Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul will unveil his
plan to balance the budget today in Las Vegas, including $1
trillion in spending cuts. Politico
reports on some of the details:
But Paul goes further: he'll propose immediately freezing
spending by numerous government agencies at 2006 levels, the last
time Republicans had complete control of the federal budget, and
drastically reducing spending elsewhere. The EPA would see a 30
percent cut, the Food and Drug Administration would see one of 40
percent and foreign aid would be zeroed out immediately. He'd also
take an ax to Pentagon funding for wars.
Medicaid, the children's health insurance program, food stamps,
family support programs and the children's nutrition program would
all be block-granted to the states and removed from the mandatory
spending column of the federal budget.
Younger workers would be allowed to opt out of Social Security,
the federal workforce would be cut by 10 percent, the Bush tax cuts
would be extended, and both Obamacare and Dodd-Frank would be
repealed. Paul would also reduce the presidential salary to
$39,336, "approximately equal to the median personal
income of the American worker."
Ron Paul doesn't have a chance of winning the nomination but he
can use his influence to push the debate. That will be a good thing
IF he can focus on the spending cuts with mainstream conservative
support and put the frontrunners on the spot about whether or not
they agree. If Paul starts talking about cuts related to
isolationism and other quirky ideas it will end up being another
"there goes Ron Paul" moment.
Jack in Wi.| 10.17.11 @ 4:21PM
Ron Paul is the only candidate running with a sane defense
policy. This country has gone bankrupt in the last 20 years being
the world's policeman. We will be as bankrupt as the old Soviet
Union, if we continue our present foreign policy. The world can
well defend itself. The Muslim countries are backward 3rd world
places. They are a threat to no one. It is far more likely that
this country will fall to internal rot rather then any foreign
government. Europe, Israel, the Arabs, japan, Korea, and the rest
of them are rich enough to spend their own blood and treasure for
their own defences.
He has just issued an new economic plan which would slash
government spending 1 trillion dollars and balance the budget in 3
years. He is the intellectual and moral giant leading this country
back to sanity. It is Ron Paul or ruin.
The idea that muslim countries are a threat to no one ... yeah,
that's a hard sell among conservatives after 9/11 in case you
hadn't noticed.
Which just goes to make my point. Whatever good might have come
out of Ron Paul putting a detailed economic plan out there will be
completely nullified if Paul can't resist making statements that
sound so out of touch.
I guess he's got little to lose at this point, with him polling
at 2.7% in the most recent Florida poll, behind everyone else
except Bachmann and Huntsman.

" Nonintervention or non-interventionism is a foreign policy
which holds that political rulers should avoid alliances with other
nations, but still retain diplomacy, and avoid all wars not related
to direct self-defense. This is based on the grounds that a state
should not interfere in the internal politics of another state,
based upon the principles of state sovereignty and
self-determination. A similar phrase is "strategic independence".
Historical examples of supporters of non-interventionism are US
Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who both favored
nonintervention in European Wars while maintaining free trade.
Other proponents include United States Senator Robert Taft and
United States Congressman Ron Paul.
Nonintervention is distinct from isolationism, the latter
featuring economic nationalism (protectionism) and restrictive
immigration. Proponents of non-interventionism distinguish their
polices from isolationism through their advocacy of more open
national relations, to include diplomacy and free trade."

I love the bold cuts but in so many ways RonPaul is off the
reservation on the real world as it exists. His foreign policy
sounds simply nutty especially in a time where the oceans can no
longer protect us. I wish we could pick and choose policy rather
simply a presidential nominee because so many of our candidates
have great ideas but they are all flawed as well. So no to Paul,
definitely NOT Romney, that leaves me with Perry, Newt or Cain. Any
of whom are way way better than Obama; unfortunately, my primary
vote in Texas never even counts, sigh. I like Perry because he is
educable and when faced with overwhelming disapproval, he
reevaluates his position and will admit a mistake.
Dale Stewart| 10.17.11 @ 9:14PM
Please provide some detailed information to support your "off
the reservation" viewpoint. If my neighbor were to come onto my
property armed, and proceed to destroy most everything of value to
me, stealing what was left, I might just get a little angry.and I
might just take some aggressive action against him, and I would be
perfectly justified in doing so. Had said neighbor remained on his
own property, minding his own business, I likely would have never
given him much thought beyond the occasional hello in passing.
Better yet, we might eventually strike a rapport and end up being
friends. The world is not Americas enemy, the world does not hate
our freedoms and our prosperity. The world hates having bombs
dropped on their heads, troops on their soil, puppets in their
parliament. If America is hated around the world it's with damn
good reason. War is not a family value, it has however replaced
baseball as Americas national pastime.

