If there are to be more Republican presidential candidate
debates, it’s clearly time to cull the herd.
After sparing us for one debate, Rick Perry reprised his
bitchy wife shtick in Las Vegas last night with a baseless harangue
that Mitt Romney hired illegal aliens to trim his hedges. Rick
Santorum once again did his two-year-old-having-a-tantrum
impersonation. And poor Michelle Bachman is looking more and more
like the news confused Emily Litella, the frumpy character played
by Gilda Radner on Saturday Night Live. (“What’s all this
about saving Soviet jewelry”?) It’s time voters said “Never mind”
to Michelle and allow her to return to being a good congresswoman
for Minnesota.
Jon Hunstman wasn’t with the show last night, handing out
some self-serving statement about how Nevada was messing up the
primary sequence so he couldn’t sully himself by appearing there.
Show of hands of those who missed him…. I thought so. Me
neither.
The debates have been lively this year, and as a result
have gotten good ratings. But listening to supernumeraries like
Santorum and Bachmann just takes time away from the candidates who
know a thing or two and have a chance at the nomination. And they
say embarrassing stuff.
Newt got in a few more zingers again last night. He
probably has no shot at the nomination. But he’s done well in the
debates, saying insightful things in a pithy and amusing way.
Perhaps there should be a special ground rule for this election
cycle, to wit: no matter who wins the presidential nomination, Newt
gets to debate Barack O’Barnum. Now that would be fun.

Danke Schoen, Darling Wayne!
Thank you for all the joy and Pain!
Mitt said and did all his embarrassing stuff before he declared. Now he is trying to run away from it in a dignified manner.
After he gets the nomination the press will bring them back up and we will have to listen to it again.

Why not Newt? Bachmann, Perry and now Cain have each had their chance to be the "not Romney" of the moment. They're really pathetic candidates (thank you, tea party!) so if they could have a few weeks in the sun why not Newt? He's delivered consistent, solid performances in all the debates. He's got some flaws but not as deep as Mitt. And Newt's the only "not Romney" left who has any chance at all, no matter how slim.
CalMark| 10.19.11 @ 1:01PM
So...Cain is tied with Romney, but he's a no-hoper. Nobody else but maybe Newt has even an outside chance.
Reminder: a few months before the first primaries in '08, McCain was all but dead, in single digits.
Who knows how this will all turn out. What color is the sky in your world?
SassyFrass| 10.19.11 @ 1:35PM
Okay, fine. Bachmann was the rising star for a few weeks. Then Perry was the rising star for a few weeks. Now it's Cain, and we don't know yet if he'll have some staying power or fade like the others.
On the other hand ... the 9-9-9 thing looks worse and worse the longer you look at it, and Cain seems unable to answer even simple basic criticisms of it. One of his advisors says the sales tax part of 9-9-9 is going to be replaced with a payroll tax, which I suppose addresses some of the main criticisms but at the same time it makes him look like he didn't put much thought into it. And it's still going to raise taxes on the lower 80% or so of wage earners and cut taxes for people earning over 200k, and no matter how good it sounds to get the 49% who don't pay taxes to start paying taxes it's not something you want to base your campaign for President on.
So yeah, I think his day in the sun is ending, but I could be wrong.
Occam's Tool| 10.19.11 @ 12:58PM
I like raising Cain.

Hey Larry: Santorum got Mitt pretty good on his flip-flopping and Obamneycare. He does serve a useful purpose. You may not like it that he's going after your guy, but that's too bad.
SassyFrass| 10.19.11 @ 1:42PM
I agree, Santorum and Ron Paul both serve a useful purpose even though they have no chance of winning. They push issues that the frontrunners would rather dodge.

In 1960 Barry Goldwater took the podium at the RNC when his named was placed before the convention. He refused and spoke to the Conservative movement. "Lets grow up Conservatives." "If we want to take this party back, and I believe we can someday, Lets get to work." Have we learned nothing?
Mimi| 10.19.11 @ 1:15PM
Enough about Mitt he and Perry did themselves in ...having their school-boy fight...showed them both snarly, immature and nowhere near PRESIDENTIAL! The only possibilities left are...Herman, Newt. Michele,Santorum and Huntsman.
Jon Huntsman because he had the good sense to have loyalty to New Hampshire and its FIRST in the nation status!
One of the main reasons that Obama is done is because he blatently serves his political needs over any in the country. It is the one thing we NOW will pick up the "STINK" of in any candidate.
Mitt did just that and both he and Perry made darn fools of themselves....just to make a point!
Herman has the potential because he is so well liked...and by all...He has great talents and appears to have the judgement and temperament to SERVE the country which he WILL do....SERVEbecause he has Maturity and above all endearing ...GREAT Humility!
Newt the MOST experienced and also SERVE....like he always has. Michele is the best at being a CONSERVATIVE spoksman she explains the concept and value in it betterthan any POL! Rick Santorum needs a break and an advisor....he shows by his depth and knowledge he could serve as President better than any Obama right NOW!!!
Folks....watch the POLLS the American People are capable and will choose well especially this time....Perry and Mitt will fade as did Hillary and Rudy in 2008!
Just my take!!!

Liberal Mitt cannot abide the slightest questioning of his role as presumptive nominee. Perry and Santorum rattled his royal RINONESS showing his true nature. Much like BHO, Mitt has a "world class temperament ".
Dai Alanye | 10.19.11 @ 2:07PM
In my opinion the supernumerary around here is Larry Thornberry himself. Like most of his columns, this one is nothing but snarkiness and superficial observations that rarely rise to the level of conventional wisdom.

Rick Santorum is a jerk. How anyone can support a guy who lost his last election by 20 points is beyond me. This seems to be running for Bishop rather than President. Either way, I don't want to see that sanctimonious jerk on the stage anymore. Let him stand in the corner and hold his breath.
SpiralArchitect| 10.19.11 @ 7:57PM
Yes, he should go stand in the corner because you are forced to watch the debate.
Mighty regal of you...

Sorry Johnny , don't be bitter just reconsider .Your dear Mittens has finally snapped and lets hope he continues to crash and finally burn.
The RNC beltway elite have tried their hardest to force fed us this rich snob who created Obamacare , peddles the Global warming scam, hires illegals , and is so far out of touch he decided to expand his LaJolla beachside mansion while running for President during the longest recession
since the 1930 's.
The RNC has hired set up two debates in the heart of Mittensland ( NH and Mormon controlled Las Vegas) and let all the Obama State Media elites run these awful debates.
Still, the GOP base hates this slick phony !

i gotta laugh at what passes for journalism here. in fact, as a tea partyer, i'm doing the exact opposite of what this guy is suggesting. i'm pumping more money to keep bachmann, santorum, and cain going simultaneously. romney's strategy is clearly to outlast our guys and then claim the nomination with a low level of support.
that's why i'm keeping our team in play for as long as i can. the longer we keep romney from clinching the nomination. the more chance one of our conservatives will come through. the problem is that we need a deep bench to combat romney. one conservative is vulnerable. right now there is more safety in numbers. after we close out romney, then their will be plenty of time to pick our finalist.

slewing ring is a kind of comprehensive load to bear large bearings, because of its appearance resembling plate, so it is also called "slewing bearing". http://www.1stbearing.com
