Two from the Debate

At National Review, Kevin Williamson defends Rick Perry from Rick Santorum’s accusation that he is soft on illegal immigration because of a “bi-national” health care initiative in Texas.

At the Washington Examiner, Philip Klein examines Mitt Romney’s defense of his Massachusetts health care law, and finds out that it’s not too different from Obama’s excuses for Obamacare.

Kevin Williamson is from Lubbock, and he understands Texas' special relationship with people of Mexican descent. As Ken (another Texan on this site) pointed out, Mexicans have been a part of Texas since the Republic of Texas. Mexicans died inside the Alamo; they are the Tejanos, native Texans of Mexican descent. Some in the San Antonio/Austin area, most bilingual, are many-generations descendants of original Texans. People don't understand about this.

On an earlier post on one of these blog spots, I asked for a detailed article about this relationship, authored by a native Texan such as William Murchison. Mr. Lawler, I am now officially begging. A lot of the good conservatives on this site are starting to write him off on this, and I don't they all completely understand.

I am not a resident of Texas (though I may be one in just a few years), nor was I born there. I did once live there for five years, and both my children and all my grandchildren now live there.

I think the crucial matter is this: Whatever these and the other candidates have done or believe in my concern is: What do they have to offer to change the direction of the country and save us ?

Did you hear Mark Steyn today, Martin? He said Huntsman wants to drive us over the cliff in third gear, and Romney only wants to drive us over the cliff in second gear.

It seems no one has noticed that the two most conservative candidates most aligned with the Tea Party having the greatest name recognition, aside from Cain who has none and is struggling, essentially destroyed themselves and each other and left the door right open for GOP establishment Mitt Romney to walk right through and onto the white house. Pathetic. Perhaps, they all should focus a little more on what they have to offer in the way of real concrete ideas and solutions rather than soundbites and mud throwing. Romney must be enjoying every minute of this as well as the weakest candidates.
What a circus!

Cain and Gingrich are the only ones that have solid ideas and solutions willing to share them and have presented a more adult statesmen demeanor and style.

One of the saddest aspects of all this is the complete blindness and lack of self awareness that the GOP and many conservatives have, including here at TAS, of the reality that average Americans are watching this and getting their impressions of what conservativism and the GOP stands for....and when they see the same old bullshit, political games, and one-upmanship, the conservative message is lost.

Twenty seconds was alotted for each candidate to describe what they would do to fix the economy. Over half of them gave the usual horseshit, meaningless drivel..no substance, no answers, no idea. The others struggled with such lack of time they could not give a full answer. This is pathetic. If this is all we are capable of, given the crisis were in, nothing will change in this nation.

Not sure why some of them do not get together and have a real, true to the meaning of, debate.

Media coverage would be assured.

Add on: just do it low budget & post on youtube, go viral. There is a great new idea (going viral) from the ...90's?

Who is running these peoples "campaigns", seriously...

Perry can do something that it is doubtful the other candidates can. He can likely bring in a rather large group of conservative Hispanic voters. He does have a good relationship with Hispanics in TX. There are lots of legal Hispanic voters in TX, but of course quite a few illegals. Perry is not a good debater, but he is good one on one. He would be one on one with Obama. Think about it.