" Ron Paul, US Representative (R-TX), in a Jan. 24, 2005 article
titled "Want to Reform Social Security? Stop Spending" on his US
Congressional website, stated:
"The administration speaks of private accounts, but
government-managed investment of Social Security funds is not
privatization at all. True capitalism by definition operates
without government interference, and we should oppose further
government involvement in the financial markets. After all, which
government officials will decide what stocks, bonds, mutual funds,
or other investment vehicles are approved? Which politicians will
you trust to decide what your portfolio may contain? Imagine the
lobbyists fighting over which special interests will have their
favored investments approved for Social Security accounts.
Political favoritism, rather than market performance, will
determine what investments are allowed, and Social Security in
essence will become a huge source of taxpayer-provided investment
capital."

That's quite a leap. America does not support Israel and never

America gives more foreign aid to Israels enemies in the middle
east than to Israel, so eliminating foreign aid in the middle east
would actually be a net benefit to the nation of Israel. Israel is
not free to defend its national interests or even determine it's
own borders without American "approval". Ron Paul supports the
right of Israel to exist and to determine it's own fate. Ron Paul
supports Israels right to defend itself and feels that Israel is
quite capable of doing so and would be better served by less so
called American "support". This does not sound anti-semitic to me.

AAAAAAANNNND.
"Tea party activists are divided roughly into two camps,
according to a POLITICO/TargetPoint poll: one that’s
libertarian-minded and largely indifferent to hot-button values
issues and another that’s culturally conservative and equally
concerned about social and fiscal issues.
The survey, an exit poll conducted by Edison Research at the
massive Tax Day protest on the National Mall, found that the
attendees were largely hostile to President Barack Obama and the
national Democratic Party — three-quarters believe the president
“is pursuing a socialist agenda.”
Yet they aren’t enamored of the Republican Party as an
alternative. Overall, three out of four tea party attendees said
they were “scared about the direction” of the country and “want to
send a message to both political parties.”
Palin, who topped the list with 15 percent, speaks for the 43
percent of those polled expressing the distinctly conservative view
that government does too much, while also saying that it needs to
promote traditional values.
Paul’s thinking is reflected by an almost identical 42 percent
who said government does too much but should not try to promote any
particular set of values — the hallmarks of libertarians. He came
in second to Palin with 12 percent.
When asked to choose from a list of candidates for president in
2012, Palin and Paul also finished one-two — with Palin at 15
percent and Paul at 14 percent. "

Ron Paul = 3% in Florida
And that's a current poll unlike your poll from last month and
the other one from a year and a half ago.
I don't think many of the Ron Paul supporters really understand
what he's for. With this recent budget he's proposing doing away
with the department of the interior, which manages public land,
like national park, national forests, BLM, etc... where you go
camping, hunting, fishing, etc. Most americans that enjoy the great
outdoors should be bothered by that. According to his ideology,
these should be privatized, which would probably transfer ownership
to the logging or fossil fuel industry, limiting our access.
His budget also gets rid of the department that permits and
regulates off-shore drilling. Unregulated drilling means more oil
spills, including off the atlantic coast and off the pacific
northwest coasts. What would happen to the NW salmon industry if we
had a couple of those spills?
Speaking of salmon, he also wants to get rid of the department
that manages fish and wildlife, which would basically mean
over-extraction of a lot of species to the point of extinction.
In a lot of ways I like Ron Paul. He's provocative. But I hope
to god america is smart enough not to elect him.
Dale Stewart| 10.17.11 @ 9:29PM
Tony, you are expressing a common misunderstanding of Dr. Ron
Paul's positions. Dr. Paul would like to see the federal government
out of any area where it has not been granted specific
constitutional authority. The Grand Canyon is mostly in the state
of Arizona, Arizona would regain control of it's rightful property
and the people of Arizona would have the responsibility to care and
maintain this "national" treasure. Have a little more faith in your
fellow citizens. Less federal government, federal regulation,
federal waste, federal fraud, federal intrusion is a good thing.
The failed and more often than not destructive policies of the
federal government are too numerous to mention and the damage that
has been done due to their over reaching authority is beyond
calculation. The EPA, FDA, et al, have essentially become the
legislative arms of mega corporations and industries whose primary
concern is for anything but the health and safety of American
citizens and least of all the environment.

conservatism even is anymore.

