Herman Cain decisively won the Florida Republican straw poll today by better than a two to one margin over Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Of course one can make the case that Cain's straw poll triumph is no more significant than Michele Bachmann's Iowa straw poll triumph last month. One can also make the argument that neither Bachmann nor Mitt Romney utilized their resources for their straw poll and if they had the outcome might very well be different.

Yet I wonder how many of those who cast their vote for Cain today decided to do so within the past 48 hours. I suspect that many Florida Republicans were swayed by Cain's strong performance during Thursday night's debate in Orlando.

Perry put a lot of eggs in this basket and now once again finds himself with egg on his face. There's no question that Republicans have doubts about Perry. But I also sense that Republicans are not ready to embrace Romney and are still looking for a viable alternative to him. Paul Ryan and Mitch Daniels aren't running and it isn't clear if Sarah Palin and Chris Christie are going to run. Newt Gingrich's best days are behind him, Michele Bachmann is too erratic, Rick Santorum is too abrasive, Jon Huntsman isn't embracing conservatism, Gary Johnson needs to write his own jokes while Ron Paul is a joke.

That leaves Herman Cain.

Romney has been hitting Perry with the "career politician" mallet. He can't do that with Cain. It is going to be a lot tougher for Romney to go after Cain. I am not saying he won't do it but when Cain criticized Romney's tax plan it was interesting to see Romney refrain from criticizing Cain directly. If Romney were going to criticize Cain it might be for a lack of experience. Well, Cain certainly doesn't lack experience in the private sector. Yes, he lacks experience as an elected official but in this day and age that's a virtue.

Now given those circumstances, there are some issues with which Cain isn't familiar namely foreign policy. For instance, Cain couldn't answer a question during the debate about the merits of a Palestinian state. Yet Cain strikes me as a quick study. He also possesses a boatload of common sense. Cain has the kind fo common sense which would resist the temptation to stand before the UN General Assembly and proclaim there would be a Palestinian state in a year's time. I am far more comfortable trusting the gut instincts of Herman Cain than I am with what Barack Obama learned in the hallowed halls of Columbia and Harvard not to mention in the pews of Trinity United Church in Chicago.

Above all else, Cain has a warmth and a sense of humor that could help this country through our troubled times.

Cain may get a bump. But Perry gets a headache just when he doesn't need one. The storyline now becomes "no real frontrunner." Which invites new competition into the race.

Next several weeks could be a lot of fun.

Jack in Wi.| 9.25.11 @ 7:19AM

Cain [ Mr. Federal Reserve and Mr. TARP ] is the last guy I want for President. The countryclub which was supposed to pack the poll for Perry has abanoned him. This is the clear sign of this poll. I believe that Aaron Goldsteein has it wrong about old Herm's vote total. I believe the total votes in the whole poll were cast were 2600, not the figure he quotes for Herman.

Now we all know why Aaron hates Ron Paul. He wants an American First foreign policy. The trouble is that The leading Neocon backed candidates are complete flops. Ron Paul has a huge, articulate following, money, and the issues that most voters want. They want the troops home now, an end to all foreign aid, an audit of the FED, and a masssive reduction of the Federal Budget. Ron Paul is by far the most intelligent, and experienced debater. He gets the most applause at most debates. That is why they try to ignore him and not ask him any quetions. He also wins almost all on-line and off line polls. For instance Ron had a huge vote at the California straw poll last week. Of course that was mostly ignored.

The elites of the Party are desperate to find anyone to stop Paul and his group. So far they haven't found him. All they have done is anger us Paul supporters, who are the only new blood that the party has attracted in a long time. Of course I am an old party member, but feel like the old timer at every Ron Paul event. The diehards can come over and join us or the the Party will be split and disappear. It is Ron Paul or ruin.

Wayne| 9.25.11 @ 8:28AM

There is much I like about Ron Paul, but he is a stodgy old white man and we have seen how that do against Obama.

Dr.Ron Paul,

He still hasn't won jack, Jack. And I notice neither you nor Clint will take me up on my bet, because you both are gutless vermin.

The Bet: If Paul wins ANYTHING, any staw poll, any caucus, etc., I stop blogging until after the Presidential election. If he doesn't win anything and exits stage LEFT (For Islamist Jihadist slut), you do.

I've offered and offered this and you two Jihadists are too cowardly to pick it up. Lots of hot air, no guts.

