Joe: I think Goldberg is onto something regarding Governor Pawlenty, who I’ve often rooted for, via this magazine. Towards the end, he was out-charmed and perhaps equally, out-spent (though lack of funds was the lesser story, it’s still integral). It’s also why I made the case via The Atlantic a couple months ago that GOP contenders should spend fewer resources in one place—Iowa—and spread their own wealth, time, and media around. Perhaps if Pawlenty had done that, we’d still be listening to his no-nonsense thoughts on spending and hockey.

Pawlenty beat himself by first refusing to back up a solid criticism of Obamneycare, and then by making a wild-eyed attack on Bachmann for no reason other than she was a step ahead in the polls.

In other words, the man followed a stupid strategy. And for this we should want him back in the race? The logic escapes me.

Pawlenty was a tool of the GOP establishment, his mission - destroy Bachmann. Bye, bye Pawlenty. Don't let the door hit you where the
good Lord split you.

Not to mention, he ran to Mitt Romney to pay off his campaign debts.

Logic seems to fly out the window during campaign season.

Doesn't the very fact that he caved so easily mean he's not ready for either the rigors of a national campaign - or the rigors of the Presidency?

I initially was drawn to the T-Paw campaign, but my enthusiasm waned after he went on Kudlow's show and failed to offer the coherent pro-growth policy prescriptions Larry was yearning to hear.

I think Poor Lenty is a cowards and pulled himself out. As for Huntsman he is a defintie NO for me and that means at least as bad or even worse than Obama because his phonyness is too great to quanitify..

And had the GOP arranged a sensible, mature, in a word, SANE selection process, we wouldn't now be saddled with this group of 2d raters.

But hey, why change when we've enjoyed such success with McCain, with Dole, with the Bush apparat.

Dan:
Along with you, my regret is not the candidates, but the internicine bloodbath that is making it unlikely the eventual nominee can win. We do ourselves in every time.