The Saudi's and the whole Arab League offered in 2002 the Israeli's a full peace and trade relations if they would get behind a negotiated green line border and stay there. After 63 years it is long past time for peace in this region. The Arabs were ready 35 years ago, when Sadat addressed the Knesset.

" Nonintervention or non-interventionism is a foreign policy which holds that political rulers should avoid alliances with other nations, but still retain diplomacy, and avoid all wars not related to direct self-defense. This is based on the grounds that a state should not interfere in the internal politics of another state, based upon the principles of state sovereignty and self-determination. A similar phrase is "strategic independence". Historical examples of supporters of non-interventionism are US Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who both favored nonintervention in European Wars while maintaining free trade. Other proponents include United States Senator Robert Taft and United States Congressman Ron Paul.
Nonintervention is distinct from isolationism, the latter featuring economic nationalism (protectionism) and restrictive immigration. Proponents of non-interventionism distinguish their polices from isolationism through their advocacy of more open national relations, to include diplomacy and free trade."

I love the bold cuts but in so many ways RonPaul is off the reservation on the real world as it exists. His foreign policy sounds simply nutty especially in a time where the oceans can no longer protect us. I wish we could pick and choose policy rather simply a presidential nominee because so many of our candidates have great ideas but they are all flawed as well. So no to Paul, definitely NOT Romney, that leaves me with Perry, Newt or Cain. Any of whom are way way better than Obama; unfortunately, my primary vote in Texas never even counts, sigh. I like Perry because he is educable and when faced with overwhelming disapproval, he reevaluates his position and will admit a mistake.
Dale Stewart| 10.17.11 @ 9:14PM
Please provide some detailed information to support your "off the reservation" viewpoint. If my neighbor were to come onto my property armed, and proceed to destroy most everything of value to me, stealing what was left, I might just get a little angry.and I might just take some aggressive action against him, and I would be perfectly justified in doing so. Had said neighbor remained on his own property, minding his own business, I likely would have never given him much thought beyond the occasional hello in passing. Better yet, we might eventually strike a rapport and end up being friends. The world is not Americas enemy, the world does not hate our freedoms and our prosperity. The world hates having bombs dropped on their heads, troops on their soil, puppets in their parliament. If America is hated around the world it's with damn good reason. War is not a family value, it has however replaced baseball as Americas national pastime.

" Ron Paul, US Representative (R-TX), in a Jan. 24, 2005 article titled "Want to Reform Social Security? Stop Spending" on his US Congressional website, stated:
"The administration speaks of private accounts, but government-managed investment of Social Security funds is not privatization at all. True capitalism by definition operates without government interference, and we should oppose further government involvement in the financial markets. After all, which government officials will decide what stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or other investment vehicles are approved? Which politicians will you trust to decide what your portfolio may contain? Imagine the lobbyists fighting over which special interests will have their favored investments approved for Social Security accounts. Political favoritism, rather than market performance, will determine what investments are allowed, and Social Security in essence will become a huge source of taxpayer-provided investment capital."

That's quite a leap. America does not support Israel and never has. America undermines Israeli sovereignty at nearly every turn. America gives more foreign aid to Israels enemies in the middle east than to Israel, so eliminating foreign aid in the middle east would actually be a net benefit to the nation of Israel. Israel is not free to defend its national interests or even determine it's own borders without American "approval". Ron Paul supports the right of Israel to exist and to determine it's own fate. Ron Paul supports Israels right to defend itself and feels that Israel is quite capable of doing so and would be better served by less so called American "support". This does not sound anti-semitic to me. Would you please check your facts and then provide some evidence to support your ridiculous assertion?

