The Spectacle Blog

According to a senior U.S. official (via the CNN news blog) the FBI and DEA collaborated to disrupt an Iranian plot to commit an act of terror within the sovereign boundaries of the United States. According to this official, the alleged plan was orchestrated by the Iranian government and involved a plot to kill Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi ambassador to the United States.

According to the complaint filed before a federal court in NY, the plot involved bombing a restaurant that was regularly frequented by the Saudi ambassador.

Obviously, the ramifications of this alleged conspiracy will have enormous implications. This would represent the first attempt by a sovereign nation to perpetrate an act of terror on US soil. The friction between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Iran’s Shi’a theocracy will be dramatically exacerbated.

This is a  developing story… the White House response will undoubtedly prove delicate.

UPDATE: It is now being reported that the plot included bomb attacks on the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Washington, DC. Manssor Arbabsiar allegedly told a DEA informant that his marching order were being “directed by high-ranking members of the Iranian government,” and that he had sought assistance from a notorious Mexican drug cartel to carry out the attack. Although reminiscent of a Tom Clancy novel, this is the world we live in — where transnational threats to American security blend sovereign enemies with narco-terror, and murderous cowards will savage American civilians to murder foreign dignitaries.

I think it would be safe to substitute the word "inadequate," for "delicate."

LiveFreeOrDie| 10.11.11 @ 4:23PM

Anyone else find it interesting that every report names Iran? From this administration?

Early indicators point to Obama wanting a conveniently (election) timed war or at the very least a "crisis."

If nothing else, it will be an interesting show.

See Holder's announcement:

I'd sure like to here his answer as to how exactly Iran will be "held accountable."

Trinacria| 10.11.11 @ 4:35PM

I suspect this will come in the form of a very stern talking-to...

LiveFreeOrDie| 10.11.11 @ 4:43PM

It was also interesting the AG is the one discussing foreign policy. Where's Hillary or the big O??

ncatty| 10.11.11 @ 5:09PM

I am sure Saudi Arabia will be ever so grateful to the US.

Occam's Tool| 10.11.11 @ 5:26PM

As I have said before, a nuclear pounding of Iran will solve many, many things. As usual, although BRUTAL, I am nonetheless correct.

Dead scum don't bomb people. The Iranian government is scum.

C Bowen | 10.11.11 @ 6:39PM

You were scared of Iraq, right?

Solo| 10.11.11 @ 5:29PM

None of this makes any sense.

Why would the Iranians send agents all the way to America to attack Saudi Arabia and Israel interests when both of those nations are right in their own back yard?

According to reports, the one and only guy they caught is a naturalized American citizen
The "lone nut" theory makes more sense to me.

I'd wager that the Obama Administration is trumping this up to make it appear as an "international plot" by the Iranians.
I'd further wager that this guy's "confession" is the only evidence that Barry's Bumpkins have to tie Iran to this non-incident.

The republicans in Congress would be wise to tread lightly on this issue. Let Barry take the lead and watch what develops.

The only government caught working with Mexican cartels is the US government. This is what I think will come out. Our government found two stooges and hooked them up with their Mexican cartel contacts. They then give these guys some money and the government then busts them.

PCC| 10.11.11 @ 8:02PM

How did this guy just happen to connect with a DEA agent posing as a member of a Mexican drug cartel? It's at least equally likely that the suspect is a halfwit fantasist who was goaded into this by our own Homeland Security zealots.

Solo| 10.11.11 @ 5:32PM

OH..and by the way..

More people have died (both American citizens and foreign nationals) as a result of Eric Holder's "Fast & Furious" program than as a result of this "Plot".

He should be addressing THAT instead of a 4 month old investigation of a plot which was never going anywhere!

Red Phillips | 10.11.11 @ 5:40PM

Given that so many people are anxious for any excuse to bomb Iran, this report has to be viewed with extreme skepticism.

Paul McGrath| 10.11.11 @ 5:50PM

Solo has a point. Something is really weird here. How would it benefit Iran to attack both the Saudi ambassador and the Israeli embassy on American soil? Yes, of course, they hate all three, but in what way would an attack like this further their interests? Right now, their number one interest is in building nuclear bombs. Angering Americans, and perhaps provoking a response, would not seem to further that interest.

On the other hand, perhaps this is simply a symptom of the political infighting there; one side might be trying to damage the credibility of the other.

This is not as simple as it might seem.

WJ| 10.11.11 @ 6:01PM

This story is fake bs put out by a government trying to distract the American public from other issues and also trying to generate war fever for another military conflict with no benefit to the USA (as with Iraq).

The American people are suckers and will probably buy this load of dog squeeze.

Congratulations to your one stop shopping center for all your jehadist needs.
Yes the FBI scores again when a would be Iranian jehadist walked into the DEA arms looking for a way to attack their hated rivals, the Saudis.

Naturally, The FBI took over the case, as they are the expert professionals in supplying everything a budding jehadist needs to almost complete his plot.
The funny thing is, the FBI were the only professionals in this plot as without them it was amateur hour all the way.
So Congratulations to the FBI.

A good question is where are the Islamic professionals?
The various spy and security agencies from the Nazis to the USSR to the Western Countries have been training the Muslim countries for decades.
So why do we keep uncovering the bumbling amateurs?
Have the pros decided that Jehad is a waste of their time and resources or are they just better hidden?

C Bowen | 10.11.11 @ 6:37PM

Didn't the Cheney-Obamites just explain that this stuff is legal? I don't get it.

Chris Ward | 10.12.11 @ 7:35AM

I don’t believe IT. The timing is suspect because I don’t trust Republicans, especially when it comes to terrorist activities. These silver spoons use the terrorist threat like a tool to divert public attention away from how f***ed up they are. Either that or those arms dealing Saudis need an infusion of cash from more conflict. In any case big oil is playing the US government for fools again.

This Iranian assassination plot took the headlines away from the fact Republicans (and Conservative Democrats who are no better than Republicans) voted down the jobs bill in the Senate. How any American worker can vote for Republicans is beyond my understanding. The Republican Party and the Bush Crime Family sold out the American PEOPLE for a very few vain, greed stricken, power mad trust fund babies.

I like what Newt Gingrich said at the debate last night about how Americans should focus on the politicians and their policy decisions. I’d like to look back to the 90’s when Newt, Tom Delay, Phil Gramm, ect laid the groundwork for the economic collapse. Hidden expatriate clauses, legislation that made it easy for corporations to move our jobs to Asia. A curse upon all who are still stupid enough to fall for the Republican Party pitiful bs… See jinnbad.blogspot.com for the message.

All the news and information in THIS case come directly from the Obama administration's justice department.

"This Iranian assassination plot took the headlines away from the fact Republicans (and Conservative Democrats who are no better than Republicans) voted down the jobs bill in the Senate. "

So Obama fabricated the story to draw attention away from the senate not passing his own bill? Your thought process doesn't make any sense at all. By the way, if spending trillions on a stimulus didn't work why what in the world makes you think this bill will do ANYTHING?

"How any American worker can vote for Republicans is beyond my understanding. "

Agreed.

slewing ring is a kind of comprehensive load to bear large bearings, because of its appearance resembling plate, so it is also called "slewing bearing". http://www.1stbearing.com