Apparently Ron Paul won the CA straw poll---of course, CA is not a state-in-play at this time, and there were about a thousand people there from this most populous of States.

In any race where there is a contest and importance, he loses.

Al Adab| 9.25.11 @ 9:13PM

Those racist Tea Party people just don't get it do they Occam. Darn, what would the Left do with this candidate? Oh, I know. They would just say the GOP found an "Uncle Tom" to put up against the Real black President. Does anyone still believe this stuff? The only racists I see are the ones who make the accusation and view everything through the prism of race, ie The Left.

Occam's Tool| 9.26.11 @ 12:32AM

Yup. Most racist Tea Partiers I know wish Allen West had entered the race.

I'm so looking forward to the great Ron Paul exiting the race so that Jack and Clint will be rendered mute.

The point I'm trying to make to those two clowns is that Ron Paul stands the same chance of winning the nomination as I do of being elected Pope.

Associated Press-GfK poll: Ron Paul the most favorable GOP candidate

A new national poll of the general population has revealed that top tier candidate Ron Paul is the most favorable choice in the Republican Presidential nomination race.

Ron Paul 37% favorable vs 36% unfavorable = +1
Mitt Romney 39% favorable vs 41% unfavorable = -2
Rick Perry 33% favorable vs 36% unfavorable = -3
Michele Bachmann 35% favorable vs 43% unfavorable = -8

I know it's just a goofy hobby site, but Intrade has now driven Perry down to a 22.5% chance for the GOP nomination. Earlier this month before the debates he was close to 40%.

Reaganaut| 9.24.11 @ 11:17PM

Cain? He's not Able to mount a credible campaign. This was a complete rupudiation of Perry who has shown so far that he's not ready for prime time. Could be we're on a countdown to Mitt's nomination.

Victoria21| 9.24.11 @ 11:54PM

I disagree. Cain could pick up momentum. He brings a message of hope for the future......a message that Perry had once and somehow lost sight of because of playing defense too much. The crowd loved Cain and shouted NO MORE RINOS. In reality, Romney was competing too......reportedly sending e-mails and letters even though he was not there physically. This was a vote against Perry and ROMNEY who has been campaigning for 5 years.

Wayne| 9.25.11 @ 8:32AM

Romney is the default candidate. If conservatives can not find the candidate they can rally around, then Romney gets the nomination by default.

Foxfier| 9.24.11 @ 11:58PM

Cain is likable.

What are they going to do, call him "The Pizza Guy"? That's what his supporters already do-- no sting. Maybe "Godfather" jokes?

I would love to have a CIC who knows how to cut staffing, shut down outlets that aren't performing, the other tough choices. The fact that he isn't a politician is really appealing, too.

Wall Street Journal : Washington Wire:

"Ron Paul Sticks With His Principles, Climbs in Polls

In a political season marked by warfare between Democrats and Republicans, the White House and Congress, haves and have-nots, GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul has built staunch support among voters who are furious at the federal government — from emo-kids to retirees.
Unlike most candidates this season, Mr. Paul isn’t targeting the media, which routinely ignore him despite his third-place ranking in the polls: “I don’t take it personally…I think a lot of people don’t understand what I’m talking about…that’s what I work on the most, trying to refine my message.”

Dr. Ron Paul,
“Israel is our close friend. While President Obama’s demand that Israel
make hard concessions in her border conflicts may very well be in her
long-term interest, only Israel can make that determination on her own,
without pressure from the United States or coercion by the UnitedNations.
“Unlike this President, I do not believe it is our place to dictate how
Israel runs her affairs. There can only be peace in the region if those
sides work out their differences among one another. We should respect
Israel’s sovereignty and not try to dictate her policy from Washington."

Occam's Tool| 9.26.11 @ 2:25PM

Uh, huh.

Then why do you oppose Israel's right to protect herself, like Paul does?

Sean| 9.25.11 @ 2:12AM

I would rather stick with someone that has a proven record in office. That is Ron Paul. He doesn't fold to pressure. He didn't support TARP, debt ceiling raises or any of that nonsense. Cain maybe good, but we really don't know what he would do when elected. There is often a disconnect between campaign talk and action while in office. That is why Romney and Perry are unacceptable.

Pecos Pete| 9.25.11 @ 7:05AM

Cain is real. The USA is in trouble and we need a president who can start fixing our broken federal government.