"Ron Paul Takes Third in Latest Reuters/Ipsos Poll
Saturday, October 15, 2011:
Rep. Ron Paul continues his string of strong poll finishes with a third place finish in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely Republican voters. The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted between October 6 and 10 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percentage points. Ipsos Public Affairs surveyed 410 Republicans."
AAAAAAANNNND.
"Tea party activists are divided roughly into two camps, according to a POLITICO/TargetPoint poll: one that’s libertarian-minded and largely indifferent to hot-button values issues and another that’s culturally conservative and equally concerned about social and fiscal issues.
The survey, an exit poll conducted by Edison Research at the massive Tax Day protest on the National Mall, found that the attendees were largely hostile to President Barack Obama and the national Democratic Party — three-quarters believe the president “is pursuing a socialist agenda.”
Yet they aren’t enamored of the Republican Party as an alternative. Overall, three out of four tea party attendees said they were “scared about the direction” of the country and “want to send a message to both political parties.”
Palin, who topped the list with 15 percent, speaks for the 43 percent of those polled expressing the distinctly conservative view that government does too much, while also saying that it needs to promote traditional values.
Paul’s thinking is reflected by an almost identical 42 percent who said government does too much but should not try to promote any particular set of values — the hallmarks of libertarians. He came in second to Palin with 12 percent.
When asked to choose from a list of candidates for president in 2012, Palin and Paul also finished one-two — with Palin at 15 percent and Paul at 14 percent. "

I don't think many of the Ron Paul supporters really understand what he's for. With this recent budget he's proposing doing away with the department of the interior, which manages public land, like national park, national forests, BLM, etc... where you go camping, hunting, fishing, etc. Most americans that enjoy the great outdoors should be bothered by that. According to his ideology, these should be privatized, which would probably transfer ownership to the logging or fossil fuel industry, limiting our access.
His budget also gets rid of the department that permits and regulates off-shore drilling. Unregulated drilling means more oil spills, including off the atlantic coast and off the pacific northwest coasts. What would happen to the NW salmon industry if we had a couple of those spills?
Speaking of salmon, he also wants to get rid of the department that manages fish and wildlife, which would basically mean over-extraction of a lot of species to the point of extinction.
In a lot of ways I like Ron Paul. He's provocative. But I hope to god america is smart enough not to elect him.
Dale Stewart| 10.17.11 @ 9:29PM
Tony, you are expressing a common misunderstanding of Dr. Ron Paul's positions. Dr. Paul would like to see the federal government out of any area where it has not been granted specific constitutional authority. The Grand Canyon is mostly in the state of Arizona, Arizona would regain control of it's rightful property and the people of Arizona would have the responsibility to care and maintain this "national" treasure. Have a little more faith in your fellow citizens. Less federal government, federal regulation, federal waste, federal fraud, federal intrusion is a good thing. The failed and more often than not destructive policies of the federal government are too numerous to mention and the damage that has been done due to their over reaching authority is beyond calculation. The EPA, FDA, et al, have essentially become the legislative arms of mega corporations and industries whose primary concern is for anything but the health and safety of American citizens and least of all the environment.

Paul proposes real cuts to the Leviathan and what do we see here? Neo cons defending their precious State like the progressives they really are. Some even raise the flag of environmentalism in their defense of the status quo. Huh? A minute ago they were saying "Drill, baby drill" but now its "We can't do away with the Federal drilling permit power cause it'll mean oil spills". Seems that Cain isn't the only neo con that doesn't understand what neoconservatism is. But then the useful idiots have always had their uses.
Another good thing Paul does is flush the neos from their blinds so their shallowness and contradictions can be exposed, though they never see it the rest of us do. Nice little conformists doing just what they're supposed to.
They are like Trotsky, their ideological forefather, they don't oppose the all powerful State. They just don't like the way a Stalin runs it.
Is it beginning to make sense why even when "we" win, the State gets bigger? Before these 5th columnists infiltrated to confuse, subvert, and ultimately dominate, conservatism was opposition to the growth of the Nanny State. Now who the hell knows what conservatism even is anymore.
Let's see: endless war-check, crony capitalism-check, expanding spending and debt-check, growing Fedzilla-check, adding national sales tax to income tax-check, defending bankster domination of rotten economic system-check, pretending Federal Reserve destruction of the dollar is no big deal-check, and rabid attacks on anyone or anything that threatens any of the above-double check!
