Looks like Newtmentum is underway: In a new McClatchy
poll of Republicans, Newt Gingrich has overtaken Herman Cain to
take second place behind Romney. The results look like
this:
-Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, 23 percent;
-Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives,
19 percent;
-Cain, the former restaurant executive, 17 percent;
-Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, 10 percent;
-Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, 8 percent;
-Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, 5 percent;
-Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, 1 percent;
-Former Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah, 1 percent;
-Undecided, 17 percent.
I wonder what Tim Pawlenty thinks when he sees poll results like
these.

Pawlenty thinks he could have edged Cong. Bachmann and polled 6%.

In May, when Gingrich sharply criticized Paul Ryan’s Medicare reform plan, FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey reminded National Review that Gingrich had been a serial offender:
Citing Gingrich’s support of Dede Scozzafava in the 2009 congressional election in New York’s 23rd district, his backing of Medicare Part D and TARP, and his commercial with Nancy Pelosi about climate change, Armey observes that “Newt entered the race with serious ground to make up with these 2 million Tea Party activists.”…
Brendan Steinhauser, director of Federal and State Campaigns for FreedomWorks, reports that the Tea Partiers he’s talked to are “irate” at Gingrich… “I never met a single Tea Party activist that supported Newt Gingrich for president,” he adds."

I'll bet Pawlenty is thinking, "Golly, if only I had shown some guts and charisma I could have been ahead of Ron Paul."

The last conservative standing will beat Romney. If you add Gingrich, Cain, Paul, Perry and Bachmann, you get 59%. Very few of these will go to Romney. By God, it could be Newt!
And you can talk about his "baggage," but you know what? It's already out there. They can't dredge it up any more. It's done. It's old news. There aren't going to be any new revelations or new smear campaigns: he's been in the public eye for 20 years.
A debate between Gingrich and Obama would likely be the most satisfying television event of my life.

Pawlenty probably thinks, hey, I could have backed down to Gingrich in the debates, too!
Anyway, Pawlenty fascination is confined to the loonier fringes of Powerline. The real news is that Cain, as they say in the airline business, is beginning his descent. Jennifer Rubin, avowed anti-Cainiac, is crowing that he'll miss the top three in Iowa, and she may be right.

Bore Pawlenty isn't on anyone's radar.

You found one poll that knocks Cain out of the top spot, and you parade it around as evidence that the Cain Train is slowing.
Let's see how you feel in two weeks.

Let me be a wet blanket.
"The survey of 347 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents was conducted Tuesday-Thursday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

PS - If you think that Gingrich can win in the GE, you're delusional.
I actually like the guy, but he is what he is.
Brendan| 11.11.11 @ 12:46PM
Pawlenty lost the first time when he backed down from his Oromneycare crack, which really wasn't that tough. He then backed out completely when things got tough. He's a nice, smart guy, but he is not ready to run against demon obama and his minions, never mind be the president.
Paul McGrath| 11.11.11 @ 1:01PM
I think Gingrich, Romney and to a lesser extent Cain would all beat Obama. One thing needs to be understood. The attacks on the Republican nominee are going to be as furious, dishonest, and deplorable as anything we've ever seen.
Romney will be able to stand up to it because he's been in the public eye and because the guy is as clean a politician as there is. Gingrich can stand up to it because he is by far the most articulate and because he's been putting up with this for twenty years.
But can Cain stand up to it? He has not been in the public eye until now and although he's held up okay against these harrassment charges, there were a couple of moments when he lost his cool. If he thinks there is pressure now, he hasn't seen anything. And God help him if there are other skeletons in the closet, even trivial ones.
That is my major concern with Cain.

" Ron Paul Still Top Tier; Some Ponder a Third-Party Bid
Despite an utter lack of fair coverage in the mainstream media, Texas Congressman Ron Paul continues to hold his own in the race for the GOP primary. In fact, Paul may be doing even better than some are aware. According to a survey conducted by Real Clear Politics, Ron Paul is the only other GOP presidential contender besides frontrunner Mitt Romney to have a chance at defeating President Obama in a 2012 presidential race."

Ok, so now we know that the pick for McClatchey is RINO elitists. Ron Paul is not, and never will be top tier. No amount of copying and pasting obscure comments is going to change that. Scozzafava and Healthcare mandates have sealed Newt's fate in my mind. It just underlined the fact along with attacking the Ryan plan, That he is not a conservative. He is a Republican Elitist