I don't care that Cain may not yet have opinions, thoughts and knowledge about foreign affairs. He can appoint as Secretary of State a competent person. He can study and learn ... the man is highly intelligent.

I don't care that Cain has never been elected to public office. Big deal. Look at the mess that has been caused by all of the "electable" politicians. The definition of insanity is to keep repeating the same mistake(s) over and over again.

Just the thought of a debate between King O and Herman Cain is inspiring. Not so when I think about Romney vs King O, or any of the other Republican candidates.

When The Hill contacted Paul's campaign about his remarks, a spokesman said the candidate was joking and that Kucinich is too ideologically different from Paul to be a candidate for a Cabinet spot.

Jefferson got Congressional approval. Ron Paul voted to go into Afghanistan. So whats your argument?

Occam's Tool| 9.26.11 @ 12:35AM

Paul believes that Iran should get the bomb. Jefferson kicked Islamist's ass. That's my argument, Sean.

Our battle against Islam has gone on for over 200 years. We smashed the Barbary Pirates, kicked Moro ass in the Phillipines, dealt with the Arabs in Tunisia in WWII, and have had to fight them again this decade. Paul, like you, is ignorant of this history, Sean.

Sean| 9.26.11 @ 1:05AM

So you want to attack every Muslim country? Jefferson didn't do that and neither did Ronald Reagan. Paul voted to go after those that attacked us. Paul know that we could wipe out Iran in 10 minutes if we had to. They are no threat to us and will not start a war with us.

Occam's Tool| 9.26.11 @ 2:34PM

Wait, Sean, until you see what will be necessary to do. It will be the next major multi-nation confrontation, and the death toll will make WWII seem SMALL.

The only question I have is whether we will win or lose, not whether or not it will happen. Just do me one favor, Sean. Just one.

Go to the CIA factbook and check out average ages and birthrates for the following: Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Britain, France, Greece, Spain, Russia.

Compare it to Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, Syria, Jordan.

Especially, compare the number of males in the 1-14 age range in both countries (go 50-50 to get an approximate male/female difference) and project that forward 20 years.

By the way, only a few nukes are needed to cripple us with EMPs. If the leaders of Iran were willing to die for this, what could the rest of the West do in 2030, especially given that the majority of young military age men by that time will be named Mo?

Reagan had the Soviets to worry about. Jefferson was too weak at the time. Paul doesn't grasp the demographic problem because it requires action beyond his lifetime and he is fundamentally not interested in events beyond the shores of the US. But Presidents NEED to be.

This result is exactly why voters should not get too distracted by media and Establishment Republicans and pundit manipulations. For example, do not accept who is or who is not electable at this time. My guess is not only did Cain do very well but voters may also be fed up with the phoney boloney of Romney and Perry who BOTH have major flaws. And, I think Romney is well over due for an onslaught of questions don't you think ? But not only him.

Bob| 9.25.11 @ 8:05AM

Governor Crisco (Trenton Two Ton) will soon be it along with the Eskimo’s wife. This is absolutely hilarious the best political theaters ever, you Republicans are a gas.

Wayne| 9.25.11 @ 8:39AM

Lets look at the Democratic candidates since "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton. They gave us Al "the snake oil salesman" Gore. John "I am so a hero" Kerry and Barrack "I am the One who we have been waiting for" Obama. Any one of the Republican candidates would be far superior to what you have offered us. Time to destroy the NERO PARTY in 2012 and start rebuilding this country.

ds80| 9.25.11 @ 12:19PM

Conservatives could not care less what you think, Bob. Or, are you planning to register and vote R? I thought not. Your comments about the R primary candidates and are as pertinent as Obama's community organizer background was to his candidacy.

aware| 9.25.11 @ 1:25PM

And besides, he left out Trump in his list. It does have the rather embarrassing spectacle aspect of a crowd running from one to another trying to put the costume of "conservatism" on them only to have it fall off for not fitting.

Even more embarrassing to fall back into the final redoubt of the "Look for something positive in disaster" practitioners: "Ok, but our crappy choices are not as bad as your crappy choices".

The reason we have crappy choices of varying degrees is because there is essentially no real difference in how either party views government(the State). Their differences are only over what the State does, not its legitimacy in doing it.

