gal who wrote derogatory things in the Washington Postabout McNabb about a year ago either.

No, the guys the Bears should be nabbing is the one the Broncos just let go---he knows their system really well---Orton. He's an adequate, if unspectacular, quarterback.

Gosh---the Chiefs picked him up. My bad.

Suggestion to Mcnabb:

Getya one of those oddly-cut suits only pro athletes are able to acquire, learn to speak like a football "analyst" by using out-dated cliche's and to make the sport appear more complicated than it really is, put a fancy pen in your hand (this is very important) while using the appropriate hand gestures, adopt a unique facial hair style, and...last but not least... speak louder and faster than your studio buddies - it wont matter if you make sense.

Boom, you've got a ten to fifteen year career on ESPN.

As usual...Rush was right.

Westie| 12.3.11 @ 11:53AM

Rush is always right, maybe McNabb can go to work for the EIB Network.

I'll remember to vote for Donovan on DWTS. Oh yeah...I've never watched even a single minute of DWTS. I guess my days of seeing him on TV are over. Good luck with the rest of your life, Donovan!

I'm sure he'll be fine. McNabb has always had a ready smile and an ability to negotiate a political minefield no QB should have to deal with. Pretty sure, if he doesn't want to Dance with the Stars, ESPN will give him a color gig for college football and he can probably do that for the rest of his life, given his good-natured personality, reasonable articulateness, and ESPN's falling all over itself to make sure he and other minority QBs look good. I'd say his future is assured.

He'll probably make a better commentator than he was a player. I always thought he was pretty good as a QB for the Eagles. I'm sure he will do fine.

Rush was entirely correct and was fired from ESPN for telling the truth about this worthless excuse for an NFL QB!!!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 12.3.11 @ 3:11PM

PS: Maybe some ESPN execs will seek a release possibly [and maybe THE COW WILL JUMP OVER THE MOON WHILE THE DISH WILL RUN AWAY WITH THE SPOON ALSO]!!!!!
