Romney & The South

In his observations about the GOP race, Jim Antle argues “back to back Mitt Romney wins in Iowa and New Hampshire would be very hard to overcome.”

That assessment looks good on paper (and for that matter online.) But at this point I just can’t see South Carolina much less the rest of the South embracing Romney even if he does win Iowa and New Hampshire.

I can't see ANYONE embracing Mitt Romney.

PattyMor| 11.11.11 @ 5:43PM

No one embraces Romney except the Republican elites. But they win nomination after nomination because of open primaries, lots o' money, and conservative votes divided among several candidates. If conservatives would/could settle on just ONE alternative, we can beat the Republican machine. Divided, we get another John McLame.

If Romney were alive during the Civil War and serving in the military a stretch to say the least half his uniform would be gray the other blue. In the company of blue he supports the Emancipation Proclamation and in the company of gray he supports state's rights and the ardent defender of slavery. In the meantime during the 1860 political campaign his father, a presidential candidate, trying to appeal to southern voters claims he was brainwashed by Uncle Tom’s Cabin as an excuse for his opposition to slavery.

The Tea Party Rebellion Is Here.

Well, if the tea party is so all-fired popular, then it's supporters will sweep to victory in 2012 and its nominee will be sitting in the Oval Office come January 2013.

If not, then it's just a vast RINO conspiracy, is that it?

Garner the votes, win the primaries and the general election, take office, and change the world.

Fine. Everything else is hot air.

The great South is the base for the GOP. If we lose south, we lose America. South is all about freedom and opportunity, unlike the Northeast and the Pacific, we don't have those liberal jombies in the South, that's the great thing about the South. Remember the great Civil War, there's no chance for liberals or unions thugs either. Mitt needs to win the South, at least SC and FL; otherwise he'll be done for 2012.

I agree w/ Mr. Goldstein. I don't sense a lot of love for Mitt amongst my neighbors here in south-eastern Virginia. Personally, I am looking very seriously at Newt. None of the Republicans inspire confidence, but I'd love to see Newt debate President "We can't wait". But in reality I expect the Kenyan prince to be re-elected. The best we might hope for is a Republican majority in the House and Senate and, again, I don't say that out of any love for the Republicans, I just pray that they'll be able to rein in the Obama/Reid/Pelosi/Holder/Geithner cabal.

No, no, no...you guys are thinking about this all wrong...we need to take our castor oil and stop being so emotional. Romney is a true conservative and he is the only person truly vetted. We need a moderate liberal progressive to beat Obama. Yes, I know the Tea party and most of the electorate do not want him but that is just too damn bad, we elites know better than you. See it is just impossible to elect a conservative constitutional Republican. That is why we have worked so hard in destroying all of them and anything close to that. Quin has been a great help. Remind me to send him a note of thanks and some tickets to the next GOP RNC DC gala.

Well, these grass roots conservatives and the public just don't understand how the country works. It is just inevitable. Liberalism and the left wing can not be stopped. Yes, we really are just going to have to accept the decline, all we can hope for is a slower death. See, the DNC is going to throw everything they got at us. We really cannot do much about it but duck and cover. If we do have our Romney, and we WILL, I say we have a slim chance of winning as the Dems are just too smart for us.

So, get your little republican butts in line and stop all this nonsense about the constitution, smaller government, accountable government, free markets, and national soveriegnty.

Well, got to go! Ta Ta. Romney 2012!

axbucxdu| 11.12.11 @ 1:02PM

I like it. Sums it up perfectly.

Cain has been building deep roots in the South for this very reason. A few weeks ago most republican pundits were baffled as to why Cain would spend time touring and speaking in the south. DUH! Cain is anticipating that old model is no longer applicable in the current economic and political climate, and that he can weather any early Romney victories and make a run for the nomination by destroying Romney in the south and midwest. I don't know if Cain can survive a long tern Gingrich surge, but I think Cain is smart to make this play as the path to the nomination. I don't see mitt being able to pull off a McCain this cycle. Fool the conservatives once...twice...nah

Rogue Elephant| 11.12.11 @ 12:57AM

Iowa? New Hampshire?! Primary voters of other states should ignore these insignificant and unrepresentative states. Fer Pete's sake.

martin j smith| 11.12.11 @ 10:25AM

Do each of these states have the population of Brooklyn NY or maybe The Bronx NY ? That is some joke you got there. Pleeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Teflon93| 11.12.11 @ 5:29PM

If you ever managed to read The Constitution, you'd see a bit in there about the Electoral College, which is how presidents get elected.

We'll wait.

Teflon93| 11.12.11 @ 5:27PM

Mitt Romney's appeal is limited to the Democrat enclaves in which most FauxCon pundits live. He won't carry any of these states because given a choice between a liberal Democrat and a liberal Republican they always choose the liberal Democrat.

Romney's other problem is that here in the South we won't support a Northeastern liberal period.

So aside from the red states not turning out for him and the blue states turning out for his opponent, there is simply no path to victory for him in the general election absent Obama getting impeached. Of course, Romney would NEVER support impeachment either, so there you have it.