I like Cain. From what I've seen he is as good or better choice than any of the other candidates. I like the fact that he is not a lawyer. I like that he is a trained mathematician, a successful business executive and his work in the Federal Reserve gives him an experience in the belly of the beast that few if any politicians have had. It could be that I have not followed him closely to know this but I would like to know more where he stands on foreign policy matters and AGW claims. Stefan Stackhouse| 9.25.11 @ 7:33PM

Well, one thing that could sure be said in Cain's favor is that one could hardly be accused of being a racist for supporting him over Obama.

Cain is abiding pretty faithfully with the "11th comandment", and is taking the high road by talking principles rather than taking pot shots. People do notice that, and it does matter.

Since the media morons are idiots who actually know and understand nothing, they get their research departments to dig up these obscure "gotcha" questions. Pay no attention to them. I suspect that most voters realize that any president has an extensive staff of expert advisors working for them who will compile an extensive briefing book prior to each meeting. What really matters is electing a president who is able to pick a team of good advisors, has the experience to effectively manage and control them, and the wisdom to weigh their advice and make their own, good decisions. I feel pretty confident that Cain would do pretty well on that score - certainly better than Obama, even with four years experience under his belt. I also feel that among the other candidates, only Romney and maybe Gingrich would stack up favorably on that score. Perry might on paper, but the more he opens his mouth the less and less convinced I become.

I'm not sold on Cain yet, but I do feel that he has been under-rated. The media have been much to quick to anoint Perry and Romney as the final two. It really isn't down to just them yet, and I'm glad that the Floridians made that point clear.

AVCurmudgeon| 9.25.11 @ 9:21PM

We have to remember that we are still in "pre-season" mode. It's a good thing that there are several potential candidates putting themselves forward; we are getting a good airing of views and differences. Nobody has yet taken the wheel, but we have time.

The simple reality is that there is no dominant leader in the GOP today. Who can conservatives rally behind without holding their nose too visibly? I've liked Bachmann, but her recent weirdness on the vaccine business is off-putting. Sarah seems less and less serious as a candidate by the day. Romney is in the center-right. Perry may be better than that, but shows a lot of inconsistency. Gingrich is a bright guy but somehow ephemeral. Ron Paul is strong on Constitutional and economic issues and a disaster on foreign policy. I can't take Huntsman seriously at all.

Herman Cain has many virtues and serious weaknesses. His simple beauty as a human being was made manifest by the ovation he received when Wallace mentioned his history with cancer. He has not much foreign policy experience but he did distinguish himself by going to Israel recently. His instincts are good; when he could not answer Wallace's question about the "right of return" he at least had enough on the ball to be able to say "it's an Israeli issue."

I've liked Cain from the beginning, and now that he is reemerging from the shadows I'm liking him even more. He is only "unelectable" if we do not decide to elect him.

Occam's Tool| 9.25.11 @ 10:03PM

His views on Israel are good. "Right of return" is a no brainer, and Herman has learned the answer is "no."

Sean| 9.25.11 @ 11:51PM

Occam's Tool| 9.26.11 @ 12:36AM

Sean| 9.26.11 @ 1:31AM

Cain is proud of his support for TARP he is for government interference in the market place read his columns. Second he is clueless on the economy as he thought there was no housing bubble or threat of recession. Third he worked for the FED and is against an audit of the FED. His 9-9-9 program calls for both a national sales tax and income tax at the same time. Every conservative knows you can not have both. If you want a national sales tax you better repeal the income tax and amend the Constitution. Also he was naive saying that future politicians would not raise both income and sales taxes in the future.

Dr.Ron Paul's Foreign Policy Advisor Michael Scheuer, Former CIA Chief of The bin Laden Unit,

" On Iran, The President should:

3.) Call in Israel's ambassador to the United States and tell him that we understand that Israel believes Iran is a threat to its survival, and that we agree that Israel has every right to defend itself. If Israel believes it must go to war with Iran, then so be it. But also tell the ambassador that if Israel attacks Iran, the U.S. administration will declare U.S. neutrality in the war and immediately cut off military and financial support to all combatants in the war.

4.) Speak to the American people and tell them to expect to be brutally propagandized by U.S. citizen Israel-Firsters through AIPAC, their ubiquitous media shills, and the men and women they own in the U.S. Congress and federal bureaucracy. Urge Americans to ignore this effort by U.S. Israel-Firsters to get them to send their soldier-children to fight in a religious war in which the U.S. has no genuine national interest at stake, and in which U.S. participation would further bankrupt the country, require the reintroduction of conscription, and put America at war with all of the Muslim world -- Shia and Sunni -- for the foreseeable future."
