Via David Weigel, here's a problematic video for Newt Gingrich:

So now there's video of Newt explicitly recommending an individual mandate. Hard to see this enhancing Newt's appeal as the not-Romney.

Quin Hillyer,
" Gingrich has supported an individual mandate for almost 18 years, has written in favor of it as recently as 2008, and even several times this year has defended it in concept."

Gingrich is one of the most pro-defense candidates up there. His advisors are straight out of the Dick Cheney school of foreign policy. People who like that sort of foreign policy aren't going to think much of Ron Paul's ideas about foreign policy. You'd find more support for Ron Paul's ideas about Israel, military bases in foreign countries, etc., among the Occupy Wall Street crowd than you would among the sort of people who like what Gingrich has to say about such things.

Cain dropping out would be even worse for Paul. Cain's supporters are mostly social conservatives, and the more people learn about Ron Paul's ideas about Israel, gay marriage, legalizing drugs, prostitution, etc., the less chance he has of picking up any support from social conservatives. There are some very good reasons that Ron Paul has higher favorable numbers among those who describe themselves as liberal to very liberal than any other GOP candidate.

If you want to help Ron Paul then get non-Republicans to register as Republicans so they can vote in the primaries.

"If you are Democrat you can register Republican just to vote in the primaries, and then reregister as Democrat for the national election. To all democrats: Imagine having no neo-Con Republican voice in the November elections. Just Ron Paul advocating bringing the troops home and civil liberties!"

The Tea Party includes a lot of libertarians and libertarian-leaning Republicans.

But there are good reasons that Tea Party support in Iowa has not coalesced around Ron Paul. His position on Israel may make sense to you but a lot of people in the Republican party put a high priority on defending and supporting Israel, rightly or wrongly. A lot of Republicans would also strongly disagree with Ron Paul on things like gay marriage, legalizing drugs, etc.

Ron Paul Endorsed by Cedar Rapids Tea Party Founder
Thursday, November 24, 2011

2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul was endorsed today by Cedar Rapids Tea Party founder Tim Pugh on the first day of the Congressman’s two-day visit to Iowa.

“Ron Paul has an unwavering stance in defense of the Constitution, a conviction to the cause of freedom and liberty, a firm belief in a balanced budget, and devotion to a strong free market economy and a sound monetary policy. He believes in a strong national defense, and not as the policeman of the world,” said Mr. Pugh.

Newt Gingrich is a clown, phony and completely unelectable like John McCain. Mitt is the only Republican candidate with nationwide appeal, appealing to independents, conservative democrats and a wide spectrum of the GOP (Tea Party and pro-life excluded).

Bill| 11.29.11 @ 3:53PM

How about Gov Rick Perry ?

Chuck| 11.29.11 @ 3:54PM

According to the early primary polls your boy is slumping, third place in Iowa, barely second in SC and in a statistical tie in NH. Is history repeating itself? Romney was the man in late '07 then crashed in December. The polls say so again this time and we thank the Democrats for their timely anti-Romney ad to remind us what a fraud he really is.

Diogenes| 11.29.11 @ 4:09PM

The problem with Mitt isn't that we can't be sure where he stands, it's that he might actually be telling the truth instead of playing politics. Capital gains cuts only for those who don't have the money to invest? Because the middle class needs help? The middle class needs jobs, Governor. Maybe extending the cuts to people who could create them might be a start.

And as far as his China policy-congratulations. You've managed to find the only aspect of 1930s economic policy Obama hasn't recycled to make your own. Because Smoot-Hawley was such a smashing success.

Hopefully he's just Romneying for the voters and doesn't actually believe this nonsense. At least with Newt you know he always says what he means. He's stuck his foot in his mouth too many times to be dissembling.

Bill| 11.29.11 @ 3:53PM

Newt was wrong then and now, perhaps forever.

Diogenes| 11.29.11 @ 4:01PM

Everything he says in that clip (and the longer video it was cropped from) is accurate.

And I've yet to hear any of his detractors propose any workable solution to the problem of catastrophic health non-coverage (which is all he has supported 'mandating', and offsetting with tax credits and incentives).

WM| 11.29.11 @ 4:40PM

There is no "problem of catastrophic health non-coverage." People are free to get it or not. There is, however, a national problem with crybabies getting increasingly blatant about their irrational demands.

It used to be that the left demanded health care as a right. Now they demand health *insurance* as a right. It's bad enough that anyone agrees with the former. For anyone to float the latter is evil. How can this hypocrite have demanded an end to welfare, then advocate wealth redistribution for health insurance, after grandstanding against the people who would receive this loot because they are getting it now by means of failing to pay their hospital bill? What principle justifies his outrage? Are we to go to combat over the issue of whether people loot willy-nilly versus in an organized fashion?

Diogenes| 11.29.11 @ 5:19PM

"There is no "problem of catastrophic health non-coverage." People are free to get it or not. "

And when they decline to be responsible preferring instead to seek treatment at the public expense, that doesn't create problems for the medical industry, taxpayers and society as a whole?

Okay then.

Proud Mormon| 11.29.11 @ 4:32PM

This anti-Romney bigotry is disgusting. Yes he's slipping in the polls due to widespread deceit from right-wing fanatics and now the Democrats in a totally fallacious TV ad. A new political cabal has formed between the right and left against Mitt. But I predict Mitt will overcome this and surge forward knocking out the Tea Party once and for all and beating Obama.

Mike W| 11.29.11 @ 9:05PM

I am not sure if you are a Mormon but I really don't care what whacked out superstition you , Mitt, or Huckabee or anyone else believe in. If you are a Mormon , are you supporting Mitt because he is one of your tribe?

Clint| 11.29.11 @ 7:28PM

Even inside the Beltway, some conservatives are getting verrrrry nervous at the prospect of Romney capturing the nomination. At the offices of FreedomWorks, the Tea Party–promoting group chaired by former House Republican leader Dick Armey, there is much talk of what can and should be done to stop the former governor. “We have strategy discussions all the time about, how important is it that Mitt Romney doesn’t get the nomination—for the party, for the cause? And how involved and engaged should we be to prevent him from doing so?” says Brendan Steinhauser, the group’s top field organizer. “I’ve been arguing it’s vital that we take him out.”
