Everybody, please read this important press release:

PRESS RELEASE

It has come to our attention that Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer is seeking an extension of the filing period so that he may file to take the upcoming FDNY Firefighter entry test...but is meeting resistance to his request.

Extension of the filing period for this test has, in the past, been a common practice. In fact, it was just extended this past weekend so recruiters could attend a parade and sign up those who didn't file an application during the allotted two months. Sgt. Meyer was in New York this week for events connected to his act of unbelievable bravery when he first became aware of the test and expressed an interest. Unfortunately, he expressed that interest a few hours- yes, hours- late.

We are calling on the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, the FDNY, Mayor Bloomberg and any and all other interested and proper agencies and officials to do whatever it takes to give the first living Marine since Vietnam to earn the Medal of Honor the opportunity to become one of New York's Bravest. There is absolutely no excuse not to- none. If the reasons for extending the filing period this past weekend or for past tests have been valid, then there is absolutely no excuse for not granting Sgt. Meyer's request.

I know there will be a groundswell of support for what we are urging in this Release. All interested members of the media, elected officials, civic and other leaders can contact us and we will coordinate with those closest to Sgt. Meyer. All receiving this message are urged to make phone calls, forward this message and take any other action to make this Marine's wish come true. A Medal of Honor recipient wants the opportunity to serve the city of New York- let's make sure he gets that opportunity.

i'm sure if he expressed his support for a ground zero mosque he would be in like flint.

:^). It's nice to see an old face again.

Minor Commentary: The phrase "In like Flynn," refers to Errol Flynn and his less than savory sexual activities (he was also a Nazi sympathiser and all around scumbag off screen---only a hero on screen).

However, James Coburn did a series of spy spoofs of James Bond called the Flint series.

If margie likes you, ggoblue, you must be a very nice guy. Either way, an MOH guy deserves special consideration for the NYFD.

It is inexcusable for NYC, target of the worst terrorist assault on US soil, to not allow one of the greatest fighters against terrorism a chance to serve.

FDNY should really be ashamed of itself. It routinely extends the filing period, yet it cannot extend it once again for a war hero? Pleeease. SGT Meyer is a hero and FDNY should do all it can to honor him in every way possible.

Keep6019Alive| 9.24.11 @ 7:11AM

Saying the FDNY "routinely extends the filing period" is a silly argument because when the FDNY extends the filing period, its done for all, not an individual. SGT. Meyer's actions exemplified extreme bravery but with all due respect to SGT. Meyer's he had over two months to file for the exam if he truly wanted to become a NYC fireman. There are people from all over this country, as a matter of fact, from all over the world who relished the chance to be a part of the greatest job in the world and they applied. If his wish was to truly become part of the FDNY why didn't he apply earlier?

One must also keep in mind that a Federal Judge has his hand in almost every aspect of FDNY hiring at the moment. If you reopen the filing period for one individual, the floodgates will open to even more controversy than is already surrounding this exam.

It should also be noted that Chief Mannix knew this would be a controversial issue and used it to subliminally attack the FDNY's attempt at attracting more minorities and not necessarily stand up for a War Veteran. If Chief Mannix really wants to stand up for Vet's he should fight for those Veterans who in 2008 received offers of employment from the FDNY and still have yet to be hired only to be required to go through the entire process all over again with ZERO guarantees they will even get the chance to. These Vet's lives have been turned upside down for 3 years awaiting appointment. They didn't just happen to be in NYC and decide oh "I'd like to file for the exam," they too served our country (some of them joining the military for the sole reason that it would better their chances of becoming a FDNY firefighter) and lost brothers on the battlefield. Yet nobody stands up for them because it wouldn't stir the pot enough to make news.

Read the Press Release more carefully- Sgt. Meyer only very recently became aware of the test which is why he did not file earlier.
As for standing up for other Veterans- Merit Matters has been very involved in doing so and will continue to provide help whenever asked, whether it makes news or not. I advise this poster to read through the posts on our website and/or contact the List #6019 advocacy group to learn more about our efforts.

Good, old bureaucracy at work. Sounds as if the deadheads from the Mayor on down in City government haven't gotten their coffee break. Dakota deserves far better from his countrymen. Shame on you New York.

Is the FDNY Leftist? Are they all a bunch of Lefties or something?
Just wondering.

Way, way, cool. Herman would kick O's tail in debate. And West would really hurt Biden.

Margie| 9.26.11 @ 9:09PM

Yeah, O.T. It's about time we have some authentic blacks running for the Presidency. It would be AWESOME to the max if West ran.

See what I mean about voting your way, Margie?
