That was a waste of 5 minutes of my life - a truly weak argument for Romney.

" Unsurprisingly, the suggestion that the establishment wants to wrap Romney in a cloak of inevitability only makes Tea Party types more combative. “We will fight against it being a slam dunk,” asserts Pam Wohlschlegel, Florida coordinator for Tea Party Patriots. “It’s not a done deal. And, I tell you, if Romney continues on his track of dissing Tea Partiers, it’s not going to work in his favor!”
Even inside the Beltway, some conservatives are getting verrrrry nervous at the prospect of Romney capturing the nomination. At the offices of FreedomWorks, the Tea Party–promoting group chaired by former House Republican leader Dick Armey, there is much talk of what can and should be done to stop the former governor. “We have strategy discussions all the time about, how important is it that Mitt Romney doesn’t get the nomination—for the party, for the cause? And how involved and engaged should we be to prevent him from doing so?” says Brendan Steinhauser, the group’s top field organizer. “I’ve been arguing it’s vital that we take him out.”

Romney: Nein, Nein, Nein.

So Romney's the man because he's never been divorced and he's to the right of Bush and McCain? Awesome standards there. Unfortunately for him, most in the GOP have no idea whether he stands for anything he says or just tells the voters what they want to hear. Does he really think that capital gains cuts limited to people without money to invest is going to improve the economy? That after four years of Obama emulating FDR what we need is a new Smoot-Hawley bill to teach China a lesson?
We can only hope he's just pandering.
Al Adab| 12.2.11 @ 6:37PM
He is to the Left of McCain. Now that would be a great move.

Continuation of original post...
Occasionally Romney's father George enters into the '12 campaign. Let's have a look back circa mid 1960's. Romney served as governor of Michigan from 1963-1969 and introduced Michigan's first state income tax. Romney was strong supporter of the American Civil Rights movement yet refused to participate in a large scale Michigan civil rights march alongside Martin Luther King in June 1963 citing no political activity on Sunday’s. Yet one year later Romney conducted a Sunday press conference of a political nature stating he will do everything within his power to keep Goldwater from becoming the party's presidential nominee failing this refused to support Barry Goldwater’s 1964 presidential campaign. Then the key issue of its day, the Vietnam War, a Romney flip flop ended his political career. The frontrunner post 1966 elections for the GOP nomination in 1968, Romney supported the war after a 1965 visit to Vietnam stating the war was morally right and necessary. Yet in 1967 stating he had the greatest brainwashing that anybody can get and turned against the war coinciding with the gradual increase of anti-war sentiment. In the meantime criticisms abounded Romney had difficulty articulating important topics “manages to turn self-expression into a positive ordeal" and then later correcting himself while maintaining he was not flip flopping. In summary Mitt’s father the 1968 frontrunner just didn’t have what it takes to win his party nomination, his flip flopping on key issues, his liberal bent like imposing a state income tax and his inability to articulate what he really stands for ended his presidential aspirations. Son Mitt failed to learn from his father’s mistakes, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Like father like son in Mitt’s case the daily double of defeat.
Chuck| 12.2.11 @ 7:03PM
Thanks for the history lesson. I do see the parallels with Romneycare and Obamacare. Mitt fully supports Romneycare the template for Obamacare but opposes Obamacare something rank and file Republicans absolutely detest. The flip flopping of both father and son on key issues is right on the money.

There is no case to be made for Romney. The Rockefeller/Romney wing of the GOP has opposed the Conservative movement from its inception. Even were he the only GOP candidate who could win the general, what would be the point? A Romney administration would not reverse the Obama jugernaut but would seek accomodation with its effects. The collapse of America would then occur on a GOP watch and history would put the blame in the wrong corner. It would be another thousand years of tyranny and dark ages before mankind rediscovered the "blessings of Liberty".
teflon93| 12.2.11 @ 7:41PM
Why not nominate Obama? He's clearly electable, independents are drawn to him, the media loves him, a GOP senate and house would keep him in check, and he immediately puts all blue states in play for GOP pickups in the general election.
If those are arguments for nominating Romney, the case for nominating Obama is even stronger, since Obama is of course immune to Axelrod's smear machine.

We probably should just go and nominate any liberal, since the GOP establishment is convinced that the only way to win is be a New England liberal republican. In a nutshell they're saying we can we by running marginally to the left of the left. Why bother, just run a real lib? What a joke.
Too many around here are carrying water for this moron. Pretty lame rationale for Romney, and here I though Ponnuru was smart.

This should be nominated for common sense comment of the year here. I couldn't have said it better. The Stupid Party will never learn. I will be writing in Sarah Palin in November of 2012.

" Mark Meckler, a co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, singled out Romney's Massachusetts health care plan as a primary reason why the national front-runner for the Republican nomination "clearly has difficulties" with members of the movement.
"He's attached to RomneyCare and has done a poor job of distancing himself from that," Meckler told reporters at a breakfast in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. "I think he probably squandered an incredible opportunity and was probably the best guy to say, ‘I tried this and it failed,' and he has not done a good job of that. So he has taken positions that are contrary to what the average Tea Partier would take -- positions on man-made global warming, positions on energy efficiency. So I think he's in real trouble with the Tea Party base."

Romney will never win the GOP nomination, with his controversial stance on issues, and he remains a distraction to the GOP chances for 2012, while Herman Cain is ending his campaign, a great news for the GOP, clearing the path for Gov Rick Perry, who can defeat Obama in a landslide.
SCPOret| 12.3.11 @ 11:09AM
We've had enough of the Rockefeller republican psuedo-conservatives. They have no core values, therefore they have no firm positions and can flip-flop on anything, without even a twinge of conscience.
If you're going to vote for a liberal then you might as well vote Obama, at least you know what you're getting.

This is sadly pure truth, in that if Romney becomes the Republican nominee, conservatives, independents, moderates and all other sane voters will [or should] have no other choice than to vote for him [similar to 2008]. Anyone not understanding this fact is simply thinking '''''stupidly''''''. It's the Democrats, stupids [and more specifically the current regime that has conquered this country and is in the process of systematically destroying same]. This country does not have four more years left within its existence if this current president is re-elected, and everyone needs to get their head our of their rear end and contemplate same. If it becomes a choice of Romney versus Obama, there is only one choice available. Understanding that everyone has a personal preference/choice of a Republican candidate at thie early point in the election cycle, but also understand that once November approaches and there are only two choices available [Obama and the Republican], the vote has to be made that will stand the best chance of saving this country from total destruction!!!!!!!!!!!!
